Dodge City checkers fly again for Sproul

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. (Aug. 8) – Dakota Sproul made it two in a row in the IMCA Modified ranks Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park. Sproul held off New Mexico’s Cory Davis after a late caution flag to post his third DCRP win of the season. After starting sixth, Sproul spent the early going working towards the front as Kevin Gray set the pace. Sproul made it to second by the fourth lap and then slipped underneath Gray in turns one and two on the sixth round to take command. With Sproul setting sail, Davis made his way forward from the ninth position to take over second at the midway point. And when a caution flew with just six laps to go that nixed Sproul’s advantage, Davis was there to mount a charge. Davis pulled alongside exiting turn four with three laps to go, but Sproul countered and slipped away to secure the victory. Dodge City Raceway Park is back in action Saturday night

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – Dodge City Raceway Park’s Lubbock Wrecker Service DCRP Sprint Car Nationals is little more than two weeks away. Following an idle weekend at the 3/8-mile clay oval, this Saturday’s tilt will be the final opportunity to get dialed in for the Hambelton Racing DCRP Sprint Cars before the Nationals that take place on Aug. 20-22 as the Sprint Cars have next Saturday, August 15 off in order to finalize preparations for the mega-event. Along with the Sprint Cars, this Saturday’s card includes a full slate of championship chase action including IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. Racing action gets under way at 7:30 p.m.

Wahrman hoists Hobby hardware at Dodge City

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 24) – Duane Wahrman became the fourth different IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock winners in as many events this season Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park. Wahrman took command on the sixth of 15 rounds and slipped away from the field until Tathan Burkhart raced into second at midway. Burkhart chipped away at the lead but ran out of laps to catch Wahrman. Burkhart was second with Skeets Salazar in third. In the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature, Dakota Sproul put on a clinic as he posted his second win of the year. Gunning into the lead at the outset, Sproul ripped the top side of the track and checked out on the field as Clay Sellard and Brendon Gemmill worked into second and third. Back-to-Front Challenge returns to Dodge City on Friday night

By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Back-to-Front Challenge is back at this Friday night’s Dodge City Raceway Park Driver & Fan Appreciation Night. And a lucky fan could walk away from the night’s races with an extra $10,000. The always popular Driver & Fan Appreciation Night continues July 24 at the 3/8-mile clay oval in Southwest Kansas with fans admitted for $5 with a ticket from a driver. Otherwise, general admission is $12. Drivers and fans alike will be treated to all variety of giveaways throughout the night of racing that includes the Hambelton Racing DCRP Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. To cap the evening off, if a selected driver can race from the 20th starting position in his feature event to take the win then a lucky fan holding the winning ticket can win $10,000. Doing double duty at Dodge City, Kaup captures Stock Car Shootout

However, on Saturday night, the Woodward, Okla., racer did it for the first time in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car Ranks by taking the $1,000 winner’s share in a hard-fought Stock Car Shootout presented by Winner’s Circle Feedyards and Factory Direct Fireworks atop the 3/8-mile DCRP clay oval. Kaup has accumulated 20 feature wins while earning six IMCA SportMod championships over the past seven years at Dodge City. This year, Kaup is pulling double-duty in both the SportMods and Stock Cars. And with the big money on the line Saturday evening, Kaup emerged from a wild battle to ultimately take the win in the 25-lapper. With several contenders running afoul of misfortune throughout the first half of the race, it ultimately boiled down to a three-way battle between Chris Oliver, Shaylon Holloway and Kaup. By Lonnie Wheatley DODGE CITY, Kan. – Dodge City Raceway Park fires back to action this weekend with the $1,000-to-win IMCA Sunoco Stock Car Shootout presented by Winner’s Circle Feedyards and Factory Direct Fireworks on Saturday night atop the 3/8-mile clay oval in southwest Kansas. Last year’s special event for the Stock Cars evolved into a true “Shootout” with Hill City’s Kyle Pfeifer battling past Jason Rogers in the closing rounds to secure the win. Saturday’s racing action gets under way at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets for are $12 for adults while children 11 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes are $30. Taking shape in a wide variety of special award sponsors and lap sponsors, the event is set for Aug. 20-22 atop the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park clay oval. The three-day tilt pitting the Hambelton Racing DCRP versus the United Rebel Sprint Series with a number of other invaders from throughout gets under way with two full nights of heat races and features on Thursday and Friday that will set the stage for Saturday’s $3,000-to-win, $400-to-start 30-lap finale. Becker starts holiday weekend with Sprint win at Dodge City

(July 2) – The Independence Weekend got off to an early start at Dodge City Raceway Park with Brett Becker picking up the $1,000 winner’s share in the Mel Hambelton Ford Racing POWRi United Rebel Sprint Series vs. DCRP Sprint Car Clash. Becker gridded the feature outside the front row but it was 16-year-old pole starter Kyler Johnson gunning into the initial lead of the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car main event. Fourth starting Jake Bubak handled Becker on lap two to move into the runner-up spot. By lap five Becker found the bottom to his liking, moving back by Bubak and taking the lead one lap later from Johnson. Working through traffic much of the way, Becker fought off a bid from Bubak at the midway point and then had Johnson on his tailtank again after a Bubak miscue on the 16th lap. And it all goes down Thursday night atop the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park clay oval in southwest Kansas when the top Sprint Car drivers throughout the region face off to vie for a boosted winner’s share of $1,000. Thursday’s tilt pits the Hambelton Racing DCRP Sprint Cars versus the United Rebel Sprint Series. It is also a full night of championship chase action for the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks. In total, the Sprint Car Clash purse has been boosted by $1,000. While the winner receives $1,000, the runner-up will pocket $700 with start money at $125. Burkhart rallies for Roundup win at Dodge City

(June 20) – The lights shone upon the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park clay oval on Saturday night for the first time in 2020 with Hays racer Tathan Burkhart cashing in by winning the 25-lap IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock Roundup. Rebounding from heat races issues, Burkhart rallied through the field from 15th and took command at the midway point en route to topping the Roundup after scoring six IMCA Hobby Stock wins at Dodge City last year. A multi-car battle for the point ensued in the early rounds before a multi-car tangle on lap eight eliminated much of the field. The battle continued on after the restart with Burkhart ultimately taking command on the 12th circuit and leading the rest of the way to the checkered flag ahead of Garrett Hager, Braxton Berry, Cody Williams and Duane Wahrman.
