MSD back on board in decal program for IMCA Stock Cars

EL PASO, Texas – MSD returns to the national decal program for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, in its 13th season as a marketing partner with the sanctioning body. The El Paso, Texas, manufacturer and distributor became part of that program in 2015 and again gives $100 product certificates to top 10 drivers in final standings for the Northern and Southern regions. Purchased last September by the Holley family of companies, MSD also continues a contingency awards program benefitting five divisions and the Deery Brothers Summer Series. “IMCA racers are key to MSD’s continued growth and MSD believes in investing in IMCA. We do this by rewarding these racers who work all week to race on the weekend with a lucrative contingency program,” said MSD President Russell Stephens. “The Holley/MSD family of products are present on nearly every IMCA race car and the contingency program is a way for us to say thank you to the racers. Good luck all the IMCA racers as they kick off the 2016 race season.” Top eligible drivers in each of [Read More]

Attention to little details pays off big for Hammock in Sprint Series of Texas opener

PAIGE, Texas (March 19) – Added attention to little details helped pay off for Jerry Hammock in the Saturday night Sprint Series of Texas opener at Cotton Bowl Speedway. Hammock led start to finish of the 20-lapper for IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Cars at Paige and had an advantage of close to half a straightaway over Jeff Day at the checkers. “We ran the bottom. The track was hard and slick and never built a cushion. The sweet spot was right around the bottom,” said Hammock, who’d started outside the front row. “It seemed like every time we caught lapped traffic somebody would spin and there was a caution, so lapped cars weren’t a problem.” Jason Howell, two-time and defending champion Dustin Woods and Johnny Miller completed the top five. Hard charger Kenny Elwood gained the last transfer spot after starting last in his “B” and ended in 10th. Hammock was a three-time SST winner and finished second in the points race last season. He’d won previously at Cotton Bowl in 2014. “We’re excited about [Read More]

Top IMCA Modified cash at Kegger goes to James

POCOLA, Okla. (March 20) – Jeff James couldn’t recall too many details of his one previous visit to Tri-State Speedway, as a spectator some time in the late 1990s. He’s got $2,000 to help him remember his second trip to the Pocola, Okla., speedplant. James led all 25 laps of the Sunday Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event at the Cecil Harlan Memorial Kegger, building a lead of as much as a straightaway before pulling away again after a caution bunched the field back up with just two circuits to go. “It was a pretty good way to start off the season,” understated James, who’d earned the pole by winning his Saturday qualifier, “especially considering I’d never raced there before.” The win came in just his third start in a new Skyrocket. James had been 12th and then seventh in outings at Beatrice Speedway’s Spring Nationals. The new Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier took the checkers ahead of defending race winner Tate Cole, outside row one starter Richie Tosh, Drew Armstrong and teammate Todd [Read More]

Ashley figures out Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods

By Ben Deatherage JASPER, Ore. – When it comes to the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods in 2015, Gene Ashley seemed to have the IMCA division all figured out. The veteran racer out of Jasper collected his first career championship in the class at Cottage Grove Speedway. “The biggest thing is, I couldn’t have done this without Eric (his youngest son),” commented Ashley. “He put this car together for me and when I blew my motor in the middle of the year he gave me his so I could finish it out.” Ashley’s driving career started at the young age of 16 in 1970, running demolition derbies at the now-defunct Eugene Speedway, before eventually venturing to CGS in the mid-1970s. He finished as runner-up a few times but never won a title until the age of 61. “I’ve really enjoyed racing but what I think I love the most is watching my kids (Ricky and Eric) race,” he continued, “and to actually race against them over the years, I thought that would never happen.” Ashley collected [Read More]
