New tech inspection process for Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa – The long, pre-race tech inspection lines will be gone at the 32nd IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. They will be replaced by a system designed to keep the pit roads clear and minimize each driver’s time spent waiting in the tech line. Beginning Sunday, Aug. 31 through Wednesday, Sept. 1-3, drivers will be issued tech inspection sheets and inspection group cards on a first-come, first-served basis. After receiving their inspection sheets and cards, drivers will be called over the PA system to the lineup board for staging and then sent to the inspection area in groups. All cars must be inspected before competing and drivers are encouraged to go to the tech trailer and get their inspection sheets and cards as soon as they and their race cars arrive at the speedway. Limited inspections will be continued after racing begins and groups for that will be announced before racing starts. No cars will be inspected that do not have group cards. Drivers who miss their assigned inspection time will [Read More]

Format changes are few for Sept. 1-6 Super Nationals

BOONE, Iowa (Aug. 1) – Changes in the race night format during the upcoming IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s are few and far between. Super Nationals runs from Sept. 1-6 at Boone Speedway. Subject to car counts at the 32nd annual event, the number of heat races, “B” features and qualifying features are the same this year as in 2013 for the Modifieds, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. Car count numbers will determine the number of Northern SportMod “B” features. The number of entries also have more effect on the format for the Monday, Sept. 1 Deery Brothers Summer Series for Late Models and Tuesday, Sept. 2 Sport Compact programs. “The rumors circulating about wholesale changes to the Super Nationals qualifying format are completely false,” IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root said. “Considering all the logistics and sheer size of Super Nationals, there is no room for us to be inefficient or waste time.” “We will continue with a format that makes the most sense for the racers competing and the [Read More]

“Speedy” Bill Smith crosses the Finish Line

LINCOLN, Neb. – Victory Lane fell silent this weekend as the performance automotive community lost a pioneering racer, hot rodder and entrepreneur. “Speedy” Bill Smith, founder and owner of Speedway Motors, died May 30 at his home in Lincoln, Neb., just weeks before his 85th birthday. He is survived by four sons, their wives, ten grandchildren and an extended family of Speedway Motors employees and thousands of loyal customers. A Lincoln, Neb., native, Smith got hooked on cars early in life and began buying, fixing, and selling Model T’s for profit as a teen. Soon he was racing, first motorcycles, then cars, while attending classes at Nebraska Wesleyan University. After earning a degree in education, Smith followed his automotive passion and opened Speedway Motors in 1952, aided by a $300 loan from his wife Joyce. A combination of passion, tenacity and innovation allowed Smith to grow a small 20×20 storefront into a flourishing mail-order business and manufacturing empire.
