NY-Penn IMCA Modified Series kicking off with Sean Lias Memorial

By Evan Canfield  SUSQUEHANNA, Pa. – After a long off-season and months of planning, the newly-formed NY-Penn IMCA Modified Series is ready to set sail on the 2021 season. With a full schedule set to see eight events at five different tracks, drivers are eager to begin the inaugural season of the series. With nearly 30 cars registered for the year, large car counts and great racing are on the horizon for a big year. Kicking off this year’s campaign will be one of the biggest races of the season, the Sean Lias Memorial at Susquehanna, Pa.’s Penn Can Speedway slated for May 30. This event will pay homage to one of Pennsylvania’s own who was a multi-time champion across tracks and the Northeast region under the IMCA sanction in the 1990’s and 2000’s, scoring 231 feature wins in his career. The race will be 37 laps in honor of Lias’ car number that he was famously known for throughout the years. In that spirit, the race will pay a hefty $1,037 to the winner, [Read More]

Reaction from family, crew best part of Holloway’s win

SHERIDAN, Ark. – Getting her first IMCA Modified feature win was priceless. The reaction from her family and crew was even better. Madison Holloway led all 25 times around the track in winning the May 8 main event at Diamond Park Speedway, winning not only for the first time in her career but in her first start of the 2021 season. “It was kind of surreal,” said Holloway, who will start her final year in the pediatric nursing program at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway this fall. “I was pumped, but it wasn’t until my family and crew got to my car and seeing their faces when it all kicked in. That was the best part for me.” She’d drawn the fourth starting spot and stayed in front through “seven or eight” re-starts before taking the much anticipated checkers. “I just told myself to stay calm and hit my marks,” Holloway said. “I knew I had the car to win. It was a matter of keeping my mistakes to a minimum, hitting my [Read More]

Family time in victory lane as young star Lewis is first-time IMCA Mod Lite winner

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – When Cade Lewis won his career-first IMCA STARS Mod Lite feature, his father Colby enjoyed seeing the checkers fly from one of the best seats in the house … behind him on the track at Bakersfield Speedway. Cade, just 14 but already a 10-year racing veteran, topped the May 8 main event at Bakersfield. Colby, a former Major League pitcher with considerably more experience on the mound than on the dirt, was more than happy to end the night with a mid-pack finish. “It was pretty cool. This win proves I’ve come a long way and am still on the path to go up,” said Cade, who graduates this week from the eighth grade at St. John’s Lutheran School in Bakersfield. “It meant a lot for me to win and it meant a lot for my dad to be there with me in victory lane. He supports me in what I do and it’s cool to beat him on the track.” He’s progressed from go-karts and will see much of the country [Read More]

Texas Sprint Series checkers fly at Kennedale for Wilson

By Derrike Pennington KENNEDALE, Texas (May 15) – Chad Wilson got the job done Saturday at Kennedale Speedway Park, holding off Zane Lawrence for his first Texas Sprint Series win of the season. Wilson raced to first from fifth starting, taking the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car checkers ahead of Lawrence and Landon Thompson in a season-best third.  Christian Kinnison had the opportunity to start the feature from the pole after the redraw but decided to take the All Import Auto Parts Challenge, putting him to the rear of the field for a chance to win an extra $500.  With Christian relinquishing the pole position for the challenge, Casey Merrell inherited the spot to line up alongside teammate Thompson, With a strong start, Merrell looked to be on his way to a victory until a mid-race caution flew and once back to green he faded to ninth after suffering a tire issue.  Tire issues also plagued Kinnison, who saw his bid for the added money disappear with tire issues of his own and ended up coming [Read More]

Hendershot gets first PASS win in 71st career start

By Frank Buhrman SPRING RUN, Pa. (May 15) – Donnie Hendershot made Pennsylvania Sprint Series career race number 71 extra special Saturday night, earning victory number one in the 25-lap feature at Path Valley Speedway. Hendershot, who began racing with PASS in 2013, had a pair of runner-up finishes on his resume but had only run four times in each of the past two seasons and hadn’t scored a top five IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car finish since late 2018. Still, when the opportunity presented, he knew exactly what to do.  After finishing second in his heat race, Hendershot drew the outside second row for the feature. Outside front row starter John Walp darted into the lead but spun in the first turn. That moved Hendershot up to the front row. The red flag had come out for the double mishap of Walp’s spin and a collision between Alyssa Rowe and Tyler Cochran as the field came to a halt. When the race finally got underway for the second start, Hendershot outpaced Austin Reed and grabbed [Read More]
