Van Genderen takes Desert Classic title

By Lonnie Wheatley PEORIA, Ariz. (Nov. 1-2) – After making his first visit to Canyon Speedway Park, Mike Van Genderen is probably already looking forward to his second. Van Genderen made the most of the 1,500 mile trek from Newton, Iowa, by taking the $5,000 winner’s share in Saturday night’s 40-lap IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event that put the wraps on Canyon’s 25th annual Desert Classic special. The payday was Van Genderen’s biggest in the open-wheeled division and put him on the ballot for the 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. He raced from his front row outside starting position and led every circuit before taking the checkered flag. Cautions slowed the early going but the last half of the feature stayed green. Van Genderen used the top line and led by a straightaway much of the distance before getting slowed by heavy lapped traffic in the late going. Cotton Bowl sanctions four IMCA divisions in 2014

PAIGE, Texas – Cotton Bowl Speedway at Paige will sanction IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks beginning in 2014. The 3/8-mile semi-banked clay oval is approximately 30 miles east of Austin on Highway 290. The Saturday night venue opened this year and has a seating capacity of 5,000. “We’re already excited about next season and sanctioning our Modifieds and SportMods with IMCA,” promoter Danny Bennett said. “We had a good weekly car count this year around 20 Modifieds and 18-21 SportMods. Hopefully we can have the same type of results with the sanctioned Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks as new classes for Cotton Bowl in 2014.” An opening night date and special event dates for 2014 are to be announced. Wilmot takes point lead to 5MP in finale for IMCA World Products Empire State Series

KIRKWOOD, N.Y. (Oct. 30) – Mike Wilmot left Five Mile Point Speedway with the win on opening night of the World Products Empire State Series back in April. This Saturday night, he has the chance to go home to Windsor as champion of the 12th annual tour for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds. Wilmot brings a 13 point advantage over Chris Fleming into the Nov. 2 series finale, during the National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend. The IMCA feature pays $600 to win and a minimum of $100 to start. Grandstand admission is $20 and pit passes are $35. Duel In The Desert pre-entries now at 230

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Oct. 31) – Pre-entries for the Duel In The Desert special at Las Vegas Motor Speedway continue to run ahead of last year’s pace, with 230 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified and IMCA SportMod drivers on the roster for the Nov. 6-9 special. Early entries are in hand from 185 Modified drivers from 19 states and three Canadian provinces. SportMod entries number 45 and were postmarked from a dozen states and two provinces. Modifieds race for $7,777 to win and a minimum of $777 to start their Saturday, Nov. 9 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier. CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (Oct. 29) – IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds will run for a top prize of $5,000 at Central Arizona Raceway’s inaugural Cactus Classic special Friday-Sunday, Nov. 22-24. The top five cars from Friday and Saturday qualifying features advance to Sunday’s main event. Last-chance qualifying on Sunday fills out the grid for the 24-car headliner. Sunday’s show is a 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier and pays a minimum of $400 to start. There is no entry fee. Tow money for non-qualifiers who race all three days is $100. Cash, license awarded in Duel Best Appearing Car contest

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified driver winning XSAN Best Appearing Car presented by Wells Design voting during the Duel In The Desert won’t have to go to the casino to hit it big. Voting will be conducted during the Nov. 6-9 Duel via the XSAN Facebook page. XSAN, which will televise the 16th annual event at the half-mile Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, will pay the top vote getter $500. Second place will be good for $300 and third place $200. Allen proves up to Challenge at Abilene

Allen won Saturday’s IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event at Abilene Speedway’s Ryan Bard Memorial Southern Challenge. He took off from the pole, was fast right out of the gate and earned $3,000, plus a spot on the ballot for the 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. National champion William Gould started outside the front row and looked to have one of the cars that might have something for Allen. Before halfway, the front pair had pulled away from the rest of the field by a straightway. DUNDEE, N.Y. – Round six of the World Products Empire State Series takes IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds to Black Rock Speedway this Saturday, Oct. 26. The Dutch Hoag National Open feature pays $500 to win and a minimum of $100 to start. Grandstand admission is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, $5 for students ages 6-16 and free for five and under. Final four rookie winners get Speedway Motors gift cards

LINCOLN, Neb. – The final four IMCA rookies winning career-first features during the 2013 point season have received $100 gift cards from Speedway Motors. Tom Quint won the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main event at I-76 Speedway on Sept. 21. First-time Mach-1 Sport Compact winners were Taylor Kuper, at Hancock County Speedway on June 7; Kyren Porter, at Arlington Raceway on Sept. 21; and Richard Sides, at Summit Raceway on Sept. 27. In all, 87 rookie drivers received gift cards from Speedway Motors this season.
