Mullins saves best for last in Langley RaceSaver win

By Jim Haines HAMPTON, Va. (July 2, 2022) – The annual Fourth of July Weekend event for the Virginia Sprint Series was a show case for patience as Matt Mullins led early, gave it up to save his tires and then blasted back by with a few laps to go for the win Saturday at Langley Speedway.  Chris Humblet and Mullins had paced the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car field to green with Mullins out first and Humblet and Jerald Harris in tow.  Mullins was smooth out front as Harris got to second and Billy Hubbard followed. Hubbard made it to second and took off like a jet after Mullins, who was catching the back of the pack as the pavement laps really clicked off. Mullins stayed smooth and straight as Hubbard showed speed but also tire smoke and at lap 15 he found the lead as Mullins stayed on plan.  Hubbard was on it lap after lap as Mullins kept him in range and as the tires were going away he pounced. MEDFORD, Ore. (July 3, 2022) – Troy Foulger called his victory at Southern Oregon Speedway’s fifth annual R. Charles Snyder Salute his “third good win” in a Friesen Performance IMCA Modified this season. The Sunday checkers were also good for $7,300, making it his career biggest payday.  The California speedster started ninth after missing the redraw by one spot, caught Cory Sample and then Bricen James for the lead with a dozen laps or so to go, then held onto the front spot following a caution late in the 40-lapper.  “Five thousand dollars had been our career best when we won the inaugural Snyder race and we ran second last year, so it was nice to improve one spot,” Foulger said. “There were a lot of heavy hitters here.” Bobby Hogge IV was the runner-up and hard charger Mark Wauge motored from 16th starting to third. James and Sample completed the top five.  The first caution came after midway and at just the right time, said Foulger, who was in lapped traffic and wasn’t quite sure [Read More]

Larson first to Durbin Memorial checkers

By Rob Hinckley EAST MOLINE, Ill. (July 3, 2022) – Just like any skilled veteran dirt race car driver, Jeff Larson remembered the best line around East Moline Speedway and it paid off big time Sunday evening.  “Bone” redrew no. 1 after winning his Friesen Performance IMCA Modified heat race and rolled to a flag-to-flag victory in the third Greg Durbin Memorial.  After waiting out a handful of cautions, the defending national champion diamoned turn one, launched the backstretch and crept through turns three and four for 25 laps en route to a $1,500 pay day plus some bonus money. That same style also carried him to the 2021 EMS track title. Last year’s Durbin Memorial winner Travis Denning, started seventh and maneuvered by teammate B.J. Jackson for the runner-up spot on lap seven, but Larson’s familiar Bader Construction No. B1 repeatedly opened big advantages. Denning also was second behind Eric Barnes, Greg Durbin’s brother, in the inaugural event in 2020. Barnes drew the outside pole, but dropped out with a mechanical issue and finished [Read More]
