Cole’s first Yates County Speedway visit ends with Friesen Chevrolet Empire State feature win

DUNDEE, N.Y. (June 15) – Matt Cole might have himself a new favorite track. Cole made his first visit to Yates County Speedway on Sunday and came away with his career-first Friesen Chevrolet Empire State Series victory. “It’s a fun little track,” said the third-year IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified driver. “My luck at new tracks has been pretty good so far this season. Hopefully that’s something we can continue.” Keith Lamphere led much of the way before giving up the lead to Cole in the late going and finishing second. Rich Karlnoski, Bumps Scutt and Mike Griffin completed the top five. Gary Smith and Lamphere led the pack to green with Smith grabbing the early lead. Mattison charges to Stock Car win in Redline Racing Parts North Star Series

SLAYTON, Minn. (June 13) – Gary Mattison raced better on the track than he drew for position. As a result, he drove away from the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car field for his career-first Redline Racing Parts North Star Series feature win Friday night at Murray County Speedway. Mattison started 10th and caught defending champion Jim Larson and Matt Speckman after halfway for the lead and the eventual victory. “I went to the high side to pass,” Mattison said. “The car was good and I just tried to be patient.” Larson ended in second. Hard charger Jake Masters moved up 10 spots to third, Speckman was fourth and Jake Bruns completed the top five. Jay Noteboom had better luck with the draw, getting the pole and leading all 20 laps of the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event. Moyer cruises to $2,000 SportMod Challenge win

By Mike McGuire DAVENPORT, Iowa (June 13) – Austin Moyer took home the $2,000 top prize in Friday’s Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod Challenge at Davenport Speedway. Moyer led 41 of the 50 laps en route to the highest-paying victory of his career. He started fifth and took the lead from Greg Wichman on lap ten. Once in front, Moyer’s only serious challenge came from Dan Mohr, who three-wheeled his racecar around the high side the entire race. “It was a long race and I was glad when it was over,” admitted Moyer. “I couldn’t have been any happier.” Mohr had to settle for second, six car lengths off the pace, with Carter VanDenBerg a distant third. Humphries gains late lead, Sprint Series win at Shenandoah

By Jim Haines SHENANDOAH, Va. (June 14) – The wait was worth it Saturday night for Tom Humphries. Humphries got his second Virginia Sprint Series win of the season Saturday at Shenandoah Speedway. Tony Harris had the lead for much of the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car headliner, pulling off with tire issues after relinquishing the point in the late going. Charlie Ware led to lap three when Tony Harris powered his way to the front and took off with Humphries, Brian Lawson and Jerald Harris all chasing. Tony Harris stayed strong before a caution waved for debris at halfway. Humphries got by and Harris slowed with a tire problem, then headed for the pits. Jerald Harris caught Lawson for second and took up the chase but by now it was too little too late as Humphries held on for the win. Stock star gets career first Modified win in IMCA Redline Racing Parts North Star Series

REDWOOD FALLS, Minn. (June 8) – The driver with the most career Stock Car tour wins became the driver with the most recent Redline Racing Parts North Star Series Modified victory Sunday at Redwood Speedway. Dustin Larson earned his career first IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified checkers by passing Curt Lund for the lead on the seventh of 20 laps and then holding off challenges from Jerry Wren. “I was pretty happy to pass Curt. He’s pretty good,” said Larson, an eight-time series Stock Car winner and the 2012 champion. “This was my eighth night in a Modified and I’m starting to get the hang of it. It definitely drives differently than a Stock Car but it’s fun.” The last caution waved with five to go. Larson won by four car lengths. Hammock travels to Oklahoma for SST feature win

ARDMORE, Okla. (June 7) – The out-of-state excursions for the Sprint Series of Texas have been good to Jerry Hammock. The tour ventured to Southern Oklahoma Speedway on Saturday night and the 12th starting Hammock caught buddy Rodney Henderson coming to the checkers for the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car tour win, his second of the season. “I guess we’ll just have to win all the out-of-state races,” said Hammock, also the victor when the series traveled to Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Louisiana in April. “They really did a fabulous job preparing the track for us. The weather was awful and they had to rush through to get done before the rain.” Russell Shoulders. Kenny Elwood and Gary Kelley were third through fifth, respectively, in the 20-lapper at Ardmore. Despite early spin, Harris is winner at Natural Bridge

(June 7) – Jerald Harris traded cars with his brother to get some seat time in the car before they take it to the IMCA RaceSaver Nationals at Eagle Raceway in August. Along the way he won his third Virginia Sprint Series feature of the season, after spinning off track on lap one and storming back to take the Saturday win at Natural Bridge Speedway. Chris Ware and Charlie Ware paced the field to green with Charlie out first and leading lap one before a quick yellow for the spin by Harris. Charlie was back at it before Chad Worrell moved around the top and in to first as Charlie slowed with drive line failure and headed for the pits. Chad Worrell was smooth out front as the circuits clicked away. By lap 20 Harris had made his way to second and was all over Worrell. Garst Memorial checkers fly for Grabouski

By Bill Grit MAYETTA, Kan. (May 31) – A regular visitor to victory lanes around the region took top honors at Thunder Hill Speedway’s 20th annual Don Garst Memorial Saturday night. Jordan Grabouski caught Justin Becker, then held off Clay Hale in lapped traffic to top a 20-lap feature for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds that ran without caution and paid $1,020 to win. Already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, Grabouski was followed across the stripe by Hale, Matt Stallbaumer, Cory Wray and Danny Holt. Garst was the first flagman at Thunder Hill and the Modified feature was flagged by his grandson Tyler, using Don’s flags. Lance Brogman withstood a couple late restarts to win the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature, ahead of Matt Haid and Brian LaBonte. Yeager extends streak with EQ Wild West Tour sweep at Sweetwater

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (May 30-31) – He’s always been consistent, but it’s been a while since Justen Yeager put together an EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour winning streak. He’s hoping the current trend continues. Yeager swept IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified series events at Sweetwater Speedway, earning $1,000 for each of his Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31 victories. “It’s always good to win at home,” said the three-time tour champion, who took the opening night checkers ahead of Eddie Belec and Jeremy Frenier, then topped the Saturday show ahead of Belec and Jeff Hunter. “It was nice to have those Colorado guys come up here. Center, Schultz race to Classic checkers at Arizona Speedway

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (May 24-25) – Eric Center outran his nephew while Brian Schultz raced from worst to first. Both earned $1,000 for Memorial Weekend IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature wins at Arizona Speedway’s John Morris Classic and earned berths on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Center collected the first win of his 31st racing season on opening night at Apache Junction. He’d started fifth in the Saturday show, was up to third before a lap five yellow and spent most of the 20-lapper running alone in the bottom groove with Guy Norton higher up on the oval. His nephew Cody Center made a late charge from 13th starting to second.
