Riley rules Raceway Park’s Jim Johnson Memorial

By Bob Coney JEFFERSON, S.D. (May 15) – Dave Riley got the best of a stellar field of IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks, at Raceway Park’s Jim Johnson Memorial. Riley matched the highest-paying wins of his career with the $1,000 Sunday night checkers. Front row starter Tony Fetterman had shot to the lead and held off various challengers throughout three restarts. Following the fourth caution, Riley made his move on the outside in turns three and four to take over up front. A late caution resulted in a green, white, checkered finish and Riley denied a final charge by Fetterman to take the victory, his third this season at Jefferson including opening night of the South Dakota Spring Nationals. Behind the lead duo, “B” feature winner David Miller completed a charge through the field for third ahead of Damon Richards and Matt Baker Thirty-two drivers checked in and sought shares of a Hobby Stock purse topping $3,000. Day has best night in Sprint Series of Texas show at Boothill Speedway

GREENWOOD, La. (May 14) – Jeff Day crossed the state line to race his way to victory lane in a second IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Car tour Saturday night. Day topped the Sprint Series of Texas feature at Louisiana’s Boothill Speedway, outrunning Jason Howell to the checkers. Day’s son Michael, Dustin Woods and Ty Johnson completed the top five. The 25-lapper was interrupted by just a single caution and the frontrunners had to negotiate traffic much of the way. Michael Day started on the pole, directly in front of his father, and led early. Howell came up to contend before Jeff Day opted for a higher line around the oval at Greenwood. “Jason pretty much showed me the top in (turns) three and four,” Day said. “Once I found the line we pretty much ran the race out and got the win.” “The track was slick and had a good cushion,” added Day, also the winner of an Elite Non-Wing Series event this spring. “I was able to get through lapped traffic with slide jobs.” [Read More]

Callahan cashes in at Quad City Deery

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (May 15) – What looked to be another night for a Deery Brothers Summer Series rookie to shine ended with veteran Joel Callahan in victory lane instead Sunday at Quad City Speedway. First-year IMCA Late Model tour driver Cayden Carter led the first 32 times around the East Moline oval before Callahan caught up and led to the $2,000 checkers. Carter ended in second while Tyler Droste, the winner at Quad City last July and 2015 series rookie of the year, took third. “We can usually run the low side when we need to and it worked well for us tonight,” Callahan said following his career fourth series victory, and first away from Farley Speedway. “There were a couple times at midway when I got alongside but couldn’t get past. I had the advantage of running second but he (Carter) was tough.” Carter had started outside the front row and set sail from the top side. Callahan drew the fifth starting spot and stayed glued to the bottom. The last 39 laps [Read More]

BOONE, Iowa (May 14) – After suffering mechanical issues in last week’s IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature, Jay Schmidt got back on track and snapped up the feature win Saturday at Boone Speedway. Cody Gustoff led the 12-lap IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature from start to finish in securing his first visit to the winner’s circle this season. Twin 20 triumphs for Linkenhoker, Worrell in Virginia Sprint Series Shenandoah show

By Jim Haines SHENANDOAH, Va. (May 14) – A rain delay on April 30 after the trophy dash meant a changeup format was put into play when Virginia Sprint Series drivers returned to Shenandoah Speedway Saturday night for a pair of twin 20-lap features. Anthony Linkenhoker became the first repeat winner for IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Cars this season in the rescheduled race, Glenn Worrell earned his first pavement win in the nightcap and Bill Rice went home with two runner-up finishes. The first feature had Worrell and Tony Harris on the front row with Harris out first. Rice was strong up high right behind them and got Worrell first and then Harris on lap six, but Linkenhoker was coming on strong as well. Linkenhoker was in second by lap 10 and in the lead for good two laps later. Worrell was pressing Rice as laps ran out.
