Hake picks up first career win in PASS opener

SPRING RUN, Pa. (March 26) – Andrew Hake ran an excellent race Saturday night, picking up the Pennsylvania Sprint Series season opener at Path Valley Speedway Park in a 10-year-old car with a motor his dad built. It was Hake’s career first IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Car victory. Hake took the early lead and survived numerous caution flags, holding off some strong contenders. Mark Watkins, who has won numerous races at Path Valley, and Zach Newlin, the 2015 PASS champ were close behind. Watkins got a look under Hake on several occasions but Hake never faltered and Watkins was forced to settle for second. Dale Schweikart made it interesting with yet another good run at Path Valley closing in on the leaders in the final laps and pulling into contention in the final laps for third. Dave Brown came from deep in the field to finish fourth while Newlin held on for a fifth place finish. Twenty-one cars were on hand for the chilly season opener and the extensive work on the speedway over the [Read More]

Ashley figures out Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods

By Ben Deatherage JASPER, Ore. – When it comes to the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods in 2015, Gene Ashley seemed to have the IMCA division all figured out. The veteran racer out of Jasper collected his first career championship in the class at Cottage Grove Speedway. “The biggest thing is, I couldn’t have done this without Eric (his youngest son),” commented Ashley. “He put this car together for me and when I blew my motor in the middle of the year he gave me his so I could finish it out.” Ashley’s driving career started at the young age of 16 in 1970, running demolition derbies at the now-defunct Eugene Speedway, before eventually venturing to CGS in the mid-1970s. He finished as runner-up a few times but never won a title until the age of 61. “I’ve really enjoyed racing but what I think I love the most is watching my kids (Ricky and Eric) race,” he continued, “and to actually race against them over the years, I thought that would never happen.” Ashley collected [Read More]

More paperwork needed for minor drivers in IMCA

VINTON, Iowa – Drivers under the age of 18 in all sanctioned divisions are required by IMCA to submit paperwork in addition to their competitor’s application. No exceptions are granted. All drivers ages 14-17 must send a notarized release form, signed by both parents/guardians, and a copy of their birth certificate. There’s also a $50 minor fee, additional to the price of the license, that must be paid when the license is purchased. Release forms are available by contacting IMCA. Drivers 14 and 15 years old are also required to send information about their previous racing experience, if any, and what tracks they will compete at during the upcoming season. License applications and other paperwork should be sent in to the IMCA home office as soon as possible before the minor begins racing. “Failure to get the release form notarized is the biggest issue we have with minor paperwork,” noted IMCA Director of Membership and Points Virginia Lindsey. “It’s extremely important for parents and guardians to realize that until we receive all required paperwork, minor [Read More]

‘Old-school IMCA guy’ named Michigan state tech inspector

ORLEANS, Mich. – A self-described “old-school IMCA guy” is IMCA’s new state tech inspector for Michigan. Terry Williams will alternate Fridays working with tech inspection crews at Tri-City Motor Speedway and newly re-sanctioned I-96 Speedway. He’ll be on the job Saturdays at Crystal Motor Speedway, where he’s teched since 2004. “This is my 25th year associated with IMCA and I’ve loved every minute of it,” said Williams, who raced at both I-96 and Crystal during his own career. “I raced an IMCA Modified for seven years until 1998 and began working the next year at I-96.” “(Promoter) Ron Flinn at Crystal asked me to fill in and finish out the season for him in 2004 and I’ve been there ever since,” he continued. “Ron and I hit it off and I stayed. I think we get along so well because we’re both old-school IMCA.” Williams will be the second state inspector hired by IMCA. Jay Flaig has that title in Wisconsin. Already acquainted with tech crews at all three tracks – he helped at Tri-City’s Battle [Read More]

No question about it, latest Cardinal track title puts Flowers in fast IMCA company

HOBBS, N.M. – Neal Flowers isn’t just good at the game of Cardinal Speedway track championship trivia. He’s the answer to a lot of the questions. Flowers won his career 10th Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified track title at the Eunice, N.M., speedplant in 2015. He’s the latest in just a handful of IMCA drivers to earn double-digit crowns, in one or multiple divisions, at the same track. “I’m sure winning the first one was tough but winning the last one was harder,” said Flowers, from Hobbs and a month removed from his 48th birthday. “Winning track championships gets tougher every year but it’s more satisfying knowing you can still do it. We’ve got a lot of young guys around here and they’re good drivers.” Flowers’ family owned the Lea County Speedbowl in Hobbs. He’s raced in one division or another every season but one since 1985, starting in a local street stock class at Roadrunner Speedway and buying his first Modified in the early 1990s. “They were really just getting started in this area and four [Read More]
