Brown, VanderBeek, Anderson score wins before rain halts CJ

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 10, 2024) – Night number two of the 2024 IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing season at CJ Speedway was held Friday with Superior Steering Wheel & Graphics providing sponsorship and bonus money for all feature winners. 

The Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds saw defending track champion Jarrett Brown shoot into the lead from his outside front row start and go on to lead flag to flag in scoring the Fast Shafts All Star Invitational eligible qualifier and the $1,000 first place prize money.

Brown had the field bunched up to his rear bumper following a minor spin and on the restart it appeared that Kurt Kile may be able to mount a challenge for the lead but Brown was able to move back out to a comfortable lead. Kile finished second to Brown ahead of Kyle Madden. 

The IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars saw a first-time visitor to the CJ Speedway on Friday night. Zach VanderBeek has been racing for many years but had never been to the CJ Speedway.

VanderBeek is a very accomplished Modified driver and owns VanderBuilt Race Cars in New Sharon. The newly-constructed IMCA Stock Car that VanderBeek drove to victory on Friday night was only on the track for the second time. The 33Z is a sharp looking and very fast IMCA Stock Car.

 “I have raced Modifieds all over the country and this is the first time that I have ever been to CJ. I love this cool place,” VanderBeek said from victory lane.

He’d taken the lead early from Corey Strothman and went on to score an impressive win over Strothman. Scott Jordan ran a strong race in taking third.

The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod main event provided plenty of racing excitement with three different drivers taking their turns at the point position.

Week number one winner Shaun Slaughter led early before John Oliver Jr. took over the top spot. Oliver led for the majority of the race until Logan Anderson was able to execute a well-timed slider in taking over the top spot with three laps to go. Anderson took the win ahead of Oliver and Slaughter. 

The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock main event took the green with opening night winner Luke Phillips starting from the pole position.

Phillips and fellow front row starter Preston McDonald raced side-by-side the first couple of laps before Phillips was able to take control of the top spot. With five laps in, the skies opened up, bringing the night’s racing action to an end.

Due to the fact the Hobby Stock main event had not yet reached the halfway point which would have made it an official race, the main event was suspended. This Friday, May 17, the race program will start with the conclusion of the Hobby Stock feature. Phillips will be on point with all cars lined up in running order and the remaining seven laps will be run.

Following the conclusion of the Hobby Stock feature, the regularly scheduled Extreme Equipment Rentals of Muscatine Race Night will be held in its entirety. Hot laps get underway at 7 p.m. with racing to follow.

Richardson tops CJ Speedway Stock feature

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (July 10) – A great field of drivers packed the infield at CJ Speedway on a beautiful Friday night for racing on July 10. The racing action was excellent all night on a perfectly prepared race track thanks to Larry Richardson.  Twenty-one drivers took the green in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature and the Stock Cars lived up to their nickname of The Class Too Tough To Tame as fans were treated to three- and four-wide racing throughout the feature. Howard Gordon Jr. led early before Shane Richardson was able to break out of a pack of contenders to take the lead. Richardson held off the constant challenges by David Brandies in the late going to score the win by a slim margin. Brandies took second ahead of Jason Cook.  Cody Staley led the caution-free Mach-1 Sport Compact feature flag to flag. Eckrich, VanDenBerg, Bell, Benischek score CJ wins

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (July 3) – After a two week hiatus due to weather cancellations, racing returned to the CJ Speedway with an outstanding night of racing which saw 80 cars pack the infield.  The grand finale of the night that saw everything that a race track could offer was the IMCA Modi­fied main event. Twenty drivers took the green flag and veteran Steve Johnson ran out front until Jeff Larson was able to wrestle the lead away.  Front row starter Denny Eckrich ran in the lead pack the entire race, found the perfectly prepared track to his liking and made a late-race charge to take the lead from Larson as the laps wound down. Another driver on a late race charge was Derrick Stewart. When the checkers flew it was Eckrich taking the win with a slight margin over Stewart and Larson. Out of the field, Strothman wins on the track at CJ

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (June 18) – On a warm sultry night, racing action went on at the CJ Speedway with a quick racing program being run just before rains moved in at the Louisa County Fairgrounds. The headliner of the night was the 20-lap IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature and on Friday night it belonged to Corey Strothman.  The C4 of Strothman started on the front row and was never seriously challenged as he raced to the win. The action behind Strothman was hot and heavy as several drivers took their turns racing in the second position. When the checkers flew it was Adam Bell crossing under the checkers in second ahead of Kirk Kinsley and Shane Richardson. Strothman stated in victory lane, “We are finally caught up on the farm so it is now time to start racing.”  Brandon Banks chased down early leader Kyle Madden and took the lead in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature and went on to score his second feature win in a row at CJ Speedway.
