Last-lap pass nets Campbell top I-37 cash

By J.M. Hallas PLEASANTON, Texas (March 24) – To say Jamie Campbell’s road to the winner’s circle Saturday at I-37 Speedway was eventful might be an understatement. Campbell, who started eighth in the IMCA Modified feature, got clipped in a grinding lap three crash, taking some extensive body damage to the car. Then, while running third, he narrowly escaped contact with Talon Minten who spun directly in his path. That caution, the fifth of the night, saw officials call for a green, white, checkered finish on time limit. Race-long leader Dillon Tindall got a good restart, but Campbell quickly closed back in. On the white flag lap they were side by side going into turn three. Campbell used the momentum off the high line to edge out Tindall at the line by about a bumper to steal the win. “That was pretty cool,” Campbell said of his last-lap pass. “I’ve done it here before but it’s been a long time. It means a lot because I struggled so much last year with this car, especially [Read More]

Desert Thunder brings back IMCA Hobby Stocks

PRICE, Utah – Common sense and common rules bring IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks back to Desert Thunder Raceway. Sanctioned Hobbies ran at the Price, Utah 3/8-mile dirt oval from 2009-2012. They’ll return for four Friday-Saturday doubleheaders this season, joining IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Smiley’s Racing Products Southern SportMods. “We tried them for a while at a time when dirt track racing was expanding in Utah,” track owner and co-promoter Harvey Howard said. “Then some other people decided they could do things better with what I call outlaw rules.” “It’s taken a while but other people have figured out what we knew 10 years ago,” he continued. “We have done everything we can to move back and hope that now we’ve come full circle. It’s just common sense to go to a national sanction and not have to argue over rules.” Race dates for all IMCA divisions at Desert Thunder are April 13 and 14, April 27 and 28, May 11 and 12, and Sept. 28 and 29. “We had 21 Hobby Stocks [Read More]

Repeat winners are Saturday story at Canyon

By Tony Steele PEORIA, Ariz. (March 17) – Repeat winners were the story Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park. Jason Noll wasted no time following a Leading Edge IMCA Modified restart and made what proved to be the race-winning pass of Ryan Roath to the inside when the green flag flew. Chaz Baca had a strong run going until a misstep allowed Joey Moriarity to get by to the inside, putting both MRT Racecar teammates on the podium. For the first time in almost a full year the race fans at Canyon were treated to a full Allscapes IMCA Stock Car battle between Cody Center and George Fronsman. It seems between the two it’s been one of them having some type of mechanical problem over the last six or so races. At last, both cars held up to full strength and the fight raged on. Much of the race was led by Fronsman on the low side while Center continued to chip away on the cushion. Center finally got the run he needed to get by Fronsman [Read More]

Michigan’s Silver Bullet sanctions Modifieds with IMCA

OWENDALE, Mich. – The longest continuously operating dirt race track in Michigan is the latest to sanction its Modified division with IMCA. Silver Bullet Speedway at Owendale has scheduled 18 dates, 16 of them on Saturday nights, for the open-wheeled class. “I have always had it in the back of my mind that I would like to go with IMCA. Even though we’d been UMP, we’ve always had a good relationship with IMCA and the IMCA tracks in Michigan,” said promoter Matt Hoonhout, who along with his brother Nick purchased the former Owendale Speedway in 2013. “I really like what IMCA has to offer us, everything from apparel to rules to regional and national point funds.” Located in the thumb of the state some 20 minutes south of Caseville, a popular summertime tourist destination, the quarter-mile clay oval at Owendale opened in 1955 and saw the likes of A.J. Foyt and Parnelli Jones compete. Hoonhout raced in both the late model and modified divisions at Owendale. He piloted an IMCA ride in 2011 at Tri-City [Read More]

Tomlinson picks up Cotton Bowl opener

By J.M. Hallas PAIGE, Texas (March 10) – After scoring a Friday night win at Heart o’ Texas Speedway, Eric Tomlinson concluded a successful weekend by picking up the IMCA Modified feature win Saturday at Cotton Bowl Speedway. Tomlinson, who started mid-pack, found a line on the bottom that suited his set up and methodically worked his way to the front where Rob Slott and Jeff Hoegh had been battling for the lead. Tomlinson took control a little before halfway with Hoegh, Slott, Dalton Knox and Raymond McSpadden in the top five at the midway point. As the race wound down, Tomlinson built a lead while McSpadden was able to find the bottom to his liking, moving into the top three. At the checkers it was Tomlinson with the win. Brandon Blaylock was best of the bunch in the Smiley’s Racing Products Southern SportMods, going wire to wire for the win. Blaylock was chased throughout the 20-lapper by Mike Wagner. At the crossed flags it was Blaylock, Wagner, Jennings, Will Carter and Johnny Torres edging [Read More]

Noll, Madrid motor to Canyon feature wins

By Tony Steele PEORIA, Ariz. (March 10) – Jason Noll kicked off the Leading Edge IMCA Modified point season with a trip to victory lane while Speedy Madrid picked up another win in the Arizona Differential IMCA Northern SportMod season opener Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park. After finishing 1-2 in their heat race, Chaz Baca and Noll went to work during Modified feature event action. Baca started fifth and moved to the lead early after the first few circuits were paced by former track champion Guy Norton. Noll started back in the 10th position and found his way into second around the halfway mark. Noll had no yellow flags to aid his pursuit and was forced to chase down race leader Baca. With two laps to go, Noll set up Baca coming off turn four to dive to the inside of the leader in turn one. The pass was completed down the backstretch and Noll held on during the final circuit to take the win. Baca finished second with John Parmeley, Bubba Stafford and Guy Norton [Read More]

Grayson County adds IMCA Stock Cars to Saturday programs

BELLS, Texas (March 9) – IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars return to weekly race programs at the longest IMCA-sanctioned track in Texas this season. The full-bodied class joins IMCA Modifieds and Smiley’s Racing Products Southern SportMods on Saturday nights at Grayson County Speedway. “We had the I-Stocks here for one race last season and the fans loved them. We made the announcement late last year that we would sanction the division this year,” said promoter Mark Weiss. “What I personally like best about the class is that they keep the competition fair. No one has an advantage other than skill set. That’s what makes it exciting for the fans and what keeps the drivers coming back.” A business president in the Dallas metroplex, Weiss got his introduction to dirt track racing as a spectator at Grayson County. He helped sponsor a race car, traveling to various events across the South, before buying the track in December of 2016. “Grayson County was the shortest quarter-mile track I’d seen,” said Weiss. “The first thing we did was make [Read More]
