The series ended with July 4 and 5 shows at Heart O’ Texas Speedway; the July 3 event at Cotton Bowl Speedway was rained out and will not be rescheduled. A minimum of eight events must be scheduled and held for full bonus points to be awarded and applied to national and regional standings. Harris sprints to fourth Virginia Series feature win

By Jim Haines SHENANDOAH, Va. (July 12) – Jerald Harris turned a good run in to a great finish as storms danced all around Shenandoah Speedway Saturday night. Harris won his fourth Virginia Sprint Series feature of the season. Three of those IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car victories have now come on the Shenandoah asphalt oval. Chris Ware and Charlie Ware paced the field to the green before Charlie Ware took off and brought Tony Harris along. Harris got by on lap four and did his best to run away from the rest of the field but Tom Humphries, Harris and French Grimes were on a march to the front. The battle for second between Humphries and Harris ended right after halfway when Humphries rolled into the infield. With five to go, Harris had a great run go bad as his right rear tire was wearing out and starting to vibrate. With just four to go he had to slow to make it to the end. Harris and Grimes drove by, with Anthony Linkenhoker [Read More]

Auringer earns second Hogan Memorial win at Benton County Speedway

By Ryan Clark VINTON, Iowa (July 13) – The last time J.D. Auringer won the Hogan Memorial, he led every lap except one. He did himself one better Sunday night at Benton County Speedway. Auringer, who first won the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified special in 2007, led all 40 laps Sunday night to earn his second victory in the event’s 20-year history. Auringer earned $1,250 for winning the race, plus $2,250 in lap money and the halfway leader bonus and additional bonus money to bring his total share of the purse to $3,850. Forty-five Modified drivers from six states signed in to compete Sunday at Vinton. From his outside front row starting spot, Auringer pulled away from pole-sitter Jeremy Mills when the green flag waved. Running the high groove, Auringer built a straightaway lead and encountered lapped traffic while Hunter Marriott and Dan [Read More]

Benson stands tallest at SportMod Nationals

BRITT, Iowa (July 4) – Aaron Benson finished first on The Fourth. As a result, he drove out of the pit area at Hancock County Speedway with a check for $3,500 and a trophy taller than himself. Benson led all 25 laps from the pole in the twice-rescheduled, MaxYield Seed-sponsored Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod Nationals. The victory was good for $2,500; Benson also got $500 bonuses for having won previously this season at Britt and for racing at least three times there previously in 2014. “I’ve been second at big-money races before. We finally got a big win here,” said Benson, at 5-8 four inches shorter than the hardware he took home. ”There were a lot of good cars lined up behind me. It was good to win in front of friends, family, my car owner and sponsors at my home track.” Shane Swanson, George Nordman, Greg Sidles and Matt Lettow completed the top five. Benson built a straightaway lead by the 10th circuit and the first 17 laps clicked off caution-free. Cautions late in [Read More]

Lagroon is tops at Salina’s Topless Challenge

By Larry Lowrey Jr. SALINA, Kan. (July 4) – By his standards, Corey Lagroon was struggling coming into Friday night’s Topless Challenge at Salina Speedway. Lagroon has finished consistently near the front almost every single night. But the former IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified track champion is out to win and victory lane had avoided him all season long. Until Friday evening, that is. Lagroon took the lead away from Danny Morrison Jr. on the fifth lap and led to the finish, earning $1,000 and a spot of the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Morrison and Josh Blumer led the topless field to the green flag. Morrison got the jump at the start but Lagroon made all the right moves as he got by Morrison. As he completed the pass, it was evident this was going to be Lagroon’s night. He checked out once in the lead while the crowded tussle for second continued behind him. Morrison held on for second while Mike Petersilie finished third. Point leader Joe Cleveland and Jesse Richter rounded out [Read More]

Phillips tops Stock Car headliner at Cardinal’s Kelly Sheen Memorial

EUNICE, N.M (July 5) – David Phillips was a runner-up at last year’s Kelly Sheen Memorial Topless Shootout at Cardinal Speedway. He was a winner at this year’s event, taking the $3,000 checkers in Saturday’s headliner for IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. “This was a pretty cool race to win,” he said, after watching the video. “It’s an honor to win it, based on what this show is.” Phillips started fifth and needed seven laps to get the lead. He pulled away from the field following two restarts later in the 30-lapper. Second in the 2013 Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMod main event at Eunice, Phillips is running a very part-time schedule in the Stock Car this season. Now the winner of three of five starts, he and wife Caitlin are expecting their first child in September. Littlejohn comes up big on night two at HO’T

By J.M. Hallas WACO, Texas (July 5) – Nicholas Littlejohn finished 16 positions better on night two of the Lone Star Series Texas Nationals twinbill than he did on night one. That improvement paid $1,000 and put him on the ballot for the upcoming Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Littlejohn won Saturday’s IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature at Heart O’ Texas Speedway after race-long leader Dean Abbey suffered mechanical problems following a late restart. Abbey looked to become the only weekend double winner but a stopped car brought the caution out on lap 18. As the green flag waved again, Abbey broke a hub on the left rear wheel stacking up the field and collecting three other cars. Cass took a look low on Littlejohn for the lead, but not able to get by. On the final lap Cass tried one last time, but came up short as Littlejohn took home the victory. “Dean (Abbey) was fast. It was his to lose,” said Littlejohn. “I got a little bit of him after the studs pulled [Read More]

Abbey takes IMCA Modified Lone Star Series opener

By J.M. Hallas WACO, Texas (July 4) – First-year IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified driver Dean Abbey had the run of his life in picking up the $1,000 Lone Star Series Texas Nationals win Friday at Heart O’ Texas Speedway. For two-thirds of the race Abbey chased veteran Keith Green until finally making the bottom work on a restart. If that wasn’t pressure enough, a late caution set up a green, white, checkered finish that put former IMCA national champion Keith White and his brother Paul, a past USAC Silver Crown champ, on his tail. Abbey was able to get a good jump on green and got some breathing room while the White brothers exchanged slide jobs on each other. Abbey went unchallenged while Paul beat Keith in the second place battle. Josh McGaha was fourth by all of one one-thousandth of a second over Sam Cox. “The bottom finally worked out for me,” said Abbey, already a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot candidate. “We’ve been here twice this year in the Modified and raced [Read More]
