Maquoketa Speedway hosts season championships this Saturday

By Rob Hinckley  MAQUOKETA, IA (April 20) – He glanced low and high.   Travis Denning prefers the low groove at Maquoketa Speedway, but he made an exception Saturday evening. Denning pulled the number one pill on the redraw and launched to a flag to flag, 20-lap QCJeeps.com IMCA Modified victory.  “I saw those guys coming and I usually don’t like to run high,” Denning said in victory lane. “But it worked when I had to use it and was great.” Brad Moring sped from the second spot and stayed there. Top runners Bryce Garnhart, Jeff Larson and Ray Cox, Jr. came next.  “Any one of these guys can win here,” Denning added. “This is a great deal on a Saturday night – great competition.”  Denning took home $700 on the night before Easter.  Tyler Soppe made it two straight in the B&D Pit Stop IMCA Northern SportMods. By Anthony Ainslie & Jerry Mackey  MAQUOKETA, Iowa (May 25, 2024) – With 31 drivers signed in for the night, making the starting field for Saturday’s Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod main event at Maquoketa Speedway was a challenge. Shane Paris proved up to that challenge with another impressive run to the checkers on the fast quarter-mile oval. Paris advanced to the front quickly all the way from his 12th place staring position and went on to record the win ahead of Jarrett Franzen, who advanced nine positions. Josh Starr rounded out the top three.  The Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature saw drivers race every inch of the track as three- and four-wide battles were witnessed throughout the 20-lap main event.  Charlie Mohr advanced from a fourth row start to take the win ahead of Brandon Jewell and Tim Current. By Rob Hinckley MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 8) – The pill draw was key for Jeff Larson Saturday at Maquoketa Speed­way. The Freeport, Ill. ace drew the number one after his heat and fended off a crazy finish to win the QCJeeps.com IMCA Modified 25-lap special and the $1,000 top prize, as well as a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot berth.  Larson led all but two laps that a high-side charging Ray Cox Jr. paced. A caution as the white flag was about to fly bunched the field for a two-lap dash. Cox broke on the restart to bring out another yellow. Larson ran the low groove early in the event, switched high to try and run down Cox and then finished high to outrun Timmy Current.
