Cordes tops Hawkeye Dirt Tour finale, Brown earns IMCA Modified series title

FARLEY, Iowa (Sept. 19) – A season that’s seen its share of highs and lows saw another high spot Saturday for Troy Cordes. Cordes topped the 30-lap Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds during the Yankee Dirt Track Classic at Farley Speedway. The win paid $2,000 and put him on the ballot for next September’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I’d started second but fell back to about fifth. The car was too tight at the beginning,” he said. “The track was slick, which was unbelievable for the amount of rain they’d had.” Cordes got back to third following a lap 18 restart, then passed Jason Schueller and Kyle Brown for the lead and eventual checkers. Brown hung on to the runner-up position and became the sixth different driver to win the tour title in as many years the series has been held. 2015 IMCA point season ends Sunday, Sept. 27

VINTON, Iowa – The 2015 IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season for seven sanctioned divisions ends this Sunday, Sept. 27. Final races are scheduled that day for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Cars, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Mach-1 Sport Compacts. Bonus points for applicable track and/or special series championships will be figured and national champions and rookies of the year announced as soon as possible. Local track officials will have until noon Central Standard Time on Monday, Oct. 26 to notify IMCA of corrections that affect their top 15 point standings before all standings for those divisions become official. Late Model point standings become official at noon CST on Monday, Sept. 28. Aikey tops Yankee, Kay repeats as Deery Series champion

FARLEY, Iowa (Sept. 19) – Jeff Aikey and Justin Kay both posted second straight wins Saturday at Farley Speedway’s Yankee Dirt Track Classic. Aikey backed up his IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s victory with a convincing run to the $7,500 checkers ahead of Nick Marolf in the 100-lap Deery Brothers Summer Series main event. Kay finished third and cemented his second consecutive IMCA Late Model tour championship. Scott Fitzpatrick led the first 10 times around the oval before the fourth starting Aikey took charge. Marolf was able to make up ground as Aikey worked his way patiently through lapped traffic, but was never able to catch the leader. “I tried to keep the car as straight as I could and didn’t slide the tires. Melton gets first career, SST wins at Mountain Creek

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Sept. 18) – She’s racked up a lot of seconds and a lot of thirds in her three-plus IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car seasons. Michelle Melton now has her career first win in the class to brag about following the Friday night Sprint Series of Texas show at Mountain Creek Speedway. Melton passed Russell Shoulders for the lead coming out of turn two on the 19th of 20 laps. “It was awesome. I was ecstatic,” said Melton, who gave the trophy to her dad to put on display in their race shop. Making just her fourth SST start, Melton took the initial green flag from the 11th spot and steadily worked her way toward the front. She passed Kenny Elwood for second after a caution with three laps left. “I had to keep my line and stay on the bottom. Feature winner Harris honors veterans on VFW Night

(Sept. 19) – After taking the checkers on VFW Night at Eastside Speedway, Virginia Sprint Series feature winner Jerald Harris first thanked those who’d served the red, white and blue. Anthony Linkenhoker and Bill Rice had paced the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car field to green for the feature with Linkenhoker out first and Rice right behind with Glenn Worrell third. On lap three, Worrell went low and into second with Harris working his way up as well. Worrell shadowed Linkenhoker until lap seven went he again used his low move and took the lead. Harris moved to second two laps later. Harris closed on Worrell with 10 laps to go and the two went at it for two circuits before Harris used the middle groove to go for the lead where he stayed for his fifth win of the year. Super Nationals engine auction adds $15,300 to Saturday’s main event purse

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 12) – The public auction of Saturday champions’ motors added $15,300 to the purse for the final night main events at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. The engine of Modified champion Kyle Strickler brought the top bid of $5,500 during the auction, conducted in the infield at Boone Speedway following the evening’s race program. The other 32 starters in the Modified main each receive an equal share of those proceeds, $171.88. Stock Car champion Dustin Larson’s motor sold for $5,400, Northern SportMod champion Clint Luellen’s for $2,300 and Hobby Stock champion Jason Wilkinson’s for $2,100. Each of the other 29 starters on the Stock Car main will receive an additional $186.21, each additional Northern SportMod starter $79.31 and each additional Hobby Stock starter $72.41. Checks have been mailed from the IMCA home office. As part of generous contingency awards packages, Strickler, Luellen and Wilkinson all receive crate engines from Karl Chevrolet. Larson gets a new power plant courtesy of Karl Performance.

Farley’s Friday Yankee Dirt Track Classic program falls to rain

FARLEY, Iowa (Sept. 18) – Rain is the winner tonight at Farley Speedway. The evening’s Yankee Dirt Track Classic program, which was to have been headlined by the Deery Brothers Summer Series, has been canceled due to rain and wet track conditions. The complete Saturday program is still on as scheduled along with the addition of Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod qualifying. Hot laps are at 4:30 p.m. with racing to follow. Touring IMCA Late Models will chase checks of $7,500 to win and a minimum of $500 to start their 100-lap series finale tomorrow night while the Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds pays $2,000 to win and a minimum of $175 to start. Justin Kay of Wheatland clinches a second consecutive Deery Series crown with tonight’s rainout. Just four points separate Kyle Brown of State Center and defending champion Mike Van Genderen in the race for the 2015 Hawkeye Dirt Tour title.

Strickler joins elite club with Super Nationals championship repeat

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 12) – Kyle Strickler wrote his name in the record book again Saturday night, at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Strickler became just the third Modified driver to win back-to-back Super Nationals titles, dicing his way back to the front following a couple late restarts to take the checkers ahead of 2013 champion Dylan Smith and 19th starting Ricky Thornton Jr. at Boone Speedway. “I looked at the scoreboard and saw who was behind me. I was pretty sure where they were going to go,” said Strickler, who earned $3,300. “My heart sunk when I got up on the cushion and I saw three cars go by me but I was going to drive as hard as I needed to get the lead back.” Jordan Grabouski and Adam Larson completed the top five.
