CJ Speedway opens 2023 season with packed house

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (April 14, 2023) – The racing season at CJ Speedway opened Friday and 93 race teams competed in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd on a beautiful night for racing.   The Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds took the green flag for their 20-lap main event with a strong field of 18 drivers taking the initial green flag. Steve Gustaf Sr. took the lead from the pole but his time at the front was short lived as Drew Janssen used the very fast high line of the track to take the lead.  Janssen went on to pick up the win but it was anything but easy as Jarrett Brown applied pressure late in the race as lapped traffic came into play. Chris Zogg held off Kurt Kile late as these two talented drivers finished second and third, respectively.   The IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, branded as The Class Too Tough To Tame, proved once again that when they hit the track, hang on because there will be excitement.  Nathan Ballard drew the [Read More]

2023 Prelude to the Super Nationals

Oskvig’s goal is to do Super Nationals race director job so well no one notices

BOONE, Iowa (April 11, 2023) – The goal Grant Oskvig has for his new job is to do it so well nobody notices him. The veteran track official and former flagman is the new race director for the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s.  He’ll be in charge of organizing cars on the track, making calls, dispatching tow trucks and ultimately everything that happens on the Boone Speedway oval during the entire week of dirt track racing’s biggest event. “The number one thing is consistency. Drivers need to know what to expect from me when they’re on the track,” said Oskvig, who moves one office to the right in the grandstand tower after running transponder scoring at Super Nationals the last three years. “To be consistent without my name being brought up would be amazing.” “One of the things I like best about Super Nationals is that it brings so many drivers from across the country and Canada to race at Boone. It makes them all better and faster,” he added. “It’s also [Read More]

Spahr picks up where he left off with win at Port Royal

By Frank Buhrman PORT ROYAL, Pa. (April 8, 2023) – After hitting his stride at the end of the 2022 River Valley Builders Pennsylvania Sprint Series season, Logan Spahr picked up right where he left off Saturday night. Spahr wired the field to capture the 20-lap 2023 IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car main event at Port Royal Speedway, where the series is sponsored by Penns Valley Meat Market. The race kicked off the Silver Anniversary season for PASS, one of the oldest IMCA RaceSaver regional groups in the nation.  Spahr led a youth movement that also included runner-up Seth Schnoke (3.07 seconds back), fourth-place Dylan Shatzer and fifth-place Zach Rhodes. Another member of the youth contingent, Owen Dimm, came home sixth. That left it up to third-finishing Ken Duke Jr. of Selinsgrove to uphold the honor of the veterans, and his run did so nicely. Duke is hardly ancient, but he has more PASS starts (238) and victories (22) than the other top-five finishers combined (131 and three, respectively). Spahr, who moved from micro-sprints into full-sized [Read More]

Waw wows Grayson County crowd with first IMCA Modified win since 2007

BELLS, Texas (April 1, 2023) – Sixteen years after his first visit to victory lane, Donovan Waw made his second Saturday night at Grayson County Speedway. The Royce City racer wowed the crowd with the opening night Friesen Performance IMCA Modified win … his career second and first since the 2007 season, also at Bells. “After that last restart, I don’t know if I realized I was even in the lead. I was focused on running laps,” said Waw, still living those Days of Thunder dreams. “It didn’t register when I won. I was excited but I was a little taken aback. It had been a little while since I won.”  Feature win number one came in just the third start of Waw’s admitted challenging first IMCA season. A newcomer to the sport, he was chasing the learning curve on everything about the car while making just a handful of starts every year. During a lengthy break from driving, Waw helped Brandon Watson while turning his focus to family. He got back behind the wheel in a [Read More]

Packets being mailed to all IMCA divisions, some 2023 decals are only available online

VINTON, Iowa (March 31, 2023) – Decal packets in all divisions are now being mailed from the IMCA office each day of the work week Monday through Friday. Modified and Northern SportMod packets do not include decals from divisional title sponsor Friesen Performance; Hobby Stock packets do not include decals from regional title sponsor Big Daddy Race Cars. Drivers who want to display Friesen Performance or Big Daddy Race Cars decals can download either by going to the respective decal placement diagrams under the Forms menu on the IMCA website. In addition, some Modified drivers received a single regional title sponsor decal, which should be displayed on the driver’s side door, because of a shortage in the number of supplied decals on hand and the need to get packets mailed. Those drivers can also download a second decal from the IMCA website or request one by calling the IMCA office. And while Northern SportMod drivers are not required to display Smiley’s Racing Products decals, Smiley’s decal placement is a must for Southern SportMod drivers who [Read More]

Dinsmore delivers opening night win at I-37

By J.M. Hallas PLEASANTON, Texas (March 25, 2023) – And so it begins.  I-37 Speedway, after a “proposed” opening night rain out last week, raised the curtain on the new season with a host of racing on the night’s agenda. The Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds, thanks to Sundowner Performance Diesel, had a $1,000 to win Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifier won by Greg Dinsmore. As the feature roared to life it was Logan Dinsmore taking a look low on his dad Greg for the lead off turn two before a quick yellow. The leader got a good launch on a lap 14 restart green. Logan Dinsmore used the middle groove to get second back from Doyon but his dad had already checked out.  “Finally, we have this car figured out,” said Dinsmore. “We raced it a couple times last year. It was quick, but we had some problems we had to work out. It’s really coming around. Starting on the pole didn’t hurt. We had a good run in the heat.”  “It was awesome finishing [Read More]
