Caution opens door for Cordes in XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour at Indee

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (July 24) – The caution that Troy Cordes was hoping for finally came out with eight laps left in Thursday’s XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour main event at Independence Motor Speedway. Defending IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified series champion Ronn Lauritzen drew the outside pole start and clearly had the fastest ride through the first 22 circuits. Cordes had taken the opening green from 11th and worked his way steadily to second but was still well off the pace before the fateful yellow flew for a car stopped on the track. The two Independence regulars dueled up front before Cordes finally found his way to the front. The final caution, for a car perched on the backside of turn four, set up a green, white, checkered finish. Cordes pulled ahead to take the checkers a couple car lengths ahead of Lauritzen. He earned a spot on the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot along with his tour career first victory. Vern Jackson, Jeff Waterman and Adam Johnson completed the top five. Stanford wins round 3 of Wild West Modified Series

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (July 22) – Alex Stanford became the third different winner in as many nights when the Wild West Modified Speedweek resumed Tuesday at Cottage Grove Speedway. The $1,000 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified victory was his career third and put the California clipper on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Collen Winebarger was very fast on the initial start but every time he built a decent lead it was erased by caution. By lap 12, Winebarger was under considerable pressure from Stanford. Stanford made his pass for the lead on lap 12 but when Winebarger tried to get it back, the two got together. Winebarger sustained damage and came to a stop. From there on out, Stanford had no issues in front. Cautions came out when he caught up with lapped cars, eliminating that traffic. Stanford led the rest of the distance to score the victory, his first ever at Cottage Grove. Jesse Williamson, Jesse Bailey and Curtis Towns were next across the stripe. Winebarger raced [Read More]

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 19) – Brendon Gemmill picked off his second Dodge City Raceway Park triumph of the year by posting a $1,200 victory in Saturday night’s second annual IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified Stampede. Gemmill raced past his father Troy 13 rounds into the 30-lapper before holding off Eddie Belec over the closing circuits for his second consecutive DCRP score. “I really didn’t feel comfortable out there, it was the first time we’ve had this car out this year,” Gemmill commented from victory lane following the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier. “Sometimes the fastest car doesn’t win. This is one of those times.” Troy Gemmill gunned into the lead at the outset of the main event from his front row outside starting position with Brendon Gemmill chasing from the third starting position. Brendon moved in to challenge after eight laps before finally slipping underneath Troy for the lead entering turn one on the 13th lap. Carrell captures Wild West Speedweek Night 2 at Banks

By Ben Deatherage BANKS, Ore. (July 20) – His first Wild West Modified Speedweek paid $1,000 to Mark Carrell. Travis Peery had looked to make it two IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified tour wins in a row at Sunset Speedway Park. He started on the front row and was dominant for much of the race. In the first 15 laps, five cautions would take place resulting in Peery having to deal with an open race track. Peery set a rapid pace and as the lap count dwindled he showed no signs of slowing down. But he used up too much of his tires and briefly got out of shape on lap 27, allowing Carrell to make the pass for the lead. Carrell led the remaining distance for the win and accompanying 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot berth. Rounding out the top five were Peery, Jesse Williamson, Cory Sample and Alex Stanford. Twenty-eight entries from five states returned for the second of six Wild West Speedweek installments. Next up are Tuesday, July 22 and Wednesday, [Read More]

Charlie Ware is Dixieland Sprint Series winner

By Jim Haines ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (July 18) – Charlie Ware made the most of a fast ride and track that suited him by taking his first feature win in his own car in Friday’s Virginia Sprint Series feature at Dixieland Speedway. Chris Ware and Charlie Ware paced the IMCA Eagle Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car field to the green with Charlie out first bring Glenn Worrell along with him. Tony Harris was third, right on Worrell, as Charlie Ware stayed on the cushion staying smooth lap after lap. Halfway came and a car did a 360 degree spin, then drove up the track causing some bumps and blocking the track, which bunched up the field for a dash to the checkers. Charlie Ware took off with Worrell and Tony Harris right behind and Troy Severin and Jerald Harris filling the top five. With three to go Worrell went low to take a shot at the lead but he ended up doing a slow spin and gave the field one last try at the front runner. [Read More]

Abelson conquers Harris Clash IMCA Modifieds at Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 17) – Chris Abelson was plenty fast in winning his Thursday night “B” feature during the Harris Clash at Knoxville. He proved even faster in the evening’s IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event, racing from 17th starting to the lead on the 19th of 25 laps. Abelson pulled away in the final circuits to the $2,000 payday. The Clash was also an XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour event and the final race of IMCA’s Hawkeye State Modified Speedweek. Eighty drivers from 11 states and Canada contended. Brett Lowry was the $1,000 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod winner. That division drew 59 entries from six states. Eric Dailey drew the Modified pole but it was Canadian visitor Aaron Turnbull in the lead when the opening lap was scored. Cautions slowed the early going before a long green flag run that saw Mike Van Genderen race from mid-pack to second. Kurt Kile, Jeff Jodersma and the hard-charging Abelson were running close behind when the yellow came back out on lap 16. The opportunistic Abelson shot [Read More]
