Hanes leads every lap at US 36 

By Rick Staley OSBORN, Mo. (June 22) – A single caution delayed Nic Hanes’ flag to flag run at the front of the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod field Friday at US 36 Raceway. Hanes picked up the win while Randy Smith Jr. celebrating his anniversary, placed a solid second. Third went to hard charger Steven Clancy. The IMCA Modified feature was contested by drivers from four states and Kansas clipper Darren Fuqua went home with the winner’s trophy. Matt Richards led start to finish in the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car main and Mike Nichols topped the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars.

Wolla, Zenz are IMCA winners at Dacotah

MANDAN, N.D. (June 22) – A mid-race caution erased his big advantage but The Big Show couldn’t be caught Friday at Dacotah Speedway. Defending national champion Jason Wolla was the IMCA Modified feature winner at Mandan while Jer­emy Keller finished a season-best second. Tom Berry Jr.’s last-lap pass of Shawn Strand to net third. Craig Kastner made his second visit to victory lane at Mandan this season following the Mach-1 Sport Compact main event. Runner-up was Christopher Zenz.

Blurton wins first of 2018 with URSS In Colorado 

CALHAN, Colo. (June 23) – Zach Blurton won his first feature of the year with the United Rebel Sprint Series as he bested a 19-car field at El Paso County Raceway. Nick Haygood and Brian Herbert brought the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car field to the green with Herbert getting the jump on the initial start only to have it negated by a couple cars tangling in turn on. On the ensuing restart, Haygood jumped into the lead and held Herbert at bay for the first three laps before Herbert made his move to take over the number one spot. Herbert’s lead only lasted two laps before Haygood regained the front spot, only to get high a lap later, allowing Herbert back by and falling to sixth. In the meantime, the ninth starting Blurton was moving his way up through the field and was third by lap seven and took over second on lap nine. Leraas leads last half for Shenandoah Sprint win 

SHENANDOAH, Va. (June 23) – Mike Leraas made the most of his trip north to lead the last half of the race for his second Virginia Sprint Series feature win of the season Saturday at Shenan­doah Speedway. Bill Rice and Chris Ware paced the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car field to green. Rice jumped out front with Ware in tow while Leraas and Tony Harris worked on Ware for second. Rice tried to get away as Leraas gained second and Harris took over third. Leraas went low and to the front, leaving Rice to race with Harris, which took five laps until he went to second. Leraas was out front as Harris was trying to chase him down. Glenn Worrell went to third as Rice faded with steering trouble. Memorial services for Sam Hodges are Thursday 

EUNICE, N.M. – Sam Hodges will make his final visit to the winner’s circle at Cardinal Motor Speedway on Thursday night, June 28. Memorial services for the late track owner, promoter and IMCA driver begin at 8 p.m. that evening in the winner’s circle at the Eunice speedplant he helped build. “Sam loved dirt track racing and it showed in every facet of his participation, from a racer to a promoter and track owner,” said IMCA President Brett Root. “He will be missed by all of us at IMCA.” Survivors include his wife Jill; his daughters, Cari Coy and husband Matt of Eunice, and Casey Hodges of Eunice; his son Cody Hodges and fiancée Jessica of Eunice; grandchildren, Tanner Bill (Whip) Coy, Tyson Coy, and Ellie Sikes; his sister Lea Ann Lord and husband Mike of Seminole, Texas; nephews and great nieces. Celebration of life is July 6 for Ed Parker

MERCED, Calif. – Family and friends will celebrate the life of Merced Speedway owner and promoter Ed Parker on Friday, July 6, at the fairgrounds. Parker, 51, died unexpectedly on Tuesday morning. “His goal when he took charge at Merced was to make it a great track for racers and he was well on his way to achieving that,” said IMCA President Brett Root, noting increased car counts and grandstand numbers at Merced during Parker’s tenure. “Very few people in this industry had the passion for motorsports that Ed did, as a fan, driver, car owner and eventually as a promoter. Our sympathies go to his family and many friends.” Survivors include his wife Patricia, son Cody, who races in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod division, his father Moses Parker and sister Beth Pfau. Fettinger is fastest at Southern Oregon

By Don Martin II WHITE CITY, Ore. (June 16) – Making a nice comeback from an early race crash, Zach Fettinger scored the 25-lap IMCA Modified main event victory Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speed­way. Fettinger held off C.J. Putnam down the stretch for what would be his first win of the season de­spite restarting at the back of the field following the lap eight fracas. The frontrunners had come up on a slower car and while Andy Freeman got by, Mark Wauge and Fettinger both got caught up. Wauge suffered enough damage to end his race while Fettinger made a pit stop and was able to rejoin the back of the pack for the restart. Fettinger quickly found the fastest line and charged to the lead, and eventual win ahead of Put­nam and Albert Gill. Braxton Possinger was flawless in leading start to finish of the 20-lap feature for Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods.

URSS readies for Colorado return 

CALHAN, Colo. – After a huge weekend at the DCRP/URSS 305 Nationals in Dodge City, the Rebels will now set their sites on heading to the state of Colorado as they return this Saturday night to El Paso County Raceway in Calhan. A large contingent of drivers from Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma will converge on the ¼ mile D-shaped oval to meet up with a great field of cars from Colorado to vie for the $1,000 to win, minimum $200 to start feature. The last visit to the El Paso County Raceway was in 2014 when Jake Bubak topped a stellar field of 26 cars to take the victory and earn a $1,000 payday. A great contingent of Kansas cars will be headed to Colorado including Brian Herbert, Zach Blurton, Steven Richardson, Ryan Hill, Koby Walters, Aaron Ploussard, Chad Salem, Jed Werner and more of Kansas’s best drivers. Moyer scores Fan Appreciation Night win

By Jerry Mackey DUBUQUE, Iowa (June 17) – Sunday night racing action returned to the high-banked 3/8-mile dirt track on the Dubuque County Fairgrounds on Fan Appreciation Night.  The final feature of the night was the Merfeld Brothers Auto IMCA Modified event. Austin Moyer shot to the front from his second row start, immediately took to the high side of the track and went on fight off the constant challenges from Matt Gansen to score the win in the 20-lapper. Moyer took the checkers a couple of car lengths ahead of Gansen. Mark Schulte made a late-race charge to take third.  The Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature was in doubt right to the checkers as Jason Roth was able to overcome K.C. Ansel on the last corner of the 18-lap event and nip Ansel by a few feet for the win. Streaks continue during Heister Memorial

By Rob Hinckley MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 16) – The checkbooks may come out soon as many are seeing boun­ties on the horizon for a handful of drivers at Maquoketa Speedway. Daniel Wauters outran the hot weather and the competition to make it four straight checkered flags in the IMCA Hobby Sunoco Stocks Saturday evening during the Donna Heister Memorial. “What a night at Maquoketa Speedway,” Wauters said on Facebook. “Kids got plenty of ice cream from the Little Racers Car Club, got to ride around in the Batmobile, then we got our fourth straight feature win there.
