Six new winners find victory lane at Kossuth County

By Greg Grabianowski  ALGONA, Iowa (June 24) – For the first five weeks at Kossuth County Speedway, a handful of drivers have dominated the six weekly divisions. That all changed as six different drivers found victory lane for the first time this summer at the track on Thursday, June 24.  The main attraction of the night was the $1,000 to win Wyffels Hybrid sponsored Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod special as Gerald Curry and Alex Smith brought the 17-car field to the flag stand.  Curry jumped out front early and kept his no. 32 rig out front with Austin Schrage lurking  two to three car lengths behind but seemingly could get no closer. Every time Schrage inched a little tighter, Curry increased his lead the next lap and went onto to claim the first place prize money in the biggest win of his racing career.  Schrage held on the runner-up slot as Alec Fett was third, Matt Looft was fourth and Smith rounded out the five cars. Izac Mallicoat earned an extra $200 as the hard [Read More]

Bard is bullish in PASS win at Path Valley

By Frank Buhrman SPRING RUN, Pa. (June 26) – It’s not that Garrett Bard doesn’t race well at Path Valley Speedway. In his last seven starts there, he had finished second four times, third once and fourth once.  But his only previous win in a full-sized sprint car had come in September of 2019, and since then he had won 14 Pennsylvania Sprint Series features, plus non-PASS victories, at other tracks.  That picture got brighter Saturday night when Bard emerged from a furious three-way battle to win the 25-lap IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car feature at the quarter-mile Spring Run bullring.  Bard was swapping the lead in traffic with hard-luck Kenny Heffner, with Jared Zionkowski looking for an opening, when Heffner dove to the inside on lap 23 and spun. Freed of traffic after the ensuing caution, Bard held off Zionkowski for the win, his second of the season. Zionkowski held on for the runner-up finish, .895 seconds behind Bard but ahead of Steve Kenawell, prior Path Valley winner Mikell McGee and John Walp. The PASS [Read More]

Becerra roars to East Moline Mix Memorial cash

By Rob Hinckley  EAST MOLINE, Ill. (June 27) – Lap after lap, Austin Becerra did not change his strategy and knew he would not. The Carthage, Ill., ace went to the top groove and stayed there the entire 20 laps of the Mike Mix Memorial SportMod Shootout Sunday evening at East Moline Speedway. Becerra wheeled around Cody Calam and Adam Birck, then held off Jarett Franzen for the $1,000 Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod win. “The track had some character and you have to (be able to) run the top like that,” Becerra said in the Winner’s Circle. “I’m not a bottom feeder so I had to make the top work.” Becerra waited out a couple cautions, but always pulled away from the field. Franzen, Birck, Nathan Balensiefen and Logan Veloz rounded out the top five. “Franzen is the class of the field here and I saw his nose under me a couple times. I knew running the top I could have the momentum.”  Not to be overshadowed, Hall of Famer Gary Webb put on a [Read More]

Smith too tough in Class Too Tough Too Tame at Boone

By Joyce Eisele BOONE, Iowa (June 26) – David Smith was too tough to catch in The Class Too Tough To Tame Saturday night at Boone Speedway. The IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars rolled out for their 20-lap feature and polesitter Mike House was the early race leader, holding on until halfway when the 14th starting Smith took over. A couple of late race cautions were no bother to Smith as he kept his lead to the checkers and sealed the win. Brother Donavon Smith started 10th and took second and Mathew West was third. Bryan Zehm led all 15 laps of the IMCA STARS Mod Lite race. It was an epic battle behind him however, as Josh May, Randy Bryan, and Mike Kennedy duked it out. Following the leader across the line at the checkers, it was May in the runner-up spot and Kennedy took third. Tom Lathrop grabbed the lead for the start of the 18-lap Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod feature and was looking strong, still leading at lap 13. However, by that time Johnathon Logue had moved through the pack [Read More]

Magee breaks through, Schroeder wins fourth at Wagner

WAGNER, S.D. (June 25) – On an evening that had threats of rain, week eight of the Fort Randall Casino Weekly Racing Series at Wagner Speedway took the green flag Friday night with a mission:  Let’s get this show in! Mission accomplished. The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock main event led off the show and to say that Joel Magee has waited a long time for a win would be the understatement of the year. Magee has a home in Florida and commutes to and from the region multiple times during the summer by air to race at IMCA tracks in the area.   Magee was a five-time champion at Raceway Park at Jefferson, SD and a two-time champion at Park Jefferson International Speedway, also at Jefferson. Following his last win in 1999 at the now defunct Blackbird Bend Speedway outside of Onawa, Iowa, he retired. Recently, Raceway Park placed a replica of Magee’s no. 9 Hobby Stock on top of the entrance sign and a group of his friends, after seeing that car, talked Magee into racing [Read More]

By Morgan Colegrove MONROETON, Pa.
