Kay collects Friday Yankee Dirt Track Classic Deery checkers at Farley

FARLEY, Iowa (Sept. 2) – Right place, right time. Justin Kay inherited the lead after a flat tire sidelined race-long leader Spencer Diercks and led to the finish of Friday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at Farley Speedway. The IMCA Late Model tour victory paid $2,000 and was the 19th of Kay’s career. He’s now tied with Rob Toland for seventh on the all-time Deery Series wins list. Fifty Late Models were on hand for the first of two Deery shows during the Yankee Dirt Track Classic, the top car count of the 30th annual tour. Diercks drew the pole start and led the first 38 times around the 3/8’s mile oval while Kay made his way forward from 11th starting. Diercks, however, pulled up lame on restart and Kay took charge. He was chased across the stripe by Joel Callahan, who advanced 22 positions from his last-place starting spot on the initial grid. Completing the top five were Jeff Aikey, Jeremiah Hurst and Ryan Dolan. Tyler Bruening was sixth and takes a one [Read More]

Ryan gets best of Deery challengers at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Aug. 16) – If he’d had a rear view mirror, Matt Ryan would have been able to watch the race that played out behind him in Tuesday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at Dubuque Speedway. Ryan led all but the first of 50 laps in winning the IMCA Late Model tour feature and $2,400. The Deery checkers were his career second. “Normally when I go to Dubuque I’m a guardrail guy but the car was good on the top side in my heat race,” said Ryan, who’d won the Slocum Memorial Deery in April of 2011. “I thought if I’m starting second that I’d stay there. My goal was to stay on the cushion but keep it out of the fence.” He left the top side just long enough to pass pole starter Dan Shelliam, then stayed in front to the checkers. Point leader Tyler Bruening ended a couple car lengths off the pace in second to add a little more breathing room in his battle for the series championship with fifth-finishing [Read More]

Kay continues Deery Series dominance at Cedar County

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 2) – A quick call to the assessor’s office would reveal that Justin Kay does not own Cedar County Raceway. It just seems like he does. Kay won his third straight Deery Brothers Summer Series main event at the Tipton oval Tuesday night, leading the last 31 circuits in a fast-paced 50-lapper that ran caution-free. The $2,000 victory was his IMCA Late Model tour career 18th and second this season. “We’ve always run really well at Tipton. It’s probably one of the tracks I have the most laps on, too,” said Kay, who started racing there in his 4-cylinder days. “Everything about that track I love. It’s always slick and smooth.” “I ran the bottom and when I moved up to get around lapped cars it was good there, too,” he added. “I think I used about every inch of the track.” Cayden Carter was checking out on the rest of the field just six laps into the contest, but saw his big lead begin to evaporate after catching up with the back [Read More]

IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour checkers fly for Dripps’ first Tipton triumph

TIPTON, Iowa (Aug. 2) – Corey Dripps put another check on his bucket list by taking the $1,000 check at Tuesday’s Hawkeye Dirt Tour event at Cedar County Raceway. Dripps led all 30 laps of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature at Tipton, outrunning defending tour champion Kyle Brown for the midweek win at Tipton. “This is one of the few tracks in Iowa where I hadn’t won at. It’s good to get that off my bucket list, especially at a special like the Hawkeye Dirt Tour,” he said, also noting the victory was powered by a Ford motor. “In the 1990s I was leading and almost had a lot of races won here but it didn’t happen.” The front pair got a late break when coming onto traffic with three laps left. The first slower car they encountered pulled off and gave both plenty of track to determine the finish; Dripps got two lapped cars ahead of Brown before their 1-2 finish. Brown had his best finish of the 2016 series season while [Read More]

Aikey holds off Bruening, scores Deery Series win in Des Moines

By Ryan Clark DES MOINES, Iowa (July 29) – To say Jeff Aikey had to work for his Friday win at the Iowa State Fair Speedway would be an understatement. The current point leader in the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models rolled off from the pole but was pressured throughout most of the 40-lapper by Tyler Bruening. Aikey, also the 2016 track champion in Des Moines, led the field through a pair of early cautions on laps three and nine, the only two stoppages of the event. Bruening, who started outside of row three, took advantage of the lap nine restart and stole second from Matt Ryan before running down the race leader. The lead pair built a near straightaway lead over the field while they battled for the top spot. Bruening remained within a couple car lengths throughout the rest of the first half of the event and pulled alongside Aikey when they encountered slower traffic just shy of midway. Although Bruening drew even on numerous occasions, Aikey held him at [Read More]
