Harris overcomes ailing engine, edges Kay for West Liberty Deery win

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (July 7) – Brian Harris overcame an ailing engine and beat Justin Kay to the checkers by less than half a car length to win the Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at West Liberty Raceway. The last two champions of the IMCA Late Model tour – Harris in 2013, Kay in 2014 – settled the Tuesday show with a drag race to the finish line. Harris had opened the door with a bobble in the final turn, but recovered in time to outrun Kay. The $3,000 victory was Harris’ career 11th and his third at West Liberty. Kay had won the last three, and four of the last five Deery events there. West Liberty, Independence shows next for Deery Series

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (July 3) – A pair of mid-week shows are next for the Deery Brothers Summer Series. Touring IMCA Late Models race for $3,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start on Tuesday, July 7 at West Liberty Raceway and Wednesday, July 8 at Independence Motor Speedway. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds are also on the slate at West Liberty, racing for $1,000 to win and all applicable points. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow. Grandstand admission is $16 for adults, $14 for seniors ages 62 and over, $10 for students ages 13-17 and free for 12 and under. Nezworski dominates in Deery win at Kossuth County, regains series point lead

ALGONA, Iowa (July 2) – His Thursday night feature win at Kossuth County Speedway did more than put $3,000 in Andy Nezworski’s bank account. His start to finish run at the front of the IMCA Late Model pack put him back on top of point standings for the Deery Brothers Summer Series. The 40-lapper ran caution free and Nezworski had more than a straightaway on runner-up Jeff Aikey when the checkers flew in from of a big Kossuth County crowd. Todd Malmstrom, Scott Fitzpatrick and Ryan Dolan completed the top five. “It took a while to get through lapped traffic, but we got through OK,” said Nezworski, who loaded up and headed for home rather than stay for the post-race fireworks display. “It was a good night for us and we needed it to be. Kay takes Deery win, series point lead at Jackson County

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 9) – Justin Kay’s third Deery Brothers Summer Series feature win of the season put him in a familiar place: Back on top of point standings for the IMCA Late Model tour. Kay passed Tyler Droste and pole starter Dan Shelliam for the lead midway through Tuesday’s 40-lap main event at Jackson County Speedway. Two late cautions kept lapped traffic from becoming an issue and Kay motored to the $3,000 victory, his tour career 12th. Shelliam gained second back from Droste following the final restart, with three laps left. The runner-up finish was his career best. Droste was third, Joe Zrostlik a career best in fourth and Jeff Aikey completed the top five. Hurst inches by Maitland for Jackson County Hawkeye Dirt Tour win

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (June 9) – The margin of Jeremiah Hurst’s career first Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature win was measured in inches. And not very many of them. Hurst caught Ryan Maitland coming out of the final turn Tuesday at Jackson County Speedway and won the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified main event by not much more than a bumper. The $1,000 victory landed him on the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Hurst had started ninth, ran second much of the way in a caution-free 25-lapper and went to a higher line to get around Maitland and get the win. Justin Kay raced from 16th starting to third in his HDT debut. Ben Chapman was fourth while defending series champion Mike Van Genderen moved atop the point standings with his fifth place showing. Both the Deery Brothers Summer Series for Late Models and the Hawkeye Dirt Tour for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds travel to Maquoketa on June 9. Deery drivers make their seventh start of the season. Their main event pays $3,000 to win and a minimum of $300 to start. The second installment of the Hawkeye Dirt Tour totes a $1,000 top prize, is a 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier and pays a minimum of $150 to start. Saturday show at Jackson next for North Star Touring Series

JACKSON, Minn. – Saturday’s IMCA’s North Star Tour show sees five IMCA divisions back in a familiar series setting. Jackson Speedway is site of the June 6 card featuring Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Mach-1 Sport Compacts. Rauen outruns Droste at Marshalltown for first Deery Series win

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (June 2) – Two drivers looking for career first Deery Brothers Summer Series feature wins squared off Tuesday night at Marshalltown Speedway and it was Jason Rauen going home with the trophy and a check for $3,500. Rauen reeled in Tyler Droste on the 42nd lap of the Miller Lite 50 tour event for IMCA Late Models, then pulled ahead to win by four car lengths.
