Murty takes $1,000 win, Richards collects bounty, first career win

By Joyce Eisele MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (July 17) – The Chelsea Charger Damon Murty went home $1,000 richer when he took the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car checkers and Braden Richards took the bounty money in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks as well as getting his first career win Friday at Marshalltown Speedway. The featured race of the evening was the 20-lap event for Stock Cars. Veteran Robert Stofer led the opening laps but soon had a flying Murty coming fast on the topside, and running him down. On lap four, Murty took command, sailing to the lead. A caution at lap nine saw Stofer briefly take back the lead on the restart, only to have Murty come right back around and into the lead, keeping it to the checkers and the $1,000 payday. Dustin Vis took the runner up spot, Steve Meyer made a late race charge to finish third, Kenzie Ritter had a good run and finished fourth, and David Brandies came home in fifth. Mike Mullen masters IMCA Modified main at Outagamie

By Edward Anschutz SEYMOUR, Wis. (July 17) – Shawn Freilich jumped to the point of the IMCA Modified feature Friday at Outagamie Speedway. His reign up front didn’t last long as ‘Mighty’ Mike Mullen blasted to lead on lap four. Benji LaCrosse came to call midway through the contest as he worked into the runner-up position. LaCrosse closed in late but it was Mullen scoring the win. LaCrosse had to settle for second place pay, Josh Long took third, Marcus Yarie was fourth and Jerry Wilinski completed the top five. The contest went green to checkers. In Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod action, drama unfolded early as point leader Vince Engebregsten didn’t make the call for the starting lineup. Zachary Raab took the lead on lap four and never looked back, cruising to a dominating win. The win was Raab’s first-ever at the speedway. Cole Magnin, Tyler Sobiesczyk, Matt Radtke and Jeff Schmuhl rounded out the top five. Clint Malueg was victorious in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts.

Burns earns first career feature win

By Greg Grabianowski ALGONA, Iowa (July 16) – James Burns won his first career feature race to highlight an exciting night of dirt track racing at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday. The big night of racing drew another nice crowd count of 104 cars filling the pit area looking for a tune up for the upcoming Salute to Veterans show. Burns took the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature holding off a late challenge from Brandon Nielsen. The Algona driver was racing with a heavy heart as his grandmother had passed away earlier in the day and in a victory lane interview, dedicated the race to her. Jay Sidles grabbed the early lead before an early caution. The race resumed as Burns used the high side to get past Sidles on lap four. He built a comfortable lead only to see Nielsen closing fast, but Burns slammed the door to set off a wild celebration in victory lane with his first career victory. Tuesday’s Dirt Knights Tour show among events as Jackson Motorplex suspends remaining 2020 schedule

JACKSON, Minn. – Due to the state restrictions, limitations on crowds and lack of recent updates for outdoor venues in Minnesota, the Jackson Motorplex has decided to suspend all remaining events in 2020 effective immediately. Among the events affected is the Tuesday, July 21 Speed Shift TV Dirt Knights Tour for IMCA Modifieds. The 11th annual tour opens July 20 at Park Jefferson Speedway and is at Buena Vista Raceway on July 22. Monday’s main event at Jefferson, S.D., pays $1,500. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and racing follows 6:30 p.m. hot laps. And on Wednesday at Alta, Iowa, the feature pays $1,000 to win with gates opening at 5 p.m. and racing following 7 p.m. hot laps. Both tour events are 2020 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying events.

