Thornton, Noll top Canyon’s Desert Classic main events

By Lonnie Wheatley PEORIA, Ariz. (Sept. 19-20) – Ricky Thornton Jr. and Jason Noll were $1,500 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature winners at Canyon Speedway Park’s Desert Classic. Thornton’s 13th win of the year at Canyon came on Friday, opening night of the 26th annual special. Noll became a 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational candidate when he collected the Saturday checkers. Chased to the line by ninth-starter George Fronsman, Thornton had drawn the outside front row spot on the grid for Friday’s feature. Mike Strobl raced from 19th to take the show position. Mark Stewart and Jason Noll rounded out the top five. Noll put a stop to Thornton’s CSP domination on night two. He raced from the third position to snare his first CSP feature win since topping the Winter Classic opener on Jan. 24. Noll crossed the stripe ahead of Ryan Roath with Eric Center, James Webster and Cody Graham in the top five. Johnny DeYoung wins “awesome” Great Lakes Nationals

CRYSTAL, Mich. (Sept. 13) – Johnny DeYoung was the first and the final leader in Crystal Motor Speedway’s season-ending Great Lakes Nationals. Saturday’s $3,000 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified victory Saturday night put him on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Chad Wernette was second, a couple car lengths off the pace, and Vern Buskirk, Kenny Playter and Jimmy Hale Jr. rounded out the top five. “We had a pretty good season to say the least,” DeYoung exclaimed, following his sixth checkered flag run of the year at Crystal. “It was an awesome race and it was awesome to win it.” He’d rocketed from dead last to win his heat race, then drew the outside front row starting spot for the 50-lap main event and led the first four circuits. Tire tests complete, Yankee results are official

VINTON, Iowa (Sept. 17) – Feature results are now official for both Saturday, Sept. 13 Deery Brothers Summer Series and XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour events held during the 37th annual Yankee Dirt Track Classic at Farley Speedway. Tire samples were taken from the top five finishers in the IMCA Late Model tour main event and from the top two in the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main. All met the criteria for baseline Hoosier tire samples in the respective divisions. Checks have been mailed to all seven drivers.

Borgen is spectacular at Buffalo River Fargo Tractor special

GLYNDON, Minn. (Sept. 13-14) – A driver who is no stranger to victory lane at Buffalo River Race Park found his way to that hallowed ground again Sunday night. Bryce Borgen topped the $1,000 to win IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event in the 2014 season finale. The two-time BRRP track champion earned a spot on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational along with the Fargo Tractor IMCA Spectacular checkers. Deveryn Malmlov, Saturday winner Justin Jones, Michael Greseth and Cody Erickson completed the top five. Borgen had started fourth and was most of a straightaway behind Jones before starting his drive to the front. “All of a sudden my car just came alive,” Borgen said following his third sanctioned win of the season. “I’d run second on Saturday night. Phillips County Raceway crowns track champions

HOLYOKE, Colo. (Sept. 13) – Phillips County Raceway wrapped up the last race of the season with a double feature ending with the track championships for each division. The night started off by running four features postponed from Aug. 23 due to inclement weather. Garrett Sporhase checked out and won the first IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main, followed by Zach Hilzer and Jesse Taylor. The Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main was taken by Chad Dolan ahead of of Brandon Clough and Mike Lininger. Justin Bussell collected the checkers in a dandy of a first feature for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Kyle Clough and Gregory Gutt completed the top three. Leland Stute, Michael Brunswick and Woody Woodhead ran 1-2-3 in the first IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock race. It then came down to the wire determining track championships for each division. Still dominating the Modifieds was Sporhase, who checked out once again in sweeping the night. He was followed by Bubba Alvarado and Taylor. North Star Series checkers fly for five, Benson best in Arlington Sprint tour field

ARLINGTON, Minn. (Sept 13) – Six drivers won IMCA special events features Saturday at Arlington Raceway. Redline Racing Parts North Star Series victories went to Brandon Beckendorf in the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, Dan Mackenthun in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Eric Larson in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, Justin Luinenburg in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Nate Coopman in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts. Clint Benson made another long tow from Nebraska pay off with the RaceSaver Sprint Series of Minnesota triumph. Chad Porter had the early lead in the Modified feature but on the fifth lap, Beckendorf got around him and led the remaining 15 laps. The tour win was his second straight and career sixth, matching Beckendorf with Eric Dailey for the all-time lead in the division. Curt Lund was a distant second and Jerry Wren took third. Humphries cruises to Sprint Series win at Eastside

By Jim Haines WAYNESBORO, Va. (Sept. 12) – Tom Humphries won the final Fast Friday event of the year at Eastside Speedway to close out the dirt schedule for the Virginia Sprint Series. The IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour win was Humphries’ fourth this season. Chris Ware and Anthony Linkenhoker paced the field to green and Linkenhoker was out first with Brian Lawson and Humpries already on the way by lap one. Humphries was by Lawson on lap three and all over Linkenhoker by lap seven. Humphries saw a gap with the rear of the field coming up and shot through into the lead, then cruised to the win. Linkenhoker, Lawson, Ryan Price and Daren Bolac completed the top five. McCollum wins 100th career Stock Car feature at Arlington

ARLINGTON, Minn. (Aug. 30) – Jeff McCollum made history at Arlington Raceway on Saturday night when he won the B&B Racing Chassis IMCA Stock Car feature. The victory was McCollum’s career 100th in the sanctioned division. Chris Meyer was the early leader, ahead of Brent Uecker. Lap six saw a yellow flag for a spun car in the first turn. McCollum restarted in the third row and shot through the field to take third place; he was then battling with Uecker, Dan Mackenthun and Shaun Bruns for the lead. By lap nine, McCollum was the leader with Mackenthun close behind. Uecker fell out on lap 10 but Mackenthun wasn’t giving up. Another caution flag came out on lap 16. On the restart Mackenthun got too high in turns three and four, losing two spots. McCollum was then challenged by Bruns but held on for the landmark win. Hale hauls from back to win EQ Wild West Tour feature at Atomic

ATOMIC CITY, Idaho (Aug. 23) – Michael Hale was quick to credit the track crew at Atomic Motor Raceway with an assist following his Saturday night EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour victory. The Friday night event for traveling IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds had been lost to rain, which left flooded track and pit conditions in its wake. A long day of work made the 1/3-mile dirt oval raceable, however. The chief beneficiary of those efforts was Hale, who restarted at the back after exiting early in the 30-lapper to fix a broken tie rod. Fastest down the backstretch, he quickly worked his way toward the front to challenge leader Tony Steward, taking the lead and bringing the 20th starting Casey Delp along into second near midway. “The car worked really well coming out of (turn) two,” Hale said of his career third Wild West Tour checkers. “It was a fun race and I appreciate how much work went into getting the track ready. Sobbing is tops in Tipton XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 19) – And then there were nine. Jesse Sobbing became the ninth different winner in as many XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour events this season on Tuesday night at Cedar County Raceway. He bested a stellar field of 45 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds for the victory that paid $1,000 and put him on the ballot for next year’s Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Brad Diercks, 16th starting Brian Webb, Darin Duffy and Kyle Brown completed the top five. Steve Stewart drew the pole start and battled back and forth with Sobbing much of the first half in the 30-lapper. Stewart used the low line while Sobbing stayed on the high side, finally finding his way past near midway. Duffy then gave chase, also up top, while Diercks and Stewart contested for third. Two late cautions interrupted the action when Richie Gustin and Dustin Kraklio went off the top of the oval in the second set of turns.
