Long tow to Lee County pays off for Mullen

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (April 19) – Mike Mullen made the long tow from Wisconsin pay off by winning Friday’s IMCA Modified main event at Lee County Speedway. Chad Giberson and Dakota Simmons led the field to green in the 20-lap Budweiser IMCA Modified feature, with Simmons grabbing the initial lead on John Oliver Jr. and Dennis LaVeine. Oliver used the momentum off the top to grab the top spot on lap five. Mullen made it a three-car battle for the lead then on lap eight passed Oliver Jr. to take away the top spot. The one and only caution of the race appeared on the next lap. On the restart, Mullen jumped back out front with Michael Long and Oliver close behind. Long tried to keep pace over the final half of the race but Mullen was able to hold on to score his first-ever win at Donnellson. Ward rewarded with opening night win at Marshalltown

By Joyce Eisele MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (April 19) – Tim Ward saw his efforts rewarded with the opening night IMCA Modified feature win Friday at Marshalltown Speedway. Troy Cordes led the troops when lap one was scored, with Jimmy Gustin hot on his tail and Ward closing the gap quickly as well. Ward made his way into the lead at lap six, kept it and pulled away in the closing laps to take the comfortable win. Gustin followed from a distance in second, and Cayden Carter came from starting 10th to score third place honors. Steve Meyer got the lead back from Jeff Mueller, then held off Ricky Thornton Jr. for the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car checkers. The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature went to Shannon Anderson, who knows victory lane very well at Marshalltown and beyond. Anderson started eighth and snatched the lead on lap six from Mike Kincaid. Independence, Dubuque dates next on Deery Series schedule

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa – A Deery Brothers Summer Series doubleheader is on the docket this weekend, as the 33rd annual tour for IMCA Late Models travels to Independence Motor Speedway and Dubuque Speedway. A top prize of $2,000 is on the line Saturday, April 27 at Independence while the winner of the Sunday, April 28 Hershel Roberts/Ray Guss Sr. Memorial at Dubuque goes home with $2,500. Both features pay a minimum of $300 to start. The Sunday show was rescheduled after a mid-April twinbill at Maquoketa and Dubuque was lost to unseasonable weather. The 492nd event in series history takes Deery drivers and fans to Independence for the 30th time. Pit gates and the grandstand open at 4 p.m. Hot laps are at 6 p.m. with racing to follow. Sprint foes at Hagerstown can’t keep up with Jones

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (April 20) – Jonathon Jones wasn’t sure he would make the trip to Hagerstown Speedway until Saturday morning, but he sure made it worthwhile by topping the field of 23 IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars for the win that evening. Christian Rumsey challenged but ran out of laps and settled for second in the main event, co-sanctioned by the Virginia Sprint Series and Laurel Highland Sprint Series. Tyler Denochick and Jones paced the feature field to green. Jones stayed up high and that would be the magic line as he kept his car smooth and fast with Rumsey quickly challenging for second. Rumsey lost that spot to Drew Ritchey for a few laps before regaining the position and set off after Jones. (April 19-20) – Two IMCA Modified feature wins earned Jordan Grabouski a bonus while Shayle Bade took opening night honors in the Sprint Series of Nebraska at Eagle Raceway’s Ice Breaker Challenge. Grabouski, the defending national champion, topped both $1,000 to win Friday and $2,000 to win Saturday features, an accomplishment that paid off with a $1,000 Twice Is Nice bonus. Kay makes it five straight Deery Series wins at Cedar County

TIPTON, Iowa (April 20) – Another Deery Brothers Summer Series event at Cedar County Raceway ended with another feature win for Justin Kay. Kay won his fifth consecutive IMCA Late Model tour main event at Tipton Saturday night, earning $2,000. The victory was the career 28th for the three-time and defending series champion, now the first driver to win five consecutive Deery events at the same track. “There’s just something about Cedar County,” Kay said of the track he started racing at and where he won the only 4-cylinder track title of his career. “I love racing there.” The 491st event in Deery Series history saw Kay motor from sixth starting to second, then pass pole starter Andy Eckrich on the 13th of 50 circuits. Sunset Speedway Park readies for April 20 Discount Days opener

By Ben Deatherage BANKS, Ore. – After last week’s disappointing rainout things are looking to finally get underway on Saturday, April 20, at Sunset Speedway Park. The Banks Bullring has a full card of racing and will feature a special admission price with $5 for one general admission ticket or $8 for two. Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods will be featured regularly at SSP after only hosting a couple of races last year and will crown a champion for the first time since 2017. Drivers and fans are encouraged to check the track website/Facebook page for weather updates. Pit gates open at 2 p.m. and front gates open at 4 p.m., with racing kicking off at 6 p.m. A family pass (two adults and up to four youth) is offered for $35 while premium seats are available for $25 each.
