Zuhlsdorf reigns at Arlington

ARLINGTON, Minn. (Aug. 15) – Kris Zuhlsdorf picked up his first feature win of the season in Saturday’s Unhinged Pizza IMCA Northern SportMod feature at Arlington Raceway. Zuhlsdorf took the lead following an early restart. Jeremy Brown moved up from his sixth place start, tried unsuccessfully to pass and settled for second ahead of Chris Issacson and Matt Looft. Justin Luinenburg won the Eckblad Trucking IMCA Hobby Stock feature, leading flag to flag and holding off point leader Cory Probst, who had battled with him for 10 laps after moving up from his ninth place start. The B&B Racing Chassis IMCA Stock Car feature had four different leaders. Ultimately, Matt Speckman was the final leader, beating Dan Mackenthun to the finish line by the width of his bumper. Jeremy Schultz led the distance of the 95.7 IMCA Sprint Car feature from his front row spot. Edler dominates 141 SportMod main

By Greg Aregoni FRANCIS CREEK, Wis. (Aug. 15) – Billy Edler won his first career 141 Speedway feature in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod division in dominating fashion Saturday evening. Phil Mott held the point before Edler decided on lap five that it was his night to shine. Edler moved underneath the leader and never looked back. Edler opened nearly a straightaway lead by halfway. Scott Besaw ran to second but couldn’t cut into the lead until it was too late. Edler worked in lapped traffic the final five laps but was never touched in earning his first career win. Besaw finished second ahead of Scott Boyea. Kevin Bethke beat Travis Arenz for the fourth spot. Eric Scribner celebrated his birthday by winning the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature and Devin Snellenberger topped the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Matt Brehmer started way back in ninth, was in the lead on lap two and sped to the Mach-1 Sport Compact win.

VanLaanen cruises at Thunderhill Raceway

(Aug. 16) – After taking the lead on lap two and surviving a number of restarts, Jarred VanLaanen’s cruised to victory Sunday in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main event at Thunderhill Raceway. VanLaanen built a straightaway advantage, only to see it taken away by a caution on lap eight. VanLaanen again set sail on the restart, leaving the battle for second. Jacob Zellner bobbled while running near the front, setting off a chain reaction wreck that collected title contenders Bernie Reinhardt and Tom Stark. Stark returned on the lead lap after a trip down pit lane. Several mid-race cautions kept the field tight but no one had anything to challenge VanLaanen, who dominated the remainder of the event with his second feature win of the season. Vince Engebregtsen was second and Cody Rass placed third. Other feature winners were Greg Gretz in the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds, Tom Brumlic in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Dave Schmidt in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks.

Gustin is Late Model winner at Marshalltown

By Jeremy Fox MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Aug. 14) – Richie Gustin was the winner when IMCA Late Models made their first visit of the season Friday to Marshalltown Speedway. Todd Cooney grabbed the early lead In the Rumours Sports Bar & Grill IMCA Late Models 20-lap feature but had to contend with Paul Nagle and Gustin following an early restart. Cooney and Gustin battled for the lead before the caution came out when Nagle slid off the top of the track. The front pair raced wheel-to-wheel with Cooney scored first at the conclusion of each lap. Gustin was able to complete the pass for the lead on lap 11 and did not let the caution on lap 14 deny him the victory. Cooney settled for second and Darren Ackerman took third from crowd favorite Darrel DeFrance. Chad Holladay was fifth. Visitor Chris Abelson was the Coors Light IMCA Modified winner and Damon Murty topped the Miller Lite IMCA Stock Carss. Repeat trip to I-90 victory lane for Eakin

By Steve Zwemke HARTFORD, S.D. (Aug. 14) – Nate Eakin seems to have taken the baton from Colin Smith in the Coffee Cup IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car division at I-90 Speedway. Eakin blazed to his second straight win and fourth checkers of the season Saturday night. His recent run of success ended a streak in which Smith had won four of five races. Smith took second this week with Jeff Edgington third. Eakin said he’s really been enjoying the track and credited his team with finding the right setup for the car to make it an easy drive.

Wilson wins third at Dacotah Speedway

MANDAN, N.D. (Aug. 14) – Win number three on the season came Saturday for Spencer Wilson in the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature at Dacotah Speedway. Tracy Domagala ran up front while Hank Berry and Wilson took over second and third, respectively, before a caution on lap eight. On the restart, Wilson and Drew Christianson split Berry. They raced side-by-side for second while Berry slid into the clutches of Jeremy Keller. It was a three car battle for the lead before Wilson passed Domagala for first, bringing Christianson with him with 10 laps to go. Wilson pulled away from the field while Domagala tried to hold off Jeff Taylor for fourth. Taylor, who started 12th, passed Domagala with seven laps to go. As the laps wound down, Keller caught Christianson for second and started eating into Wilson’s lead but time ran out. Taylor finished fourth as Marlyn Seidler made a late-race pass on Domagala to finish fifth. Jason Berg was the Mach-1 Sport Compact winner.

Roath scores Summer Slam win

By Lonnie Wheatley PEORIA, Ariz. (Aug. 15) – Ryan Roath took the headline feature event Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park’s fourth annual Summer Slam. Roath rallied from eighth to capture his first 9th World Vapor IMCA Modified feature win of the season ahead of pole starter Ty Rogers. Guy Norton, Garrett Funk and George Fronsman completed the top five.

Brown holds on for IMCA Hobby Stock checkers at Benton County Speedway

VINTON, Iowa (Aug. 16) – Although he’s faced his share of struggles this season, Matt Brown had a reason to smile Sunday night. The IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock driver raced to his first win of the season at Benton County Speedway. Brown took the lead at the drop of the green and fought off pressure from Leah Wroten and Bill Bonnett throughout much of the 15-lapper. He was able to open up some breathing room when lapped cars slowed the progress of his pursuers with four laps to go. It was also heavy traffic that nearly prevented Brown from making his way to victory lane a short time later. Brett Vanous slipped past both Wroten and Bonnett in traffic with three laps to go while Brown extended his advantage. Those backmarkers, however, allowed Vanous to close on Brown in the waning moments. Ward outruns rain at Tri-City

AUBURN, Mich. (Aug. 7) – A.J. Ward beat the rain and the rest of the Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified field Friday at Tri-City Motor Speedway. As the green flag waved, Kody Johnson led the pack into turn one but Matt Szecsodi had the lead when the lap was scored. Szecsodi ran in front for more than half the race but closing in on him was Ward, who took over the point on lap 12. A lap later, the rain starting falling heavier, the cars started sliding on the wet clay and the race was called with seven circuits left. Szecsodi came close to picking up his first feature win but wound up second to Ward. Chad Wernette finished third, followed by Kody Johnson and Myron DeYoung.

Jeff Anderson rules Stuart Hobby Stocks

By Josh Reynolds STUART, Iowa (Aug. 9) – He’s been to victory lane a lot of times since, but Jeff Anderson won his first IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature in 25 years Sunday at Stuart Speedway. Anderson eased away from the pack and Austin Luellen made it to second as the white flag flew. Matt Webb, Jeff James and finally Joshn Gilman ran at the front of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified pack. Nick Roberts made it close at the end but couldn’t catch Gilman and settled for second. Marcus Fagan checked out on his IMCA Sunoco Stock Car foes. Kody Havens was the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod winner and Jacob Reiter ran away from the rest of the Mach-1 Sport Compact field. Next week will be the second annual Richard Welch “Bones” Memorial presented by Jorgensen Custom Hay Services. Northern SportMods will race for $1,000 to win.
