Dinsmore is spot on at Cotton Bowl

Hallas PAIGE, Texas (April, 9) – Greg Dinsmore chased down Brian Walker, used the middle groove to get for the lead near halfway and then eased away in the final laps for the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified win Saturday at Cotton Bowl Speedway. “The car was spot on tonight,” said Dinsmore. “There’s always great competition here at Cotton Bowl. The track is always racy and gets the show over in a timely manner. I knew I had to get to do something to get to the front early.” J.J. Jennings went wire to wire in the Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMod main. Once out front, Jennings put it on cruise control until challenged after a late caution by Earl Ingram and Robert Scrivner in the final laps. Regular season kicks off at RPM

By Mike Hughes HAYS, Kan. (April 9) – After a very successful Sunflower Classic two weeks ago, the regular points season got underway at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Saturday evening, April 9. The NAPA Auto Parts/Gib’s Auto Supply IMCA Modified feature had the wildest finish of the night. Danny Morrison led the opening lap before Dylan Sherfick took the lead. Sherfick appeared to have the race well in hand until a caution on the final lap for a spinning car set up a one-lap shootout to the finish. Sherfick led the field back to green, trailed by Morrison and Tyler Frye. As the field headed into turn two on the final lap, Frye shot around Morrison for second, dove under Sherfick in turns three and four and made it stick, then held on to the checkers by a car length. Morrison was third, followed by Clay Money and Steven Bowers Jr. Chad Sterling was the Advantage Glass Plus IMCA Stock Car winner. Cottage Grove Speedway opens with 60th anniversary event

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. – Saturday, April 9, would be the first race of the 2016 race season at Cottage Grove Speedway. It also opened up the 60th anniversary of racing at the historical ¼-mile clay oval. Not only would the pit area swell with a huge car count it would be complimented with jam-packed grandstands full of fans anticipating the first race of the year in the state of Oregon and Collen Winebarger made history as the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event winner. The Modifieds attracted 24 teams for the first race of the campaign and Winebarger got out to the front on the initial start. The feature was slowed by numerous cautions so restarts were key. Winebarger got the job done and led every lap. Kinzer Cox finished second, followed by Craig Hanson, B.J. Wild and John Campos.

Traugott stampedes to Dodge City checkers

(April 9) – Cole Traugott emerged atop a hard-fought 30-lap Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature event to take the $1,200 winner’s share in Saturday’s fourth annual Modified Stampede at Dodge City Raceway Park. The Modified Stampede lived up to all the hype and then some, with the new Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier escaping contact with past IMCA national champion David Murray Jr. and then recapturing the lead from Nick Link in the closing circuits to capture his first Dodge City win since June of last year. “It got a little rougher than I had hoped for, but a win is a win,” Traugott commented. Defending series champion takes Bay Area Tour win at Baker

BAKER, Fla. (April 2) – Jason Barnhill had to feel good about the finish of Saturday’s Bay Area Emerald Coast Tour main event at Northwest Florida Speedway, as a driver as well as a car owner. The defending Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified series champion passed teammate Jamie Brooks, who was also driving a Barnhill-owned ride, on the fifth lap and led to the finish of the caution-slowed feature at Baker. Brooks had started inside Barnhill on the front row and surrendered the front spot in traffic. Greg Hopkins pressured Barnhill the last two circuits before getting too high on the final turn and falling out of contention. “We had a good side-by-side race the last few laps,” Barnhill said. “I’d broke leading my last timeout so it was nice to win this one.” Thumper Grice, Jimmy McDaniel and Hopkins completed the top five. Hogan Memorial will be July 3 at Benton County Speedway

VINTON, Iowa – The 22nd annual Hogan Memorial will be held Sunday, July 3 at Benton County Speedway. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds headline the holiday weekend special in Vinton. The Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot-qualifying feature pays a minimum of $1,250 to win, with lap money, a halfway leader bonus and hard charger awards making for a potential payday of more than $4,000. Two hundred and fifty dollars will be paid to take the green and Modified heat winners earn $100. All regular weekly divisions will be on the program. Modifieds will run for all applicable points except local track points at the draw/redraw show. Grandstand admission will be $12 for adults and $5 for kids ages 6-12, with five and under admitted free. Pit passes are $25. Gates open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6 p.m. and racing to follow. First track points awarded this week at Osky, Donnellson

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – First weekly points races of the 2016 season are on the ticket Wednesday, April 6 at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa and Friday, April 8 at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified, IMCA Sunoco Stock Car, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod and Mach-1 Sport Compact drivers get free admission and there is no entry fee for the lidlifter at Osky. Hot laps are at 7 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m. Drivers in the sanctioned Modified, Stock Car, Northern SportMod and Sport Compact divisions get in for half-price at Donnellson. Hot laps are at 6:45 p.m. and racing is at 7:30 p.m. NSL 360 Sprint Cars and Lee County late models also run Friday night. First night for IMCA Hobby Stock track points at Lee County is April 15.

Humphries takes checkers in Virginia Sprint Series opener

(April 2) – On a windy and cold Saturday night, the Virginia Sprint Series kicked off at Shenandoah Speedway and the cat and mouse chase between Tom Humphries and Jerald Harris continued. Humphries topped the trophy dash, then came out on top of the main event for IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Cars. Charlie Ware and Tony Harris paced the feature field to green with Harris out first and Humphries and Jerald Harris right behind. The leader bobbled on lap two and Humphries shot to the front, leaving the Harris brothers to fight over second. Jerald got by on lap eight and set off after Humphries for the last half of the race. Norton takes IMCA Modified honors at Canyon

(April 2) – Guy Norton stole the spotlight by racing to victory lane in Saturday night’s 25-lap IMCA Modified main event atop the 1/3-mile Canyon Speedway Park clay oval. Norton battled from the fourth starting position for his first Arizona Differential IMCA Modified win of the season ahead of 10th starting Jay Foster, Mike Strobl, 12th starting Bryson Curry and new track points leader Zack Madrid.

Gearhart squeezes by for late win at Dodge City

(April 2) – Cody Gearhart squeezed by race-long leader Beau Davis on the 17th circuit to capture his first local Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified victory since June of 2013, on opening night at Dodge City Raceway Park. “That really was a tale of two races,” Gearhart said in victory lane after the 20-lapper. “I was getting passed at one point, then things all worked out.” Gearhart spent the early portion of the race chasing Davis, who gunned into the lead from the front row outside. Gearhart briefly fell back a spot when William Nusser battled by to claim second at the midway point. Nusser looped it the next time around in turn four, collecting fourth-runner Cole Traugott in the process. Back up to second, Gearhart kept the pressure on Davis and capitalized when the leader bobbled in turns thee and four on the 16th lap.
