Five win Kossuth County fair features

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (Aug. 4) – Derek Green, Ryan Ruter, Shannon Anderson, Tyler Thompson and Jake Simpson all earned feature wins at the Kossuth County Fair Race at Kossuth County Speedway in Algona on Thursday. Feature winners received $1,000 in the Modified, Stock Car, Northern SportMod and Hobby Stock classes along with a six-foot tall trophy. Green was the most dominating winner of the evening as he won for the second time this summer at Algona. Craig Berhow and Troy Swearingen were on the front row at the start of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature with Swearingen taking the lead on the opening circuit. On the next lap, Green used the high side of the oval to fly past Swearingen and immediately built a nice lead. Three laps later, the caution flag came out but once the race restarted the only question that remained was who would finish second as Green ran away from the 18-car field. Dan Hanselman prevailed in the battle for the runner-up spot with Swearingen third. Berhow was [Read More]

Sibley County checkers are Minnesota first for Nichols

ARLINGTON, Minn. (Aug. 3) – Mike Nichols added his first-ever win in Minnesota to his collection of 400-plus IMCA Sunoco Stock Car checkers Wednesday night. Nichols topped the $1,500 to win Sibley County Stock Car Shootout at Arlington Raceway, outrunning a host of home state heroes. “This was just the second time I’ve even raced in Minnesota. The first time was an October race at Jackson in 2000 or 2001, so it’s been a while,” he said. “Arlington is pretty similar to Shelby County Speedway (in Harlan, Iowa), my Saturday night track, so I kind of felt at home.” Nichols started the 25-lapper from inside row four. He was in the lead by lap five and battled Arlington regular Dan Mackenthun much of the distance. Two cars running in the top five brought out the only caution of the race on lap 20; mid-pack starter Derek Green found the fast line late and took over second but ran out of laps in his pursuit of the leader. Mackenthun, Matt Schauer and Luke Sathoff rounded out [Read More]

Deery Bros Late Model Summer Series

Kay continues Deery Series dominance at Cedar County

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 2) – A quick call to the assessor’s office would reveal that Justin Kay does not own Cedar County Raceway. It just seems like he does. Kay won his third straight Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at the Tipton oval Tuesday night, leading the last 31 circuits in a fast-paced 50-lapper that ran caution-free. The $2,000 victory was his IMCA Late Model tour career 18th and second this season. “We’ve always run really well at Tipton. It’s probably one of the tracks I have the most laps on, too,” said Kay, who started racing there in his 4-cylinder days. “Everything about that track I love. It’s always slick and smooth.” “I ran the bottom and when I moved up to get around lapped cars it was good there, too,” he added. “I think I used about every inch of the track.” Cayden Carter was checking out on the rest of the field just six laps into the contest, but saw his big lead begin to evaporate after catching up with the back [Read More]

IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour checkers fly for Dripps’ first Tipton triumph

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 2) – Corey Dripps put another check on his bucket list by taking the $1,000 check at Tuesday’s Hawkeye Dirt Tour event at Cedar County Raceway. Dripps led all 30 laps of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature at Tipton, outrunning defending tour champion Kyle Brown for the midweek win at Tipton. “This is one of the few tracks in Iowa where I hadn’t won at. It’s good to get that off my bucket list, especially at a special like the Hawkeye Dirt Tour,” he said, also noting the victory was powered by a Ford motor. “In the 1990s I was leading and almost had a lot of races won here but it didn’t happen.” The front pair got a late break when coming onto traffic with three laps left. The first slower car they encountered pulled off and gave both plenty of track to determine the finish; Dripps got two lapped cars ahead of Brown before their 1-2 finish. Brown had his best finish of the 2016 series season while [Read More]

Saturday was Christmas in July at Boone Speedway

BOONE, Iowa (July 30) – It was Christmas in July Saturday at Boone Speedway and the drivers getting the wins were as happy as the youngsters were getting to see Santa. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified driver Al Wolfgram and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod driver Jake McBirnie made it back-to-back wins. Andrew Burg made a return visit to the Speedway pay off by capturing his first local IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock win and Nebraskan Kyle Vanover made his first visit to the track pay off, taking home the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car hardware. Last week, Wolfgram won his first career race in the Modified division. On Saturday, Wolfgram found himself right back in the winner’s circle at Boone. In fact, he made it look easy, leading all but the first lap on his march to the win in the 20-lap feature. Wolfgram stretched his lead, happy to let a distant pack of four cars sort it out for positions two through five. Russ Dickerson made a last-second pass out of turn four to take the runner-up [Read More]
