Another young driver wins first feature at Off Road

By Randy Pospishil NORFOLK, Neb. (Aug. 8) – A week after Gage Koch, a junior at Norfolk Catholic High School, won his first feature in the Hobby Stock division at Off Road Speedway, Joey Haase – who will be entering his junior year at Winside High School this fall – earned his first win in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod division Saturday night. The two have crossed paths on a racetrack before as competitors for two seasons in the now-defunct junior hornet class at Riviera Raceway a few years ago. Haase won the division title in their first year of racing, while Koch won the second year. Haase took advantage of his outside second row starting position along with the race’s second caution and restart to obtain the lead, then held off pursuer Justin Addison for the final 13 laps of the 18-lap race. “These last few weeks I’ve had a lot of bad luck. We went through two transmissions in the last two nights and seven DNFs,” Haase said. “It’s been a bad year [Read More]

He’d started sixth when action resumed from the June 12 event halted with eight laps in the book. The Friday night feature was Ward’s Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified tour career first and came on his home track, as well as two days before his birthday. “I’d run second in the series race here the Friday before so I knew we were close,” said Ward said. “I got elected to the Fast Shafts All-Star invitational, then we got our first win at Afton. How much better could it possibly get?” Ward used the lower line in getting to second, then ran side-by-side with Tyler Stoddard for a couple circuits before taking over in front. The final caution came out with two laps to go but Ward pulled ahead to beat Stoddard, Matt Cole, point leader Eddie Sites and previous race winner James Cornell across the stripe. Who needs notes? Gearhart is first in Thomas County Fair Modified feature

COLBY, Kan. (July 31) – Those copious notes Cody Gearhart had from his one previous visit to Colby didn’t apply when he returned to Thomas County Speedway for Friday’s fair special. It didn’t matter. Gearhart led the last 21 of 25 circuits in winning the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event. The $1,000 victory was accompanied by a spot on the ballot for the 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “I won the one time I ran here last season. This was the first time I’ve been back this year,” said Gearhart, now giving serious thought to make more frequent trips to Thomas County. “They’d decreased the banking (this spring) since the last time I was here so the notes I took from last year didn’t apply.” Taking a more off the cuff approach, Gearhart started fourth in the field of 24 and avoided getting caught up in an early multi-car fracas. He caught pole starter Chris Heim four laps in and led to the checkers. “I tried some off the wall setup stuff and [Read More]
