Despite heavy heart, Denny Eckrich gets Deery Series win at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (April 8) – After winning Saturday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at West Liberty Raceway, Denny Eckrich took time to remember friend Mike Humphrey, killed in a car accident earlier this week in Louisiana. “He helped me get into a Black Diamond (Chassis). He helped a lot of racers,” Eckrich said. “Mike was a good guy and he died too soon. There are a lot of heavy hearts tonight.” Eckrich led the last seven of 40 laps after taking the outside line around Jeremiah Hurst and Jesse Sobbing following a late restart. The $2,000 checkers were his IMCA Late Model tour career sixth; he also won the first series race held at West Liberty last year. Outside front row starter Spencer Diercks led the first 15 laps before slowing and watching Hurst motor by. Eckrich was part of a mid-race tangle with Jake Neal during their battle for second that left the left side of his car more than a little banged up but he soldiered on. Marolf is the main man in Deery Series opener at 34 Raceway

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (April 1) – Nick Marolf will have much memories of his second visit to 34 Raceway than he will of his first. Marolf passed Darrel DeFrance and led the last 30 times around the track in winning Saturday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series opener at West Burlington, earning $2,000 for his IMCA Late Model tour efforts. His one previous outing at 34 came at the Pepsi USA Nationals 17 years ago when his drive shaft broke during hot laps. “That was early in my career and we were just trying to make laps. That night was forgetful. I’d like to not remember it at all,” Marolf said. “We got lucky tonight with the redraw and got to start close to the front (third). I ran with Jay Johnson and then was able to pass Darrel in (turns) three and four for the lead.” While drivers swapped positions behind him, no one could find a way past Marolf before the checkers flew. DeFrance, competing in his 468th consecutive series event, ended as the runner-up and [Read More]

IMCA extends Late Model point season to April 1-Sept. 23

VINTON, Iowa – IMCA Late Model drivers running for national and state honors will have more on-track opportunities in 2017. IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National and Allstar Performance State points will be awarded at all Deery Brothers Summer Series events as the tour switches from a unique 50-point system to IMCA’s familiar 40-point system. That change begins with the Deery Series opener at 34 Raceway in West Burlington on Saturday, April 1. National and state points will be awarded at events through the Liberty 100 Weekend series finale at West Liberty Raceway Friday and Saturday, Sept. 22-23. “Changing the point structure makes the Deery Series consistent with how we handle other tours, such as the Hawkeye Dirt Tour for Modifieds and the RaceSaver Sprint Car series,” explained Tour Director Kevin Yoder, “and makes it possible to incorporate those races into our national and state standings.” Promoters have the option to award track points for Deery Series events held during the track point season that runs from April 28-Aug. 27. Holladay wins first Deery Series feature, Bruening clinches tour crown at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (Sept. 24) – Chad Holladay won his first Deery Brothers Summer Series feature while Tyler Bruening became a first-time IMCA Late Model tour champion Saturday night at West Liberty Raceway. Holladay raced from the 15th starting spot to win the 50-lap finale for the 30th annual series, leading the last 28 circuits en route to the $2,500 Ideal Ready Mix Liberty 100 payday. “We had a good car, obviously. I was able to run the cushion where no one else was and found some bite on (turn) four. The cautions helped and we had a little bit of luck. It was a little bit of everything tonight,” he said. “A Deery Series win is something we’ve always wanted and we’ve come close a couple times. We’re hoping to pick up at the same place we left off next year.” Bruening made his charge toward the front from 21st starting and finished sixth. He’d gone into the day just a single point ahead of Jeff Aikey in the race for the series crown but the anticipated [Read More]

Deery Series title to be decided at Liberty 100

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (Sept. 20) – Tyler Bruening and Jeff Aikey will decide one of the closest point races in the Deery Brothers Summer Series’ 30-year history during the Ideal Ready Mix Liberty 100 weekend at West Liberty Raceway. Bruening seeks his career first IMCA Late Model tour title and leads Aikey by a single point heading into the Saturday, Sept. 24 50-lap, $2,500 to win finale. Aikey already owns seven Deery championships and knows all about tour nailbiters: He was one point better than Rob Toland in 2006, in another series title chase that wasn’t decided until the final event. “I’m looking forward to it. We’re good friends with Tyler. I’m going to West Liberty to win it and I know he is, too,” said Aikey, also the Deery king in 1987, 1988, 1996, 1999, 2009 and 2012. “He’ll be on his game and we’ll be on ours. I’m sure it will come down to a car or two.” “I’m excited about the chance to win an eighth title and my whole team is [Read More]

Kay collects Friday Yankee Dirt Track Classic Deery checkers at Farley

FARLEY, Iowa (Sept. 2) – Right place, right time. Justin Kay inherited the lead after a flat tire sidelined race-long leader Spencer Diercks and led to the finish of Friday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at Farley Speedway. The IMCA Late Model tour victory paid $2,000 and was the 19th of Kay’s career. He’s now tied with Rob Toland for seventh on the all-time Deery Series wins list. Fifty Late Models were on hand for the first of two Deery shows during the Yankee Dirt Track Classic, the top car count of the 30th annual tour. Diercks drew the pole start and led the first 38 times around the 3/8’s mile oval while Kay made his way forward from 11th starting. Diercks, however, pulled up lame on restart and Kay took charge. He was chased across the stripe by Joel Callahan, who advanced 22 positions from his last-place starting spot on the initial grid. Completing the top five were Jeff Aikey, Jeremiah Hurst and Ryan Dolan. Tyler Bruening was sixth and takes a one [Read More]
