Carter Sweeps Modified and Stock Car Features at Southern Iowa Frostout Opener

By Ben Deatherage

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa (Mar. 28, 2025) — Oskaloosa’s Cayden Carter had a flawless opening night at Bloomfield Speedway, sweeping both the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified and Sunoco IMCA Stock Car features during the first night of the Southern Iowa Frostout. Each win was worth $1,250 on the 3/8-mile oval at the Davis County Fairgrounds.

In the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified main, eight-time reigning Hancock County Speedway track champion Jeremy Mills took command at the green flag before Tripp Gaylord powered into the lead on lap two. Gaylord, the defending Marshalltown Speedway champion and Colorado native now living in Iowa, held strong out front while fending off challenges.

Austen Becerra eventually moved past Mills for second. Becerra, fresh off his IMCA.TV Clash On The Coast title a few weeks ago, piloted the Jon and Joyce Fuller-owned No. 22 machine. Meanwhile, Carter began working the high side and took third from Mills just before a lap 12 caution.

Driving the Joe Ferguson-owned No. 10C Modified, Carter capitalized on the restart as Gaylord dropped low to defend against Becerra, leaving the top wide open. Carter ripped around the cushion and swept past Gaylord in turn four on lap 14 to take the lead. From there, the 2018 Harris Clash winner pulled away and went untouched to earn his first Razor Chassis North Central Region win of 2025. Gaylord finished second with Becerra in third.

Carter wasn’t done yet.

In the Sunoco IMCA Stock Car feature, he quickly got to the front aboard the Michael Peterson Motorsports No. 1X and never looked back, leading flag-to-flag for a dominant win in EQ Cylinder Heads Northern Region competition.

While Carter checked out, deep lapped traffic created a fierce battle for third. Wisconsin’s Presley Harrington made a solid drive to claim second, while former Marshalltown Speedway track champion Michael Jannette fought his way to third.

Van Wyk Dominates for SportMod Score

Oskaloosa’s Dylan Van Wyk took control early in the $1,250-to-win Karl Chevrolet IMCA Northern SportMod feature and never looked back to earn his first win of the new campaign. The 2023 CJ Speedway track champion rocketed to the lead and built a huge advantage before a lap six caution bunched the field.

On the restart, 2023 Harris Clash winner Cam Reimers moved into second, but Van Wyk quickly pulled away again. A fierce battle for third unfolded between Brayton Carter and Missouri’s Dakota Girard, with Carter — the reigning Iowa State and Marshalltown Speedway champion — eventually taking the spot.

A late caution set up a green-white-checkered finish, but Van Wyk nailed the restart and cruised to victory. Reimers and Carter rounded out the podium.

Hemsley Wins Three-Way Battle for Hobby Stock Victory

Kale Hemsley outlasted a wild three-car battle to earn his first B&B Racing Chassis

Northern Region win of 2025 in the Sunoco IMCA Hobby Stock feature.

Corey Van Derwilt jumped to the early lead before Hemsley took over on lap three. The 2023 Marshalltown Speedway track champion held strong up top as the two swapped lines. Van Derwilt made a strong move out of turn two to briefly regain the lead, but a lap seven caution nullified the pass.

On the restart, Van Derwilt stayed low, allowing Brooklyn’s Briar Kriegel to storm around the high side and complete a double pass on lap nine. Kriegel held off several challenges from Hemsley before a late bobble let Hemsley slip by with two laps to go.

Hemsley held on for the win, followed by Van Derwilt in second and Kriegel in third.

Reu Rules Sport Compacts

The Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact finale began with Katelynn Watts jumping to the early lead, but Clayton Webster slipped by the Lady Eagle racer at the line to lead the opening lap.

Brandon Reu quickly went to work on the leader, applying steady pressure over several laps before making the pass for the top spot. Once out front, the Donnellson driver was untouchable, pulling away from the field to open his 2025 winning account.

Luke Fraise made a late charge to get around Webster with just a handful of laps remaining and secured the runner-up position. The battle for third went right down to the wire, with Barry Taft edging Webster at the line to complete the podium.
