A couple restarts and lapped traffic didn’t slow Hibbard much as he won comfortably ahead of Jeff Emerson, Keith White, J.P. Dowell and Chris Elliott. Also winning tour features were defending champion Gabe Tucker in the Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMod Lone Star Series main and Kirk Martin in the Wild Child Race Cars Stock Car headliner. Smith continues Cocopah success with second Winter Nationals Modified sweep

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Feb. 14-15) – Different weekend, same results. Dylan Smith returned to Cocopah Speedway to complete his four-race sweep of Winter Nationals, earning $1,000 for his Friday night IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified win and $3,000 for the Saturday checkers. He’d also gone south to Somerton to win $1,000 features on Feb. 7 and 8. “On Saturday I matched the total I won the first three races at Cocopah so it was a pretty good night,” said Smith, who will spend part of that bounty fixing his hauler, which broke down last Thursday in Arizona. “We raced with a lot of good guys down here. I hope we can keep winning races when we start racing at home in Nebraska.” Smith won from seventh starting on Friday and from 10th on Saturday. The victories were his IMCA career 91st and 92nd. Tim Ward, Justen Yeager, Scott Drake and R.C. Whitwell completed Friday’s top five. Chasing Smith across the stripe on Saturday were Drake, Winter Challenge Series champion Ricky Thornton Jr., Jesse Sobbing and Zane [Read More]

Smith sweeps Winter Nationals IMCA Modified features at Cocopah

SOMERTON, Ariz. (Feb. 7-8) – Despite his lengthy record of success, Dylan Smith has never started a race season quite like this. Smith swept weekend IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified Winter Nationals features at Cocopah Speedway, earning $1,000 for each of his Friday and Saturday night victories. “It’s a great way to start the season,” said the former national champion and defending IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s king. “I’ve never won right out of the box like this before. It was kind of different for me.” Smith started Friday’s 25-lapper from outside row two and passed pole starter Kent Rosevear for the lead on the fifth circuit. Sixth starting R.C. Whitwell moved up to challenge on the inside before Smith took the faster lower line away. After encountering lapped traffic with eight to go, frontrunners were forced to use all three grooves to negotiate their way through the field. Smith took the win ahead of Whitwell, Marlyn Seidler, Justen Yeager and Ricky Thornton Jr. Yeager and Thornton both advanced 10 places from [Read More]

Sobbing ends Thornton’s series streak in Canyon finale

PEORIA, Ariz. (Feb. 1) – Two weeks of ups and downs ended on the upside Saturday night for Jesse Sobbing. Sobbing beat Ricky Thornton Jr. to the $1,000 checkers by half a car length in the sixth and final Winter Challenge Series feature for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds at Canyon Speedway Park. The victory was the first of the season for the Iowa traveler, runner-up in national standings and the top rookie driver in the division in 2013. Thornton, meanwhile, settled for second after having won four straight Canyon contests. “For two weeks, I’ve had races where I ran well and others I would have been happy just finishing,” said Sobbing, also the defending Winter Challenge Series champion. “I ran fourth in the feature on Thursday then broke while leading my “B” race on Friday.” Sobbing started the 25-lapper from the fifth spot and was quickly fighting with Thornton for the lead. They were running with lapped traffic before a yellow flag came out. Switching lines on the last lap, Sobbing, already on the [Read More]
