Super Nationals opens with record SportMod numbers; Guss wins Deery Series race

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 6) – A record 168 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods are already in the pits at Boone Speedway this Labor Day, opening day of the 28th annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals at Boone Speedway.

That’s three more than last year. Paralleling its growth member and sanction-wise, the division has seen higher entry numbers every year since its debut at Boone in 2005.

More than 300 cars will see action today: 131 Hobby Stocks had gone through tech by 1:30 p.m. while 32 Late Model drivers had already drawn for starting spots in Deery Brothers Summer Series heat races.

Kevin Blum of Colona, Ill., had one of the biggest smiles in the registration tent today, after drawing the pole for the first Late Model heat.

Hot lap sessions for all three divisions were scheduled for 2 p.m. Along with the 50 lap, $2,000 to win Deery feature, the Hobby Stocks qualify the inside and middle rows of 10 for their Saturday night main event and Northern SportMods qualify their inside row of 10 for Saturday’s big dance.

Repeating as Late Model champion at the IMCA Speedway Motors is just about the only thing that could make an already tremendous season even better for Ray Guss Jr.

Guss will clinch his first career Deery Series title when he starts his heat race this afternoon, adding that crown to the national, three local track and Allstar Performance Illinois State championships he clinched in August.

The Milan, Ill., driver has already won four tour events in the Hershel Roberts ride.

“It’s been unreal,” Guss admitted after pre-race tech.  “When he asked me to start driving his car last July I told him I’d be honored to. I don’t know why I was the one who was blessed to race his car. Everything has just clicked for us.”

“To be Super Nationals champion again would be the icing on the cake,” added Guss. “Hershel’s son Ken is devoted to working on this car and his goal was to win this series. To accomplish everything like we have this year is phenomenal.”

With all his provisionals available, Guss is guaranteed starts tonight and the series ending Pepsi USA Nationals at 34 Raceway Sept. 17-18. He’s been getting a steady stream of congratulations on winning the title for the past week but continues to regard them as premature.

“I’ve been around too long to know that there aren’t any guarantees,” he said. “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”

With the first Modified hot lap session minutes away from starting, latecomers have pushed the Northern SportMod car count to 172 Northern SportMods, 133 Hobby Stocks and 43 Late Models.

Josh Most is another driver looking to make it two straight wins.

The 2008 Super Nationals runner-up topped Saturday’s Deery Series feature at Lee County Speedway, racing to the front after restarting at the back on the pack early on and passing race long leader Jason Perry coming out of the final turn.

The engine that took him to victory lane two nights is ago is also the $5,000 power plant he won with in the Memorial Day show at Boone two years ago.

Most is fifth in the tour point standings, one of a number of pleasant surprises this season for the Red Oak, Iowa, hotshoe.

“After not making the first show at West Burlington, maybe we’d make the top 15 in points,” Most said. “The biggest key to this points thing is to make the show.

A five time winner at Shelby County Speedway during the weekly point season, Most pocketed the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels drawing bonus for the second time before topping the thriller in Donnellson.

“I had a good enough car that I could run next to the guy on the bottom,” said Most, who used different lines to make his way to the front after exiting to the pit area with what he thought was a flat tire, being waved back onto the track and restarting at the tail. “I had to make sure I didn’t get pinched in on the straightaway.”

After passing Rob Toland with a couple laps left, Most had the fans on their feet for one of the most exciting finishes in series history, taking the high side on the final turn and getting just enough momentum to beat Perry to the checkers.

“When we got about 10 feet from the flagstand, I knew I had it,” he said.

Tyler Frye is hoping to enjoy the full week of the Super Nationals experience in 2010.

The national Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod point leader finished fourth on the first night of qualifying last year. His wife Diane called at 8 p.m. that evening to tell him she’d gone into labor.

Making trip home to Belleville, Kan., in substantially less time than the six hours it took to get to Boone, Frye was there to welcome son Trein into the world.

“That was the best thing I’ve ever missed a race for, I’ll guarantee you that,” he said.

Sophomore speedster Luke Lemmens is at Super Nationals, looking to build on a season that’s seen him top IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock standings at Thunderhill Raceway and for the State of Wisconsin.

A four time winner at Thunderhill and at Luxemburg Speedway, the Kewaunee, Wis., clipper made priorities of consistency and finishing feature races pay off with titles.

Eighteen years old and a graphics design major at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, he made the move after two seasons in a local four cylinder class.

