Stock Car checkers fly for VanStraten in Shawano lidlifter

By Scott Owen SHAWANO, Wis. (April 18) – Defending track champion Travis VanStraten raced to the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car win on opening night of the 53rd year of racing at Shawano Speedway. Mike Schmidt held the lead for the first four laps of the race until VanStraten took over the point. He began to pull away from the rest of the pack while Brandon Czarapata raced to second. The race went green to checkered. VanStraten picked up where he left off last year, in victory lane. Czarapata took second and Steven Stewart finished third. At the start of the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature, it looked as though defending track champion Marcus Yarie would run away and hide. Lautenbach lands $1,000 checkers at 141 opener

(April 18) – 141 Speedway kicked off the much anticipated season with a bang on Saturday night as 147 drivers signed in to do battle and be one of the first cars to lock up their spot in the chase. Brad Lautenbach picked up his first IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified win of the season and a $1,000 pay day courtesy of Prestige Custom Cabinetry. Lautenbach, the defending Allstar Performance State champion and already on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational, picked the one pill and then had to wait to officially lead any laps as the race saw four cautions before the first circuit was scored. Lautenbach stayed in charge in a contest that went caution-free from that point. Brian Mullen got close a couple times but could never challenge. Miller prevails for first PASS victory of season

PORT ROYAL, Pa. (April 18) – Saturday at Port Royal Speedway, defending oval series champion Jeff Miller captured the feature for his first Pennsylvania Sprint Series win of the year. Miller allowed Ken Duke to lead only the first lap of the 18-lap IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car main event before taking over after starting second. Miller’s pace was slowed twice over the distance but to no avail for his challengers. Scott Ellerman crossed the line second followed by Duke, Zach Newlin and Nathan Gramley. Feature results – 1. Olson, Ciesielski, Irvine beat the rain at Independence

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (Apr. 18) – Three of four features were run to completion before rain halted action Saturday night at Independence Motor Speedway. The program, which was the final of two draw/redraw specials for IMCA state, regional and national points before weekly points racing starts at the speedway April 25, welcomed 90 race teams to the pit area. Tony Olson took advantage of his pole position start by racing into the lead at the drop of the green in the 15-lap Tenacity Graphics IMCA Northern SportMod feature. Olson paced the field while Jenae Gustin made her way into second from a third row start on the second circuit. Olson, who built a quick half-straightaway lead, extended his advantage in lapped traffic before a trio of cautions slowed action with two laps to go. WEBSTER CITY, Iowa – The Deery Brothers Summer Series event scheduled for Saturday, April 18 at Hamilton County Speedway has been rained out. The next event for the Late Model tour is set for Sunday, May 3 at Quad City Speedway in East Moline, Ill.

Sanction numbers guarantee IMCA record-breaking centennial season

VINTON, Iowa – What was already guaranteed to be a history-making centennial season will be a record-breaking one for IMCA as well. Contracts for a total of 415 sanctions were in hand as of April 15 for the 2015 season. That’s nine more than were issued last year and another two dozen are expected to be returned as more tracks get closer to holding opening night programs. IMCA Modified sanctions have topped 100 every year since 1992; the number of Northern SportMod and Southern SportMod sanctions is expected to exceed 100 for the first time this year. “One factor we’ve noticed in the increase is tracks that have already been sanctioned are adding new divisions,” noted IMCA President Brett Root. “RaceSaver Sprint Cars are obviously playing a role, too. Callahan collects top Deery cash at Farley again

FARLEY, Iowa (April 17) – Something about Farley Speedway brings out the best in Joel Callahan. Callahan won his third straight Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Farley Friday night, earning $3,000. He’d also topped IMCA Late Model tour events there each of the last two Septembers. Jeff Aikey started outside Callahan on the front row and led the first 22 of 50 laps. The field was under yellow and ready to resume racing when Aikey pulled into infield with a flat tire. That put Callahan on point and he stayed in front as the last 28 laps ran caution-free. Tyler Droste and defending series champion Justin Kay both avoided becoming part of the attrition and advanced 15 positions to second and third, respectively. Point leader Andy Nezworski was a plus eight positions to fourth and hard charger Tyler Bruening advanced 17 spots to fifth. Matt Ryan started 17th and ended in sixth. 22 chassis builders enter IMCA Manufacturers’ Cup contest

VINTON, Iowa – National and regional honors will be determined by 22 chassis builders entered in the seventh annual IMCA Manufacturers’ Cup contest. Manufacturers’ Cup standings are based on makes of chassis driven by top 10 drivers in each of the five Modified regions. The builder with the highest overall point total will be recognized as the 2015 national Manufacturer of the Year and receive a $500 prize and trophy during the national awards banquet in November.
