Zap zips to first Laurel Highlands checkers

(Aug. 20) – The story of the night had to have been the popular win of veteran Joe Zap, who led all 20 laps of the green to checkers main event when the Laurel Highlands IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars traveled to Hesston Five Star Speedway. Zap and Ron Aurand brought the field to green with Zap charging into the lead followed by Aurand, Greg Dobrosky and Scott Lutz with Reed Thompson and Drew Ritchey in hot pursuit. Aurand gave chase all the time as he stayed close to Zap but was not able to reel him in. Race number two of the racing weekend scheduled for Bedford Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 21 was canceled due to rain. Kansas Thunder Series crowns champions

By Mike Hughes STOCKTON, Kan. (Aug. 20)—The Kansas Thunder Series closed out the 2016 season at the series finale at Elmwood Park Speedway Saturday, crowning champions in its four divisions. The Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified series championship was up for grabs as Mike Petersilie and Clay Money were tied for the top spot. Don Geist jumped out to the lead in the main event with Tyler Frye right behind. Geist continued to lead at the halfway mark in the 15-lap race with Frye and Jesse Richter close behind.  Richter shot to the lead on lap nine but Frye got past on lap 12. Richter retook the top spot and held on for the win, followed closely by Frye and Geist. Petersilie finished fourth to give him the series championship. Brian Calhoon rounded out the top five. Bruening, Merfeld, Current score Dubuque wins

By Jerry Mackey DUBUQUE, Iowa (Aug. 21) – Ninety-eight cars packed Dubuque Speedway Sunday for an action-packed night of IMCA racing. A solid field of 19 drivers took the green flag in the IMCA Late Model 25-lapper, which saw Tyler Bruening shoot ahead from his front row start. Bruening was pressured by Luke Goedert before being able to pull out to a comfortable lead late in the main event. Bruening ran the momentum line at the top of the smooth track in scoring the win, which carried a $200 bonus courtesy of Cal Co Spray Coatings and Cedar Cross Service of Dubuque. Goedert fin­ished second ahead of Jeremiah Hurst. The Merfeld Brothers IMCA Modified feature was an outstanding race with several lead changes throughout the 20-lap event. First-time visitor to Dubuque Speedway Troy Jerovetz from Green Bay, Wis., advanced from a sixth row start to take the lead following a lap 15 restart. Luloff, Moss score wins on Fan Appreciation Night

By Jerry Mackey WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (Aug. 13) – Saturday night’s racing action at West Liberty Raceway fea­tured Fan Appreciation Night along with Kids’ Back To School Night. The huge crowd was treated to a great night of racing and the kids received Back To School Supplies and also had a $1,355 nickel scramble. Despite nearly seven inches of rain the last couple of days in the West Liberty area, the crew was able to provide the drivers with a great track and the drivers responded with providing an exciting night of wheel to wheel racing in all classes. The Performance Concepts IMCA Modifieds were the headline division with 24 cars in attend­ance. Jerry Luloff scored his second win of 2016 in topping a very strong field. Davenport Speedway cancels races

DAVENPORT, Iowa (Aug. 12) – Davenport Speedway has canceled the racing program scheduled for tonight (Friday) due to rain. Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Models, Eriksen’s IMCA Modifieds and the Hawkeye Auto IMCA Northern SportMods. Will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 19. The rainout also means that Kids’ Night and Mechanic Races originally scheduled Aug. 19 will be held on Season Championship Night  Aug. 26.

Kansas Thunder Series returns to Stockton 

By Mike Hughes STOCKTON, Kan. (Aug. 11) – The Kansas Thunder Series ½-mile Shootout returned to Rooks County Speedway in Stockton Thursday evening, as part of the Rooks County Fair. Two new faces appeared in victory lane, and two other made repeat appearances. Clay Money led from green to checkered in the 15-lap Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified fea­ture. Kaid Calhoon chased Money the entire race but finished second, trailed by Randy Wilson, Brian Calhoon and Tim Watts. The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature got off to a rough start as it took three attempts before the race finally got underway. Brady Bencken paced the first two laps before Colton Pfeifer took the lead. Pfeifer ran over debris on lap seven and had to pit to change a tire under caution, handing the lead back to Bencken. Rutkoski races to $1,000 payday at Flomaton 

FLOMATON, Ala. (Aug. 6) – Kyle Rutkoski’s continued Bay Area Emerald Coast Tour success has put him on the ballot for the 2017 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Rutkoski won Saturday’s Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature and $1,000 during the Jar­rod Johns Memorial program at Flomaton Speedway. Rain delayed the drop of the green. Once the main event got underway, Brandon Harris took the early lead as Josh Goodwin tried to reel him in. Rutkoski made his way to the front and set his sights on the big check. In the closing laps, Jason Barnhill tried every line to make up the distance was trying to catch Rutko­ski. Pattee’s first win comes at Independence’s 500th IMCA Modified main

By Bucky Doren INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (Aug. 6) – It was a double milestone night Saturday at Independence Motor Speedway. On the night the track celebrated its 500th IMCA Modified feature event, driver Tysus Pattee scored his first career win in that division. Despite his front row starting spot, Pattee had to work hard for his first career win. Three late cau­tion flags tightened the field behind him. Jenae Gustin, who also scored her first two career IMCA Modified wins at Indee, and Ronn Lauritzen tried to keep pace on those three restarts, but Pattee was able to pull away for the historic win. Gustin settled for second. Lauritzen drove from the 11th place starting spot to finish third. Ryan Mait­land finished fourth and Vern Jackson rounded out the top five. Osborn, Gottschalk among Lexington winners

LEXINGTON, Neb. (Aug. 7) – With limited time remaining in the regular season, every point matters that much more and the fierce competition showcased at Lexington Raceway on Sunday evening was evident of the neck-and-neck battles throughout the evening on the Dawson County Fairgrounds. Leading from the onset and never looking back was Colton Osborn as he put on a dominating performance to win the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature. Osborn piloted his hot rod to the lead on the first lap and led all 20 laps of the feature event. The laps that matter the most were led by Daniel Gottschalk in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature. Gottschalk led the final two laps to earn the feature victory.
