Wroten makes history at CJ Speedway

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (June 24, 2022) – Friday night, history was made at the CJ Speedway as victory lane welcomed the first female driver in recent history. It happened in the very tough IMCA Sunoco Stock Car division. Leah Wroten made her third consecutive trip to CJ Speedway and started the main event in the second row. Wroten took the lead on lap five from Kenny O’Donnell and went on to make history by winning the main event in convincing fashion. A late-race caution bunched the field up but Wroten held her line and sailed on to the win ahead of Tom Cannon and O’Donnell. When asked if he could remember the last time a woman made her way to victory lane, promoter Larry Richardson was stumped and could not remember when or if it had happened. Brown gets Modified win, Spaw stays hot at CJ Speedway

by Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (June 17) – Jarrett Brown scored the feature win in the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds Friday night at CJ Speedway. Brown chased down race leader Kurt Kile making the pass at the midway point of the feature and went to score the win ahead of Matt Werner and Kile.  Johnny Spaw has made three visits to CJ Speedway in 2022 and has scored the win every time he has raced in the very tough IMCA Sunoco Stock Car class. Spaw took the lead early from Kenny O’Donnell and went on to score an impressive win ahead of Matt Picray, who advanced from the third row and scored his best finish of the season. The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods saw 24 drivers take the initial green flag. The main event belonged to Logan Anderson who started up front due to the redraw lineup. Veloz scores first win, Spaw and Kile repeat at CJ Speedway

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (June 10, 2022) –  The weather cleared Friday afternoon providing a beautiful night for racing at CJ Speedway. Mother Nature provided just the right amount of water on the 4/10 mile dirt track making for a very smooth, fast race track that evening.  The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods were the final race of the night and a strong field of 24 drivers took the initial green flag. Carter VanDenBerg took the green from the pole position and led the main event for 14 and ¾-lap but the checkers had not waved when a caution flew for the second place driver spinning in front of the field.  The field was reset for a green, white, checkered dash to the finish. VanDenBerg was holding off all challengers until the final lap when recent high school graduate Logan Veloz provided a thrilling finish. Janssen, Foster score first-time wins at CJ

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 27, 2022) – Racing went on at the CJ Speedway on Friday despite recent rains making for challenging conditions on the wet Louisa County Fairgrounds. The track was a bit tricky but proved to be very racy for all 73 competitors that signed in.   Drew Janssen made his first local appearance of the 2022 season and came away with the 16-lap Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature win. Jonathan Huston battled Barry Dugan for the lead in the early going before Huston was able to take over the point. Huston’s lead was short lived as the third starting Janssen took over the point and went on to hold off a hard-charging Maguire DeJong at the finish. Last week’s winner Jarrett Brown came under the checkers in third.  The Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod feature proved to be wild affair as several drivers held the point. Brown repeats, Spaw returns to CJ Speedway victory lane

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 20, 2022) – Friday night racing was held at CJ Speedway with a large increase in car count and an action packed night of close racing on the slick and smooth 4/10-mile dirt track on the Louisa County Fairgrounds. The Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature saw Jarrett Brown make his way to victory lane for the second consecutive week. Brown steadily worked to the front from a fifth row start and made the winning pass on lap 12 of the 16-lap feature. Brown slipped by race leader Dakota Simmons by using multiple lines on the very racy track. Simmons took second at the checkers ahead of early leader Jonathan Huston. Johnny Spaw has been so busy building race cars that his racing schedule has been very limited. Brown, Anderson among winners at CJ Speedway

By Jerry Mackey  COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 13, 2022) – Beautiful weather conditions greeted fans and drivers for the second night of racing at the CJ Speedway on Friday night. A swift racing program was run with the final checkered flag waving at 9:30 p.m.   Jarrett Brown had his Bill Falyer-owned Modified dialed in and scored the Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature win. Brown stated in victory lane “We have had terrible luck so far this season with having lost two engines in the first three races that we have entered.” Brown found the right combination on Friday night and scored a convincing feature win over last week’s feature winner Troy Cordes. Maguire DeJong, in his rookie Modified campaign, ran a very strong third.   Dustin Vis has served notice to the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car drivers at the CJ Speedway that they are going to have to beat a very strong 20V car if they are going to get to victory lane. CJ Speedway opens with large field of racers

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (May 6, 2022) – After three consecutive rain outs the 2022 IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Race season finally got underway at CJ Speedway on the Louisa County Fairgrounds. A large field of drivers took part in the season opener.  The final checkered flag of the night flew when the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds completed their main event with Dunkerton, Iowa ace Troy Cordes, making the two hour drive to Columbus Junction pay off by recording the win.  Cordes started in the seventh position and steadily worked his way to the front, taking over the top spot from Jarrett Brown. Cordes led half of the 16 laps and took the checkers ahead of a fast-closing Maguire DeJong, who had started in the sixth row. Brown held on to finish third ahead of Kyle Montgomery.   The IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars never fail to delight the fans with great racing and the opening night feature was certainly no exception. Louisa County Fair Races see Murty, Brown score wins

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION Iowa (July 30) – With the 129th Louisa County Fair providing the backdrop, CJ Speedway thrilled fairgoers with an action-packed night of racing.   The IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars saw a great field of drivers take the green and the father and son team of Damon and Dallon Murty always provide strong competition for the locals when they pull into the track.  David Brandies took control of the feature in the early going before the elder Murty, Damon was able to catch Brandies and take over the top spot. Following a restart, fourth row starter Dallon Murty was able to catch his father and race side by side for a few laps before taking over the lead. The younger Murty went on to capture the $1,000 win over Brandies and Damon Murty.  The IMCA Modifieds were also running for a greatly enhanced purse thanks to several local sponsors. See, Kile top winners at CJ Speedway

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (July 23) – After two weeks of no racing due to the heavy rains in the Columbus Junction area the CJ Speedway returned to racing action on Friday night.  The night featured Bike night for the kids which saw well over 40 kids leave the track with new bikes or scooters thanks to a long list of donors to the CJ Kids Fan Club.  The racing action was highlighted by the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars. Scott Jordan led before eighth starting Jason See was able to take the point position. See was challenged late by David Brandies, who had started 10th. The two raced several laps with See holding off he constant challenges of Brandies. The final lap saw Brett Lowry shoot by Brandies for second as See took the win. A post-race incident saw Brandies DQ’d and relegated to the final position on the lead lap. Tad Payne was scored third ahead of Pat Rachels.  The IMCA Modified feature win went to Kurt Kile. Out of the field, Strothman wins on the track at CJ

By Jerry Mackey COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (June 18) – On a warm sultry night, racing action went on at the CJ Speedway with a quick racing program being run just before rains moved in at the Louisa County Fairgrounds. The headliner of the night was the 20-lap IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature and on Friday night it belonged to Corey Strothman.  The C4 of Strothman started on the front row and was never seriously challenged as he raced to the win. The action behind Strothman was hot and heavy as several drivers took their turns racing in the second position. When the checkers flew it was Adam Bell crossing under the checkers in second ahead of Kirk Kinsley and Shane Richardson. Strothman stated in victory lane, “We are finally caught up on the farm so it is now time to start racing.”  Brandon Banks chased down early leader Kyle Madden and took the lead in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature and went on to score his second feature win in a row at CJ Speedway.
