Virginia Sprint Series win at Shenandoah goes to Leraas

By Jim Haines  SHENANDOAH, Va. (July 18) – On the hot, humid, summer day, the real heat was on the track as Mike Leraas won his first Virginia Sprint Series race of the season by a few feet. Saturday’s feature-only pavement show for IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars at Shenandoah Speedway had Chris Ware and Leraas pace the field to green with Leraas out first and Jerald Harris on his bumper. Bill Rice raced with Ware to get third as the front two were already hard at it for the top spot lap. Rice got by Ware as Billy Hubbard was all over Rice for third. Lap after lap, Harris got in the turns better but Leraas was better on the exit and they were never more than a few feet apart. Hubbard got by Rice for third with a few laps to go. Harris edged closer as the white flag waved and set up a dash for the finish. With the checkered flag in the air, Harris moved high to the outside and put on [Read More]

Frye scores PASS first feature win at Trail-Way

By Frank Buhrman & Stephanie Dodson  HANOVER, Pa. (July 17) – Jake Frye might wish the Pennsylvania Sprint Series ran at Trail-Way Speedway more often. A year ago to the weekend, the Lewisberry racer, still one of PASS’ youngest, equaled his best career finish – second place – when the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car series stopped at the Hanover oval.  Friday night, he topped that. Frye scored win number one in the 25-lap feature, in his 42nd career PASS start. He’d taken the top spot when early race-leader Larry McVay and third-place Johnny Scarborough were penalized for clipping the restart cone following a lap eight caution, putting Frye in the lead over Doug Dodson. That’s how they stayed, as Frye handled lapped traffic with ease, while Dodson blew a brake line on lap 13, handicapping his effort. He was still able to hang on for his third straight runner-up finish.  Scarborough came home in third, with front-row starters Jaremi Hanson and McVay taking fourth and fifth. Feature results – 1. Jake Frye; 2. Doug Dodson; 3. [Read More]

Roebuck leads most important lap at Off Road

By Randy Pospishil sports@norfolkdailynews.com NORFOLK, Neb. (July 18) – James Roebuck, despite being the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod division leader in laps led at Off Road Speedway this season, won his first local feature this season and led every lap of the 20-lap event in the process. Last week, Roebuck had the lead most of the way until a tire issue sidelined him. A change in his approach helped the Genoa driver garner three wins on consecutive nights, the third being Saturday’s in Norfolk. “We’ve been struggling a little bit this year. We cut down a tire for the last couple laps last week, so that took us out for that night,” Roebuck said. “It seems like we’re pretty quick at the beginning, but we just need to finish the races. We’ve stumbled on a few issues the past few weeks. Tires were number one we were burning up our tires too quickly.”  “We had a win in Albion last night, and we won at Columbus on Thursday,” he said. “So we’ve got it dialed [Read More]

Dinsmore answers Summer Showdown questions

By J.M. Hallas PLEASANTON, Texas (July 18) – Greg Dinsmore answered all the questions in winning the Saturday Summer Showdown IMCA Modified feature at I-37 Speedway. The 20-lap feature saw Dinsmore getting to turn one first trailed by Ryan Doyon, A.J. Wernette, Talon Minten and Johnny Melancon alongside Logan Dinsmore. Following two early restarts, Doyon and Minten swapped the second spot before Minten powered around and closed on the leader.  Minten showed him his nose once with Dinsmore adjusting to a middle groove and holding the top spot. At halfway, Dinsmore was running up on traffic giving Doyon the chance to close a six-car advantage in the waning laps. Dinsmore, a former track champion, got through traffic and kept Doyon at bay in taking the win. Son Logan was fifth.   “Just so many emotions racing with my kids,” said Dinsmore “It’s something I have been waiting for, for so many years. So many emotions. In the race Friday night we had a fast car but caught a rut and broke an upper ‘A’ arm. We spent the day welding things I never thought I would even [Read More]

Doing double duty at Dodge City, Kaup captures Stock Car Shootout

By Lonnie Wheatley  DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 18) – Jeff Kaup has done his fair share of winning at Dodge City Raceway Park in recent years.  However, on Saturday night, the Woodward, Okla., racer did it for the first time in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car Ranks by taking the $1,000 winner’s share in a hard-fought Stock Car Shootout presented by Winner’s Circle Feedyards and Factory Direct Fireworks atop the 3/8-mile DCRP clay oval. Kaup has accumulated 20 feature wins while earning six IMCA SportMod championships over the past seven years at Dodge City.  This year, Kaup is pulling double-duty in both the SportMods and Stock Cars.  And with the big money on the line Saturday evening, Kaup emerged from a wild battle to ultimately take the win in the 25-lapper. With several contenders running afoul of misfortune throughout the first half of the race, it ultimately boiled down to a three-way battle between Chris Oliver, Shaylon Holloway and Kaup.  Oliver led much of the way while nursing a flattened left front tire until finally surrendering [Read More]

Shryock scores IMCA Modified feature win at Boone

By Joyce Eisele BOONE, Iowa (July 18) – Kelly Shryock stated in victory lane that it had been a long time coming to get a feature win at Boone Speedway, but at the end of Saturday’s 20-lap feature for IMCA Modifieds, that is just what he did.   Shryock had to fend off some tough competition close behind him much of the race as Randy Havlik, Paul Nagle and Collen Winebarger jousted for position. Nagle made the move around Randy Havlik in the closing laps as they finished second and third, respectively. Winebarger would take fourth place and fellow Oregonian Grey Ferrando took fifth. The 20-lap IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature was a nail biter right down to the final moments.  Devin Smith finally broke from the pack and began to catch up with frontrunners Justin Nehring and Jay Schmidt.  He did so with just a few laps remaining, and with the help of a lapped car on the final circuit, dove low and stuck it to sneak around both Nehring and Schmidt and beat both to the checkers. Third win for Bowers at U.S. 36

By Jacob Blair  OSBORN, Mo. – Steven Bowers Jr. motored to his third IMCA Modified win of the season at U.S. 36 Raceway Friday night.  Shayne Bailey jumped to the early lead and would pace the field. Before the first caution of the race on lap seven, Bailey had stretched the gap out comfortably, while Bowers and Chad Andersen started their journey through the field.  By halfway, both Bowers and Andersen had worked their way into the top five. While Andersen momentarily stalled out in the fifth position, Bowers charged up to second and began working different lines trying to find a way around Bailey. As Bowers made his move with five laps to go, the second and final caution of the race flew, keeping Bailey at the point. On the restart, Bailey earned some breathing room and looked well on his way to Westfall GMC Victory Lane. With two to go, though, Bowers found a little more speed on the cushion and worked around Bailey to pick up his third win of the year [Read More]
