New promotional era begins at Skyline Raceway Park

CORTLAND, N.Y. – One era has ended and another begun at Skyline Raceway Park. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds return to Saturday night programs beginning April 23. The IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing point season at Cortland runs through Turbo Blue championship night on Sept. 17. The former Skyline Raceway has been IMCA sanctioned longer than any other track in New York and will crown a Modified champion for the 20th consecutive season in 2016. “This division is a lot different than most of the other cars around here,” Catlin noted. “They run on those narrow Hoosier tires and there’s a lot of talent needed to hook them up. The guys who can do that are doing a whale of a job.” Catlin raced at Skyline the third week after the Paynes began promoting. He was a weekly regular there for 15 years and won the local pure [Read More]

Kathy Root honored with RPM achievement award

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 16) – The automotive racing world recognized one of its most accomplished members. Kathy Root, retired owner and president of IMCA and now chair of the sanctioning body’s executive committee received an achievement award, citing her dedication to short track auto racing, during the Racing Promotion Monthly workshops in Daytona Beach, Fla. “I enjoyed watching the growth of IMCA and knowing we were having a favorable impact on the racing industry,” said Root, the first full-time employee hired by Keith Knaack nearly 40 years ago. “I think Keith’s original goal when he developed the Modified was to keep racing an affordable hobby and we’ve always done our best to keep it that way.” “I’ve also enjoyed the friendships I’ve made and the people I’ve met,” she added. “There’s been a good bit of that.” Named president in 1990, Root guided IMCA through a sustained period of growth that continues into the organization’s 101st season. IMCA veteran Munoz takes promotional reins at Lamar

LAMAR, Colo. – Angel Munoz has had his hands full doing more than getting his own car ready for the new season. He’s got an entire race track to run in 2016. A veteran of four IMCA divisions, Munoz is the new promoter at his hometown Lamar Speedway. It’s a role he never envisioned for himself but one he took on to help ensure the 1/3-mile clay venue stayed viable for a new generation of drivers. “Being a racer, there are times when you get upset at a promoter and think you could do it, too,” he said. “Between running my little trucking business, doing all the paperwork for IMCA and being in charge of the 2015 banquet, it’s been a little overwhelming.” “But I’ve been to tons and tons of tracks around the country. I’ve seen a lot of good and I’ve seen some bad,” Munoz added. “I want to bring the good back to Lamar.” Guardrail sections have already been straightened and support posts replaced. New grandstand seating and light poles will also [Read More]

Another Arizona trip planned as Gaylord builds on 2015 IMCA Modified success

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Tows to sunny Arizona in January and February have helped make Ryan Gaylord faster when the IMCA racing season starts closer to home. He’s headed back to Cocopah Speedway next month to begin building on what was a very successful 2015 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified season. From Lakewood, Colo., Gaylord racked up three feature wins and another 11 top five finishes in 31 point season starts – at 16 different tracks in seven states – before ending the year with first, second and third-place October finishes at three specials in Kansas. “Looking back at everything, it was kind of chaos,” Gaylord said of his seventh season in the sanctioned division. “My younger brother Tripp is my crew chief and before the season we talked it over and decided we wanted to do what was the most fun for us.” While he qualified for just two of the four Winter Nationals features last year, the long trip was another learning one and paid dividends later in the season. “We had gone to [Read More]