“The biggest difference was rear wheel drive and the competition level was a lot higher,” Lemmens said.

The car he brought to Boone is sold. Lemmens is in the process of purchasing a Modified for the 2011 campaign.

“The first time I saw this track was Sunday,” he said, contrasting Boone to his Badger State venues. “It’s really dark dirt, it’s really banked and it looks like a fun track.”

Jill George won the first of five Deery Brothers Summer Series heat races and as a result she’ll be the first female driver to start a Late Model main event at Super Nationals.

Mike Garland and Craig Jacobs chased George to the checkers.

Terry Neal, Jon Passick and Jeremiah Hurst advanced from the second heat. Josh Most, Charlie McKenna and Todd Malmstrom ran 1-2-3 in the third.

Ryan Giles, Bobby Hansen and Kevin Sather made up the top thee in heat hour. Boone McLaughlin, Craig Roberts and newly crowned series champion Ray Guss qualified out of the final heat.

Jacobs will take the green for his 21st career Super Nationals Late Model feature later this evening. McLaughlin is in the feature for the 13th time in his career.

Top five finishers from each of two heat races advanced to Saturday’s Arnold Motor Supply Northern SportMod Race of Champions.

Tyler Frye paced the first, sharply run heat ahead of Dylan Book, Eric Flander, Danny Dvorak and Shay Woods.

The second heat saw its share of cautions and casualties. Scott Davis was the flag to flag winner, with Tad Reutzel, Clinton Luellen, Greg Sidles and row five starter Nathan Chodur.

The current farming session was interrupted by rain some 10 minutes apart.

While neither episode of precipitation had the animals lining up two by two, both sent a number of fans who’d left their umbrellas at home to seek refuge under the grandstand.

The song played over the PA after the first downpour, of course, was “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head.”

“B” features for the Late Models are being delayed until track prep can be resumed and completed.

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 6) – He wrapped up his first career Deery Series championship simply by starting his heat race Monday night at Boone Speedway.

Ray Guss Jr. had to work a lot harder, however, to win his second straight IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals championship.

Guss started 15th, steered around trouble to take the lead at midway, then held off Jeff Aikey the last 25 times around the track for the $2,000 checkers.

Eckrich took a provisional, started 23rd and ran third the last 22 laps, never quite able to keep pace with Guss and Aikey. Bruening, another of the nine drivers making their Super Nationals debut, also took a provisional and started 24th in the main event. He got past Giles on the last lap to get into the top four.

Pole starter Terry Neal looked like the car to beat, leading the first 18 laps before colliding with Boone McLaughlin while under yellow and exiting for the pits.

McLaughlin’s turn at the front lasted seven circuits. He got askew after getting too high in the middle of turns three and four, collecting the third running Josh Most in the process.

Guss ducked low to avoid becoming part of that collision, then kept Aikey in check over the course of five restarts that slowed the last half of the contest.

“After starting 15th, I wasn’t sure we’d be able to get to the front because there were just so many good cars here, but once we got to third everything just kind of worked out for us,” he said. “I knew Jeff had gone to the pits but when I looked up at the lap board and saw the 77 there I knew he was flying.”

Aikey, a two time Super Nationals champion, was into fifth by lap 20 and lined up behind Guss for the restart on lap 26. The race was stopped when Jason Rauen ended up on his roof on lap on lap 38.

“After the red flag, I knew I’d have to take the high line. I couldn’t let Jeff take it. It ended up being the fastest line for me,” Guss said. “This was a race we really wanted to win again. It means a lot to all of us.”

Four yellows came out before the first six laps were scored. Neal led McLaughlin, Neal and Most in checking out, as most of half a lap separated Most from Jill George in fifth.

The first female driver to qualify for a Super Nationals Late Model main event, George was briefly in fourth after Neal drove off before giving way to Kevin Sather and Aikey.

Eckrich took a provisional, started 23rd and ran third the last 22 laps, never quite able to keep pace with Guss and Aikey. Bruening, another of the nine drivers making their Super Nationals debut, was the hard charger from the heat and “B” feature and started 24th in the main event. He got past Giles on the last lap to get into the top four.

The win was the fifth of the year and Deery career 21st for Guss. He’ll look to cap off a season that also included the IMCA national, three track and Illinois state championships at the $10,000 to win series finale next weekend at 34 Raceway in West Burlington.
