Stanford becomes first to repeat in Wild West Modified Speedweek

By Ben Deatherage LEBANON, Ore. (July 25) – When the checkers flew Friday at Willamette Speedway, Alex Stanford was the first repeat winner in the Wild West Modified Speedweek. Stanford chased down Jesse Williamson on the 33rd circuit for the $1,000 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified victory. He’d raced his way onto the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot with his July 22 Speedweek feature victory at Cottage Grove Speedway. Williamson had been fast out of the gate as he grabbed the lead on the initial start in and looked very dominant in the early goings. The entire field raced hard but clean, producing three- to four-wide action all over the track. It looked like the race would go caution free but a yellow came out on lap 26 due to debris. This caution bunched the field up just as the leaders were dealing with lapped traffic. Tech revelation puts Gaylord on right track for BST checkers

HOLYOKE, Colo. (July 21) – Ryan Gaylord’s journey to victory lane Monday night at Phillips County Raceway got its start two nights before in the tech area at Calhan. “I had been struggling and they found the left side wheelbase was way off at Calhan,” Gaylord explained after his $1,000 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature win in the Precise Racing Products BST show at Holyoke. “That was a blessing in disguise because it really helped us turn the car around.” Gaylord ran seventh at El Paso County Speedway and worked out some kinks with a mid-pack finish Sunday at Thomas County Speedway. Thomas County BST feature win goes to Hansen

COLBY, Kan. (July 20) – A rare visit to a favorite speedplant resulted in a second Precise Racing Products BST win in three nights for John Hansen. Hansen started ninth and was in the lead for good by the 10th circuit in the Sunday night IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified 25-lapper at Thomas County Speedway. The win paid $1,000. “We’ve won a few fair specials here the last couple years. Thomas County is definitely a favorite track, we just don’t get here enough,” Hansen said. “The track was really racy. There was plenty of room to race on the high side and that’s where a lot of the passing was done.” Up to third by lap eight, Hansen took charge after the ensuing restart. One more caution slowed action over the last half of the race as Hansen eased away to take the checkers ahead of Jeremy Frenier, Scott Drake, Saturday winner Ken Schrader and Eddie Belec. Hansen leads flag to flag in Lamar BST

LAMAR, Colo. (July 18) – John Hansen opened with a flag to flag run in the opener of a four-night Precise Racing BST Series trek. The Friday IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified checkers came at Lamar Speedway, paid $1,000 and put Hansen on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “We’ve been successful at Lamar before although this time wasn’t as peaceful,” Hansen said following a 25-lapper that saw its share of cautions. “Brady (Coen) pressured me the whole race and pulled alongside a couple times.” Coen, Jeremy Frenier, Eddie Belec and Ryan Gaylord rounded out the top five. Hansen had drawn the pole start and maintained the lead through multiple yellows from the preferred lower line. Once into lapped traffic, he went higher up on the oval to stay ahead of the pack. Stanford wins round 3 of Wild West Modified Series

By Ben Deatherage COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (July 22) – Alex Stanford became the third different winner in as many nights when the Wild West Modified Speedweek resumed Tuesday at Cottage Grove Speedway. The $1,000 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified victory was his career third and put the California clipper on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. Collen Winebarger was very fast on the initial start but every time he built a decent lead it was erased by caution. By lap 12, Winebarger was under considerable pressure from Stanford. Stanford made his pass for the lead on lap 12 but when Winebarger tried to get it back, the two got together. Winebarger sustained damage and came to a stop. From there on out, Stanford had no issues in front. Cautions came out when he caught up with lapped cars, eliminating that traffic. Modified Mayhem win at Billings pays off big for Hagen

BILLINGS. Mont. (July 19) – His first visit to Billings Motorsports Park produced a new career highlight for Travis Hagen. The North Dakota traveler led all 30 laps in winning the inaugural Modified Mayhem special. Saturday’s IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event at Billings paid $2,500 to win and landed Hagen on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. “It’s fun to race at different tracks and we had a lot of fun at Billings,” said Hagen, who hadn’t decided between the original Mayhem date and Estevan Motor Speedway before both shows were rained out on May 31. “They put on a great show and the people at the track were nice.” After drawing the outside row one start, Hagen ran most of the way with fellow traveler Eric Sinness. Lund gets back on track for Redline North Star Series win at Redwood

REDWOOD FALLS, Minn. (July 20) – Once he got back on track, Curt Lund got his first Redline Racing Parts North Star Series win of the season at Redwood Speedway. Lund started Sunday’s IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature from the pole and led all 20 laps despite driving off the second set of turns just before midway. He got back on the track as Dalton Magers and Brandon Beckendorf made up ground, then pulled away to the checkers. Beckendorf, Magers, Josh Rogotzke and Tyler Limoges completed the top five. The tour victory was Lund’s career third; he’d won two North Star events in 2012. Matt Speckman won his career second IMCA Sunoco Stock Car tour feature while Danny Myrvold and Jamie Songer were first-time winners in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks, respectively. Brendon Gemmill takes Modified Stampede by the horns

(July 19) – Brendon Gemmill picked off his second Dodge City Raceway Park triumph of the year by posting a $1,200 victory in Saturday night’s second annual IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified Stampede. Gemmill raced past his father Troy 13 rounds into the 30-lapper before holding off Eddie Belec over the closing circuits for his second consecutive DCRP score. “I really didn’t feel comfortable out there, it was the first time we’ve had this car out this year,” Gemmill commented from victory lane following the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier. “Sometimes the fastest car doesn’t win. Carrell captures Wild West Speedweek Night 2 at Banks

By Ben Deatherage BANKS, Ore. (July 20) – His first Wild West Modified Speedweek paid $1,000 to Mark Carrell. Travis Peery had looked to make it two IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified tour wins in a row at Sunset Speedway Park. He started on the front row and was dominant for much of the race. In the first 15 laps, five cautions would take place resulting in Peery having to deal with an open race track. Peery set a rapid pace and as the lap count dwindled he showed no signs of slowing down. But he used up too much of his tires and briefly got out of shape on lap 27, allowing Carrell to make the pass for the lead. Carrell led the remaining distance for the win and accompanying 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot berth. Peery paces Wild West Modified Speedweek opener

By Ben Deatherage BANKS, Ore. (July 19) – A $1,000 check accompanied opening night honors for Travis Peery, winner of Saturday’s Wild West Modified Speedweek event at Sunset Speedway Park. Thirty IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified entries were on hand from Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, and North Dakota for the first round of the fourth annual tour. Leading the entire distance of the 40-lap Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying feature was Peery, coming all the way from North Dakota, but originally from California. Collen Winebarger put his machine in the runner-up position while “B” winner Alex Stanford was third. Braedon Hand was fourth and defending Speedweek champion Jesse Williamson was fifth.
