1978-87 General Motors OEM replacement frames now available from Speedway Motors

VINTON, Iowa (July 23, 2024) – A project nearly two years in the making is days away from becoming reality.

1978-87 General Motors mid-size metric OEM replacement frames will be available from manufacturer Speedway Motors beginning today (Tuesday, July 23).

“This project began due to supply of these OEM frames, last manufactured 37 years ago, and concerns expressed by chassis manufacturers and drivers alike,” said IMCA President Brett Root. “This is the solution we have chosen and we are fortunate to have a 45-year sponsor like Speedway Motors with the resources, knowledge, engineering department and manufacturing facility to produce this frame.”

“Three very popular IMCA divisions, the Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Southern SportMods, really rely on this frame,” he added. “It is their frame of choice.”

Prototype for the frame was released at the PRI trade show in Indianapolis last December. A Stock Car with that frame will be on display on manufacturers’ row during the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s.

“We’ll showcase that car at Boone Speedway in about five weeks,” said Root. “And allow cars with the new frame to compete at IMCA-sanctioned events beginning Oct. 1, the week after the 2024 IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly point season ends.”

A frame print showing mandatory assembly dimensions for the frame to be IMCA legal is posted on the IMCA website.

“The usable supply of these frames has really become an issue for the last three or four years. That situation, and the timeline of development, were similar to what IMCA took with the Chevelle frame several years back,” Root explained. “The timing was appropriate then as well, as it probably extended the life of the IMCA Modified division. This frame will have the same effect on the Stock Car, Hobby Stock and Southern SportMod divisions.”

“It’s a very high quality frame. It really shows what Speedway Motors’ capabilities are,” he continued, “and every division using this OEM replacement frame will benefit from it.”
