A first for Arizona as Baca wins Modified crown, IMCA names top champions, rookies of 2023

VINTON, Iowa (Oct. 3, 2023) – After winning his career 100th feature in the division over the Memorial Weekend, Chaz Baca announced that his next goal for the 2023 season would be winning the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified national championship. Goal accomplished. The Mesa driver became the first Arizona driver to earn an IMCA national crown in any division, ending his drive to the title with six straight checkers and a career single-season best 25 feature wins in all. “I’m excited, relieved, everything you can be at once. This is a ‘Wow !’ thing,” said Baca. “We switched to a (2021) Harris car and thought we had a shot at it at the beginning of the season. My whole team, family, friends and sponsors, was really the key. CJ Speedway hosts two outstanding nights of special races

By Jerry Mackey and Anthony Ainslee COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (Sept. 22-23, 2023) – CJ Speedway hosted two special nights of racing on the Louisa County Fairgrounds with racers coming from great distances to delight the race fans. Friday night the 22nd of September was the Battle on the Levee. Originally scheduled to be held during the Louisa County Fair, the race was postponed due to the excessive heat during the summer and was run as the opener of the weekend which also hosted the “Governors Cup,“ special on Saturday. The Battle on the Levee featured a talented field of 86 drivers. Twenty-six Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds took the green and a stellar field battled it out for 20 laps for their main event. When the checkers flew it was Spencer Diercks scoring a hard-fought win ahead of Jarrett Brown. Drew Janssen took third ahead of Todd Shute. $34,000 from engine auction added to purse shares at IMCA Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa (September 20, 2023) – The auction champions’ engines added another $34,000 to the Saturday night purse paid at the 41st annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Engines that powered championship-winning rides of Dylan Thornton in the Stock Cars and Mike Smith both gaveled at $10,000, adding $344.83 to the take home pay for the main event qualifiers in both divisions. Jake Sachau’s Northern SportMod title-winning engine saw a $7,100 top bid, adding $244.83 to purse shares for the other drivers in that event. And the engine that Tim Ward won both the Double Down Prelude and the Modified main event sold for $6,900, generating another $215.63 for each of his Saturday night competitors. CJ Speedway set to host two big nights of racing

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (Sept. 19, 2023) – CJ Speedway, located on the Louisa County Fairgrounds in Columbus Junction, is set to host a racing doubleheader this weekend, Sept. 22 and 23. Friday night, the Battle on the Levee that was originally scheduled to be held during the Louisa County Fair will be held with all drivers gunning for a greatly expanded purse thanks to a very long list of great sponsors. This race was postponed due to the excessive heat that hit Southeast Iowa late in July. Friday night’s racing program will highlight the five divisions of race cars that compete weekly at CJ Speedway. All five classes race under the IMCA banner. On Friday night, Hunter Ferrell claimed the checkered flag in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks followed by John Thomas, Kyler Duggins, Mylee Goldwich-Rhames and Mark Weber. Camron Spangler took the checkers in the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods followed by Julie Keeler, Rayce Green, Waylon Hale and John Patterson. Katie Barthel finished first in the Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact feature followed by Cody Witcher, Ted Neergaard, Jesse Stuckman and Abbi Barthel. Jeramy Hughes moved up five spots to take the win in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main, followed by Steffan Carey, Eric Loyd, Darell Cordary and Allen Bradley. Shelby County Speedway hosts six IMCA divisions at Tiny Lund Memorial, Brandon Saltzman Showdown

HARLAN, Iowa (Sept. 19, 2023) – The 31st annual Tiny Lund Memorial and inaugural Brandon Saltzman Showdown bring six IMCA divisions to Shelby County Speedway this weekend, Sept. 22 and 23. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars race for $1,250 to win on Friday and for a top check of $4,000 on Saturday, with both winners earning B & B Racing Chassis All-Star Invitational qualifying eligibility as well. Saturday’s Friesen Performance IMCA Modified winner earns $1,255 and becomes eligible for the 2024 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. 2023 IMCA point season ends Sunday, Sept. 24

VINTON, Iowa (Sept. 19, 2023) – The 2023 IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season will end this Sunday, Sept. 24. Final points races will be held that day for sanctioned Modifieds, Late Models, Sprint Cars, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, Northern SportMods, Southern SportMods, STARS Mod Lites and Sport Compacts. Track championship bonus points will be figured and national and regional champions and rookies of the year, as well as the Junior National Champion and Lady Eagle winner, announced as soon as possible after all race reports are received. Track and series officials have until noon Central Standard Time on Monday, Oct. 23 to notify IMCA of corrections that affect their top 15 point standings before 2023 standings become official. Berry is double winner on World Nationals Night Two

By Joyce Eisele MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Sept. 16, 2023) – The Karl Auto Group Marshalltown Speedway held its Night Two of the World Nationals on Saturday for the Local UAW 893 Cliff Chambers Memorial Saturday Night Spectacular. Tom Berry Jr. doubled up and won both the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature and the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature. The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod feature went to Matt Avila and Adam Wasserman took the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock title. Blake Driscol took the honors in the Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compacts. The Stock Car feature became a runaway after Berry grabbed the lead at lap three. He never looked back and finished well ahead of second place and Friday winner Dallon Murty. Kaden Reynolds crossed in third place but was docked two positions for a deck height infraction, handing him a fifth place finish. This moved Damon Murty to third and opening laps leader Austin Kaplan to fourth. Champions crowned at RPM Speedway

By Sheldon Wickwar HAYS, Kan. (Sept. 16, 2023) – Track champions were crowned in five IMCA divisions Saturday evening at RPM Speedway. Tim Watts was scooting away with the lead while a four-wide battle broke out early for second in the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified main. Brett Smith took charge after a restart but Clay Sellard quickly found his way to the front. Point leader Dylan Sherfick was part of a three-car tangle and went to the pits for the rest of the night before Sellard brought the field to a restart with 12 laps to go. Dakota Sproul found some speed on the top side off the restart and started to close the gap behind the leader. The field would single file out in the closing laps, as Sellard was able to pull away from runner-up Sproul to grab the win. Daniel Gottschalk, Jake Nightingale and Brett Smith rounded out the top five. Despite getting caught up in an early wreck, Sherfick held good points lead to pick up the track championship.
