Families battle for IMCA Modified crown at Perris

PERRIS, Calif. – When it comes to families in racing one must look no farther than the IMCA Modifieds when they return to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night, June 3. Four of the top five places in the championship standings are occupied by fathers and their racing children and all are expected to be in action Saturday, when spectator gates open at 5 p.m. and the first race will be at 7 p.m. Billy Wormsbecker is the IMCA point leader heading into round four at Perris. However, if he feels some families may stick together and gang up on him, it is perfectly understandable. Mike Kirby, who has two wins in the first three races, trails Wormsbecker by five points. Trailing Kirby by two points is defending track champion Chuck Becker. Becker’s son Brandon, a San Bernardino County sheriff, is currently fourth. Kirby’s daughter Brenda, a college student who turned 21 two weeks ago, is fifth. “When you watch these kids race, it is clear the apple did not fall far from the tree,” Perris Auto Speedway promoter [Read More]

Ricochet is owned by long-time Modified driver John Hansen and information about the company’s shock guard covers is available on Facebook. Feature winner awards will be presented in victory lane while all other Ricochet awards will be presented during the national IMCA banquet in November. “We wanted to make sure a variety of deserving drivers receive the quality Ricochet shock guards, so adding a couple rookie awards to the program was a great step,” IMCA Marketing Director Kevin Yoder said. Clay Sellard starts Dodge City streak

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. (May 28) – Clay Sellard started his own IMCA Modified winning streak Sunday at Dodge City Raceway Park. Sellard battled into the lead on the ninth of 20 rounds and led the rest of the way to put a stop to Cole Traugott’s recent run of domination. While Tracy Link paced the early rounds, Sellard worked forward from 12th on the heels of Mike Lunow, who started one row further up.  The duo reached second and third, respectively, behind Link within a half dozen circuits before charging by on the ninth round with Sellard taking command. Meanwhile, Traugott was working his way through the field from 13th after winning the “B” Main as the driver of the No. 9 was searching for his ninth win in his last nine visits to DCRP. Traugott worked up to second by the 14th round, trailing Sellard by a dozen car-lengths.  Traugott nibbled away at the advantage but could only cut in half by the time the checkered flag flew. Now we’ve got one,” he said. “We’ve been right with these guys and it feels good to be able to get a win.” Sobbing started third and admittedly got a little anxious as he worked his way to the front of the field. “It seemed like once we got into the lead, around midway, there [Read More]

VINTON, Iowa (May 29) – A driver accustomed to winning on IMCA’s biggest stages did so again Monday night. Jimmy Gustin won the IMCA Modified feature on opening night for the Arnold Motor Supply Hawkeye Dirt Tour at Benton County Speedway. The victory was his first-ever at Vinton, his first since the death of his grandfather Dale DeFrance last week and his career 100th in the division. “Winning tonight means a lot to me. We definitely had the right guy watching over us,” Gustin said after the $1,000 to win 35-lapper brought an end to the Memorial Day show. “I’m proud of the accomplishment (winning 100 career features) and joining an elite group of drivers. This is all I needed to get my confidence back. Now we’ve got to start toward 200 wins.” The only caution of the race came on the fourth circuit. Late Model regular John Emerson led the first 17 times around the oval, then got caught behind a slower car and watched Gustin drive by. Hunter Marriott, the $2,000 winner at Vinton [Read More]
