Thornton takes Bald Tire Bash checkers at Benton County Speedway

VINTON, Iowa (Aug. 13, 2023) – Dylan Thornton raced the top groove to a big payday in Sunday’s Bald Tire Bash at Benton County Speedway. The IMCA Sunoco Stock Car special, which required a tread depth of no greater than 5/32 of an inch on any tire, featured a 50-lap headliner at The Bullring that resulted in a $2,500 winner’s share for the Keystone driver. From a row two start, Thornton battled pole-sitter Leah Wroten early for the top spot in the Christie Door Company main event. Working the top side of the fast, smooth quarter-mile, Thornton assumed command just prior to a lap five caution. He maintained the point on the restart and built a five-plus second advantage by the time the race was slowed again just past midway. As Thornton led, Kyle Olson, Kaden Reynolds, Tom Berry Jr. and Dallon Murty pursued. Murty made his way into second before a stoppage that put him on Thornton’s rear bumper for a late restart. While pressuring Thornton with just two laps to go, Murty spun [Read More]

Carter takes $1,000 checkers at Marshalltown

By Joyce Eisele MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Aug. 11, 2023) – It was $1,000 to win for Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods at Marshalltown Speedway on Friday night, thanks to the BHE Night before the Creek special at the speedway’s sister track, 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wis. Brayton Carter went home $1,000 richer taking home that honor. Jarett Franzen led the opening lap of the race but by lap three, it was Sam Wieben leading the troops. Wieben was still leading when a caution flew at lap 12 but he had big-time company by now with a pair of Oskaloosa, Iowa drivers, Curtis Van Der Wal, and Carter on his tail.  When the race returned to green, Van Der Wal was able to get the advantage by going topside and took command of the race at lap 13. Another yellow would fly at lap 14 and this time it would be Carter getting the advantage on the restart and flying into the lead. It was all Carter’s race the rest of the way to the checkers, matching his win [Read More]

Lincoln, Bedford this Saturday and Sunday for PASS

By Frank Buhrman ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. (Aug. 11, 2023) – Two tracks with long but very different histories of River Valley Builders Pennsylvania Sprint Series competition make their only 2023 appearances on the schedule this weekend. Lincoln Speedway will be the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car teams’ destination Saturday night, and on Sunday night the action moves west to Bedford Fairgrounds Speedway, for a co-sanctioned event with the Laurel Highlands Sprint Series.  Both tracks hosted their first PASS race 20 years ago. Lincoln will run exactly 20 years and five weeks after its first appearance, and Bedford will host the sprinters two days shy of exactly 20 years since the first show. It needs to be noted, however, that Lincoln hosted the Virginia Sprint Series, the oldest of all RaceSaver regional groups, before its first PASS race. In the years since, Lincoln has been a regular on the PASS schedule, typically with either one or two races. Overall, this will be the 30th PASS race at the Pidgeon Hills track, and the victories have been well spread [Read More]

Rain interrupts Lee County’s Friday show

By Brian Neal DONNELLSON, Iowa (Friday, August 4, 2023) – Lee County Speedway beat Mother Nature early, then had to try to beat her again once the program got started on Friday night during the final qualifying round for the Iowa Corn Growers Association IMCA Sunoco Late Model Drive For 5. Before Mother Nature cut the program short, two and more than half of another feature were completed, with all three drivers familiar to victory lane. First to take to the track was the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature, with Kevin Koontz and Peter Stodgel scheduled to be on the front row. But when Stodgel had to be pushed from staging, Chad Krogmeier moved to the outside of the front row for the start. Krogmeier took advantage of this to jump out into the lead over Jeremy Pundt and John Oliver Jr., who started eighth. On lap five, Oliver got past Pundt for the runner-up spot and then went to work on the leader. Krogmeier was able to hold off those challenges until lap 16, when Oliver [Read More]