Family time on the track: Jorgensen, grandsons square off in IMCA Late Model main at Harlan

HARLAN, Iowa – When the checkers flew at the conclusion of the June 20 IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature at Shelby County Speedway, the happiest driver in the race was probably the guy who finished ninth. Veteran Dave Jorgensen of Elkhorn, Neb., turned laps with grandsons Robbie and A.J. for just the second time this season that evening – a third racing grandson, Jakes, was on a fishing trip that Father’s Day weekend – and there were smiles all around before and after the show. “Racing binds us together. I get to see them more so it’s time well spent,” said Jorgensen. ”When I’m 75 or 80 it will be fun to look back, and I’m sure they’ll feel the same way.” Jorgensen’s son Dave Jr. retired after winning a track championship of his own and now serves as crew chief for his dad and boys. Bowers becomes first to repeat at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (July 11) – Steven Bowers Jr. is known as one of the top IMCA Modified drivers in the Jet Racing Central Region. On Saturday night at the Quick-Quarter of Springfield Raceway, Bowers became the first repeat winner in six Bad Boy Mowers IMCA Modified events by taking the top spot from Trevor Drake following a lap nine restart. Bowers started the 20-lap feature from seventh and let the pack start to loosen up before making his charge. Drake had grabbed command on lap four and was trying to put distance between his 12d car and the rest of the field. The caution on lap nine bunched the field together again. Drake continued to ride the extreme top groove on the racy surface but Bowers was a rocket off the bottom side and grabbed the front spot coming off turn two and left the race for the runner-up. (July 11) – This time a year ago, Ken Duke already had five Pennsylvania Sprint Series wins and 10 top-five finishes, on his way to becoming the PASS and IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car national champion. On Saturday night, the effort to make 2020 memorable for the right reasons took a big step forward when the hometown racer took the 20-lap PASS feature at Selinsgrove Speedway. $250 Sunoco bonuses highlight features at three Nebraska venues this week

VINTON, Iowa – The paydays get even better this week for a trio of IMCA Sunoco Late Model feature winners. It begins Thursday evening at U.S. 30 Speedway in Columbus as the IMCA Late Model winner pockets an extra $250 courtesy of Sunoco Race Fuels. Friday night the bonus moves to Boone County Raceway in Albion. The final bonus of the weekend will be presented Saturday night at Off Road Speedway in Norfolk. Sunoco bonuses are being presented at IMCA Late Model sanctioned weekly tracks this year. Drivers are eligible for only one bonus during the 2020 racing season. If the feature winner is a previous Sunoco winner, the bonus moves to the next eligible position. 2020 winners have been Jeff Aikey at Independence Motor Speedway, Matt Ryan at 34 Raceway, Joel Callahan at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway, Eric Pollard at 300 Raceway, Justin Kay at Davenport Speedway and Dalton Simonsen at Marshalltown. IMCA will announce mid-week before the dates bonuses are to be awarded at each track.

Rookie rules IMCA Sport Compact feature at Arlington

ARLINGTON, Minn. (July 11) – Mach-1 Sport Compact rookie Brett McConnell was among the drivers making first appearances of the season in victory lane during Dan Grams Memorial Night Saturday at Arlington Raceway. McConnell led flag to flag. R.J. Esquedo worked through the field while racing side-by-side with Eric Stocker but had to settle for second. Neil Stevens was scored first every time around the track in the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car feature. Chad Schroeder was the third and final different IMCA Sunoco Stock Car leader and Eric Larson sailed to the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod checkers after gaining the lead on lap two. Clint Hatlestad and Cory Probst were repeat IMCA Modified and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock winners, respectively.

Martin returns to RPM to top Wheatshocker finale

HAYS, Kansas (July 12) – After running second on opening night, Jason Martin was first to the checkers on night two of the Wheatshocker Nationals at RPM Speedway. Martin’s POWRi United Rebel Sprint Series Presented by Mel Hambelton Ford Racing Sunday payday was $2,000. The 30-lap feature event saw Shane Sundquist and Taylor Velasquez setting the pace. Velasquez took off with the early lead with Sundquist and Martin following. Lapped traffic came into play on lap 12. Martin was able to use that to his advantage and hammer around Sundquist. On lap 20, Martin pedaled around Velasquez to claim the top spot. Martin, Velasquez and Sundquist made up the top three finishers. Jeremy Huish was fourth and Saturday winner Ty Williams rounded out the top five.
