Niehouse shares credit for regional art educator award

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa – Kirk Niehouse has helped present awards to IMCA drivers at countless banquets during his 20-plus years as director of the Stock Car and Hobby Stock divisions. He was the recipient of a regional award at the most recent banquet he attended, however, early this month in New York City. An art instructor at Marshalltown High School, Niehouse received the Western Region Secondary Art Educator Award from the National Art Educators Association. He’d been nominated for the regional award after receiving the Outstanding Secondary Art Educator award from the Art Educators of Iowa. “It was just ‘Wow!’ I never expected to get an award like this,” said Niehouse, who teaches pottery and graphic design to students in grades 9-12. “I didn’t get into teaching for this kind of thing. A lot of my fellow teachers helped me get to this point. It’s not something you accomplish by yourself.” He had been nominated for the state award by another teacher. A Marshalltown High School graduate himself, Niehouse has taught in the district since 2001. [Read More]

Familiar faces in victory lane at Canyon

By Tony Steele PEORIA, Ariz. (March 11) – Repeat winners were the story Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park. Chaz Baca Jr. took home the Speedway Motors Weekly Racing opener for the IMCA Modifieds, coming off a $3,000 payday at the Desert Classic. George Fronsman took home his fourth win in a row in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars while Joe Vlasity battled to become the first repeat winner in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. Baca took the lead near the halfway point of the 25-lap Modified feature and held off Bryson Curry. Curry was fast all throughout the night as he came from the back of his heat race twice to finish third. Starting from the pole, Curry led the way through the first half of the race with Baca on his heels. Around midway, Baca worked his way around Curry and never looked back, showing the strength of his Mark Stewart-owned machine. Mike Strobl worked his way toward the front to finish third. In right place at right time, Russell tops Gordon Woolley Classic at HO’T

ELM MOTT, Texas (March 10) – Tyler Russell didn’t lead the most laps, just the most important one. Russell was in the right place at the right time when leader Paul White lost the handle in Friday’s opening night event for the Elite Non-Wing Sprint Car Series at Heart O’ Texas Speedway. Quick to capitalize on White’s white flag lap misfortune, Russell motored by to win HOT’s Gordon Woolley Classic feature for IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars and $1,000. “It was nice to have a little luck,” said Russell, who battled back and forth with Marcus Thomas while chasing White much of the first 19 circuits. “He threw some real haymakers at me. I was running low, Marcus was running high and we were going to have a good three-way race with Paul on that last lap.” A late yellow added to the drama by setting up a green, white, checkered finish. Thomas, Justin Zimmerman, Johnny Miller and Blake Edwards rounded out the top five. White recovered to finish sixth. The classic was the first race [Read More]

Grabouski completes Spring Nationals IMCA Modified sweep

BEATRICE, Neb. (March 10) – After setting the new Spring Nationals feature win record on Thursday, Jordan Grabouski added to it Friday evening. Grabouski completed his sweep of IMCA Modified features, earning another $2,500 for his career ninth checkers at Beatrice Speedway’s traditional season-opening special. “I had a good car again. Everybody else was kind of running the middle while I ran the bottom,” said Grabouski, also a double winner at Spring Nationals in 2011 and 2015. “This was a great way for us to start the season. You always want to win both (features) but there are so many good drivers here that the odds are against it.” Grabouski started eighth, took the lower line to the front and passed fellow heavy hitter Dylan Smith for the lead before midway in the 30-lapper. He was running with lapped traffic before a caution with 12 circuits to go, then set sail on the ensuing restart and couldn’t be caught. Hunter Marriott, Jesse Sobbing, Jimmy Gustin and Kyle Brown completed the top five. His latest Spring [Read More]
