Henderson flies to finish at Froggy 44

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (June 29, 2024) – Cottage Grove Speedway paid tribute to the late Melvin Walker and Dusten Henderson went home with the $444 payday from Saturday’s Froggy 44 special for Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compacts.

Henderson made his way to the front from sixth starting, taking the double checkers ahead of Burnie Bryant.

The Froggy 44 finale started with Kerry Cooper building a big lead as Michael Kennerly and Melissa Bryant battled over second.

As the race stayed green, Burnie Bryant got around daughter Melissa for second on lap eight and tried to catch up with Cooper while Henderson started to knock on the door for third.

The caution waved on lap 10 and on the restart, Kennerly bounced back to fourth and obtained third with a pass around Melissa Bryant. Henderson rebounded to third with 32 laps to go. While all this happened, Cooper and Burnie Bryant were a close first and second.

After a multi-car pile-up in turn two, the yellow flag returned on the 14th circuit. On the ensuing restart, Burnie Bryant again tried to thread the needle under Cooper for first. Mike Wichert challenged Henderson for third.

A couple caution flags waved that kept the field stacked up. Henderson put up a great run on the outside and got past Burnie Bryant and eventually Cooper to become the new race leader on lap 24. Cooper retained second while Wichert moved up to third.

The field began to get strung out a little bit as the race stayed green, but it allowed Henderson to construct a commanding lead over the rest of the competitors. 

Burnie Bryant made a late-race move to get back into second after Cooper spun, and Cooper was able to recover and finish third. Tiffany Towns was fourth and Charles Trissell earned fifth.

Curtis Towns was the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds winner and Trevor Points topped the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod main.

Williamson wins first of season at Freedom Cup

(July 5) – Jesse Williamson raced to his first Mohawk Metal IMCA Modi­fied feature win of the season on the second night of Cottage Grove Speedway’s Freedom Cup.  Paul Rea set the tone early, blazing the trail the first four laps before Grey Ferrando took control. Ferrando navigated his machine in the top spot until lap nine. Williamson was the one to make the pass, driving his younger brother Kevin’s car, and held on for the balance of the distance for his first victory of the year. Collen Winebarger ended his evening in second while Bricen James posted a third-place re­sult.  Finishing fourth was Rea and rounding out the top five was Jake Mayden. Patience pays off at Cottage Grove for Schmidt 

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (May 11, 2024) – Patience paid off Saturday night for David Schmidt. The Roseburg racer kept things close before finally finding his way to the front of Saturday’s Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod main event at Cottage Grove Speedway. Jason Kocks took control of the top-place position early on. The Creswell pilot had to deal with four straight restarts but maintained the top-place position each time. However, when the field came back to life after the sixth caution, he was challenged and overtaken by Aaron Bloom on lap eight. Bloom then tried to separate from the rest of the pack, but the persistent Schmidt kept things close. Schmidt tried to make the pass numerous times but couldn’t until finally on the 21st circuit. Unfortunately, shortly after being passed, Bloom had mechanical problems that forced him to retire early. Schmidt had no issues once in first and picked up the win. La Pine teenager Landyn Philpott rallied to finish second, with Kocks wrapping up the podium in third.

Trenchard is 10th to top Cottage Grove Modified main

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Aug. 3) – Nick Trenchard became the 10th different Mohawk Metal IMCA Modified winner of the season at Cottage Grove Speedway on Saturday night. Eston Whisler was ultra-quick at the start, pacing the first 10 circuits before being overtaken by Evan Britton. Britton was collected in a wreck in lapped traffic on the next trip around the track and that put Whilser back in front. He led until lap 16 when John Campos got around him. Campos had to battle for the lead after a restart with 17 circuits completed. Trenchard powered his way underneath Campos to take over the top spot.    However, Campos was not going to go into the night quietly, dueling with Trenchard throughout the closing laps. Trenchard came out on top to win his first victory at CGS in 2019 and become the 10th different driver to best the competition at The Grove. Campos was second over third finishing Aaron Sheelar.  Posting a fourth-place result was Whilser while Kevin Williamson ended his evening in fifth.
